Forgiven Films, a Division of GVN Releasing, Acquires Its First Film, The Latin Dance-Themed Drama SHINE
Set to the Soundtracks of Salsa’s Golden Era and Today’s hottest Urban Latino Acts, Anthony Nardolillo’s directorial debut was Kickstarter’s highest-funded Latino narrative film

Forgiven Films, the newly-launched division of GVN Releasing, has acquired the North American rights to Anthony Nardolillo’s “SHINE,” which he directed and independently produced via 13 Paces with producer Sandra Varona and in partnership with Sugar Studios LA and The Exchange.

The drama, starring David Zayas (“Dexter,” “Blue Bloods”), Alysia Reiner (“OITNB”) and world-renowned dancers Gilbert Saldivar (Mexican-American actor and choreographer Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Madonna) and Jorge “Ataca” Burgos (internationally acclaimed Bachata instructor making his acting debut), will open in theaters nationwide in the third quarter of 2018.

“SHINE” is the story of two brothers, once celebrated Salsa dancers, who are reunited years after the death of their father, on opposing ends of a city in full bloom gentrification.

Set in New York City with a cast that includes a legion of renowned Latin and Pop music dancers, the film reminds audiences about the power of community.

“’SHINE’ is a timely narrative framed by Latin entertainment at its best,” Geno Taylor at GVN Releasing said. “Its multi-platform marketability is the result of a passionate team of creators with a culturally unifying message and we are proud to bring the film to audiences.”

Forgiven Films will look to expand upon GVN’s distribution model to focus on wide market appeal movies with unique voices for underserved audiences, while GVN will continue to release faith-based and family titles.

Steven Belmont, President of Forgiven Films, said, “SHINE is a passionate, vibrant and very timely film. It is the perfect film to launch Forgiven Films, where we will aim to share unique voices and stories and provide quality entertainment to underserved audiences.”

Filmmaker Anthony Nardolillo said, “’SHINE’ is not just a dance film. It speaks to our times both culturally and politically. Forgiven Films and GVN have given us the platform to bring our movie to an audience anxious to see themselves and their lives portrayed on screen, thus opening the doors to future projects for 13 Paces and other U.S. Latino filmmakers. Latin dancing continues to build in popularity each year and is currently featured on several top-rated television shows. The message of taking pride in one’s community and heritage couldn’t be more urgent and timely. ‘SHINE’ fuses these elements with a fire and excitement set to a dynamic soundtrack of Latin music all-stars combined with a powerful storyline. This film is told in our own voice, with a raw, multi-talented, and diverse cast of performers that Hollywood films have not shared enough of, until now.”

“In 2017 Latin music and dance globally dominated record sales, streams and headlines in unprecedented numbers. There is no better time than now for a film like this,”Brian O’Shea, of The Exchange, said. “We are excited to be working with Forgiven Films on their first feature. Their passion is palpable and the theatrical commitment the US release can have a very positive effect on SHINE’s international value.”

The deal was negotiated by Steven Belmont for GVN Releasing/Forgiven Films and Brian O’Shea from The Exchange on behalf of the filmmakers.

Set in a Puerto Rican neighborhood of New York City, where most of the actors hail from, SHINE debuted on the festival circuit two days after Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico and a few weeks after Hurricane Harvey ravaged Houston, the hometown of Mexican-American co-star, Gilbert Saldivar.

The film was crowned with the Audience Award for “Best Feature” at the HBO-sponsored and Ava DuVernay-supported 2017 Urbanworld Film Festival in September and the screening sold out in 48 hours, which was the fastest in festival history.

In October 2017, a private Beverly Hills benefit screening of “SHINE” was held in support of the cast and longtime friend and tour dancer Gilbert Saldivar who was raising funds for hurricane relief efforts with the non-profit organization Voices for Puerto Rico.
Other celebrities such as Christina Aguilera were also in attendance to support the cause.Passionate and vibrant, “SHINE” transmits the pulse of the barrio with scores from the golden era of Salsa, by way of a partnership with Fania Records and hits by Sony Music Latin titans Marc Anthony and Romeo Santos, to New York hip-hop flavor by the late GRAMMY Award- winning Puerto Rican rapper, Big Pun and rap-producer duo, The Beat Nuts.

Movie Review by Kristin: GIFTED | #GiftedMovie

Hello, movie lovers!!

I’ve been wanting to see GIFTED for so long, and I finally got to watch it last night! I absolutely loved it! The cast was phenomenal and Mckenna Grace is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

SYNOPSIS: Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the 7-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary.

To be quite honest, this didn’t even feel like a movie. This felt like I was a spirit observing a beautiful relationship between an uncle and his niece. The acting didn’t feel forced at all and Mckenna’s performance didn’t just tug at my heart strings . . . she obliterated them. The on-screen chemistry between her and Chris Evans was so incredibly heartwarming. Even her relationship with their neighbor, Roberta (Octavia Spencer), was  a thing of beauty.

This film touched me on a personal level because of the relationship I have with my own niece. Sometimes you put your own life on hold to help raise someone else and I felt Frank’s struggle entirely in that respect. You want to do right by them and make sure they have the best life possible, but everyone makes mistakes. It’s how you bounce back from those mistakes that makes all the difference.

What Mckenna does as Mary is what blows you away as a viewer. She is a math prodigy who struggles to balance being a genius and being a kid. Frank, Roberta and the one-eyed cat Fred, help to keep Mary on a track that finds that balance successfully.

I caught the film on HBO, but this is one that I would definitely recommend actually buying. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s beautiful, it’s tragic and it’s absolutely underestimated. It’s a wonderful indie film that I highly recommend!

Movie Review by Kristin: LOVE, SIMON | #LoveSimon

Hey there, movie lovers!

I had the chance to catch a special screening of LOVE, SIMON last night with the niece and we absolutely loved it! We’d been looking forward to this movie since the trailer was first released and it definitely did not disappoint.

SYNOPSIS: Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.

To start off, the cast in LOVE, SIMON was absolutely phenomenal. It was diverse, it was incredibly talented and every single person made you feel connected to their character in some way. You’re able to place yourself in each character’s shoes to try and imagine what they might have been feeling in that moment and how you would react, in your own life, to certain situations that presented themselves throughout the movie.

Nick Robinson (Everything, Everything) shines as Simon Spier. You can actually feel his anxiety about coming out to his friends and family and being so desperate to do it on his own terms. For those in the LGBTQ community, their coming out story is such a powerful moment in their life and having that moment forced upon them the way it was forced upon Simon in the movie was heartbreaking. As someone who is straight, but very much connected to members of the LGBTQ community, these moments in LOVE, SIMON actually made me cry a bit. Yes, I admit it. My niece and I were wiping away tears that never stopped flowing. It was sad, it was uplifting, it was triumphant, it was lovely and it was inspiring all rolled into one hour and 50 minutes.

I would love to read the novel “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli to see if we get a bit more of a backstory for Simon. When the movie begins, we’re thrust into his present day struggle with being gay and no one having a clue. We get a quick little glimpse of when he sort of realized when he was gay, but I would’ve liked to see that explained just a little more. Its absence doesn’t take away from the film at all though.

Both my niece and I highly recommend seeing LOVE, SIMON. It’s such an important message for those struggling with their own sexuality, for parents who are oblivious to how their children might be feeling, for friends to learn how to be accepting and supportive towards each other, for classmates to see how bullying and social media could really affect a person’s life. It touches on so many important topics for young adults. Some of the characters are flawed in their own way–some more than others–and that really contributes to the realistic feel to the entire movie.

It will make you laugh, cry and cheer for these characters and it will most definitely make you LOVE SIMON!

You can catch LOVE, SIMON in theaters March 16, 2018!

THE GRINCH | New Trailer | In Theaters November 9

For their eighth fully animated feature, Illumination and Universal Pictures present The Grinch, based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday classic.

The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.

[UNSET][1]Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Who-ville when he runs out of food.

Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.

Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, Cindy-Lou Who—a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer—plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother. As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheme threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one. Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus? Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all?

Find out, Christmas season 2018.

Movie Review by Kristin: WONDER | #ChooseKind

What’s up, movie lovers?

I finally got to watch WONDER and I have to say . . . I loved it! It’s perfect for the family, and it’s perfect to watch on your own. Doesn’t really matter how you watch it as long as you watch it!

SYNOPSIS: Based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

The cast in WONDER was absolutely fantastic. Isabel (Julia Roberts), Nate (Owen Wilson) and Via (Izabela Vidovic) are a great support system to little Auggie (Jacob Tremblay) and their individual performances are amazing as well. Of course, the one who stands out the most is Auggie.

Jacob Tremblay had to undergo lots of prosthetic work to portray the character, who was born with Treacher Collins syndrome, and he does such a great job throughout the entire film. For such a young actor, he really embodied this role in every aspect.

Aside from Auggie, one of my favorite characters in WONDER was Jack Will (Noah Jupe). Jack’s character was apprehensive about Auggie at first, but once he got to know him, he realized how much he actually liked him. It think the dynamic between Jack Will and Auggie is one of the main “lessons” taught here. He was apprehensive, became friends with Auggie, went along with what the bullies were saying when Auggie wasn’t around, and then he was hurt when Auggie stopped speaking to him. It was a realistic portrayal of how kids behave at that age. Once Jack was able to see how good of a person Auggie was as opposed to the other kids, he was able to fully embrace his friend and make others do the same.

The entire movie was funny, adorable, heartwarming and realistic. Definitely a great movie to watch with your kids and a real conversation starter about how to treat others. My favorite quote from the movie comes from Auggie’s sister, Via:

“If they stare, let them stare. You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.”

Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon Light It Up in HBO Official Teaser Trailer for ‘FAHRENHEIT 451’

What’s up, movie lovers??

I must say, after watching this teaser trailer earlier today . . . I’m intrigued. I’m also a little salty that they’re BURNING BOOKS. What a waste!

FAHRENHEIT 451 is a film set for release this May on HBO. The film is also based on the 1953 dystopian novel (ironically) of the same name, written by Ray Bradbury.

Michael Shannon and Michael B. Jordan

SYNOPSIS: In a terrifying care-free future, a young man, Guy Montag, whose job as a fireman is to burn all books, questions his actions after meeting a young girl…and begins to rebel against society.

I love that Michael B. Jordan seems to be everywhere these days. What a phenomenal actor! So glad he’s getting the recognition he deserves. Hot on the heels of the successful Black Panther release in theaters, I’m excited to catch this in the next few months.

What did you think of the teaser? Did you read the novel? Let me know!
