Movie Review by Kristin: BAYWATCH | #BeBaywatch #Baywatch

IMG_8624

What’s up, beaches??? Sorry, I just had to…

I got to see a screening of BAYWATCH last night here in Miami and, I have to admit, it was a bit better than I expected!

Now, I used to watch the BAYWATCH TV show back in the 90s, so my initial thought was Oh no, this is most definitely going to flop; It’s going to have cheesy moments of reflection that will kill the funny, etc. I can’t sit here and say that it was the best movie I’ve seen in years, but comedy-wise it ranks pretty high on my list.

SYNOPSIS: Devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchanan butts heads with a brash new recruit. Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.

Zac Efron and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have amazing comedic chemistry throughout the entire film. Every scene they were in together had me laughing hysterically. Especially because Mitch (Dwayne Johnson) refused to say Brody’s (Zac Efron) name and, instead, opted for any boyband name he could think of.

The storyline was mildly interesting. The “team” takes matters into their own hands when Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra) threatens their bay by selling drugs and ruthlessly killing whoever gets in her way. Honestly, I probably could’ve done without the dragged out dramatic storyline, but it did tie in with what the team was trying to accomplish, so I guess it worked in that respect.

I know many people are trying to find out if this movie is acceptable for the little ones to watch. My 12-year-old niece came with me and it wasn’t all that bad BUT there are a ton of dirty conversations, an incident with someone’s junk getting stuck between two wooden slats from a beach chair, and a moment where a dead man’s penis is definitely front and center. The scenes are definitely funny, but if you don’t want your child seeing a penis on-screen, definitely be on alert during the scene at the morgue. You’re welcome!

Overall, I thought it was a decent movie. Like I said, not my favorite movie of all time, but I think it’s definitely worth a viewing. Try to remember that they’re sort of spoofing the TV show, so a few of the action scenes are a bit far-fetched, but the chemistry between the cast and the comedic timing of everyone involved is what makes this movie worth seeing.

You can catch BAYWATCH in theaters May 25!

Movie Review by Kristin: EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING | #everythingeverything

Ok, let me first say that this trailer captured my attention immediately when it was released. Not just because my niece has had a crush on Nick Robinson since Jurassic World either. It was because I actually felt the chemistry between Nick Robinson and Amandla Stenberg in a trailer that was less than three minutes long.

With that being said, I went into the screening for this movie having NOT read the book, so I have nothing to compare it to, but now I definitely want to read it!

I thought the film was GREAT! I had a preconceived notion that it would be the typical young, teen angst/love story where you end up sobbing into a box of tissues because you can most definitely predict the outcome.

Spoiler alert: I was wrong. For the most part anyway.

The movie follows a young girl, Maddy, who has just turned 18 and has never left her house due to an illness called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). Basically her immune system sucks and can’t fight off even the most mild of infections or allergies. Her life is turned upside down when a cutie pie, Olly, moves in next door and has his eyes set on her from the beginning. He awakens her need to know what it’s like to truly live outside the confines of her home.

The casting for this movie was fantastic. Nick Robinson and Amandla Stenberg had great chemistry. When their characters felt awkward, it was obvious. When they developed feelings for each other, you could feel it. When worry and confusion set in, you felt that too. There were funny moments combined with sad moments, mixed with a little worry and anxiety about whether Maddy (Amandla Stenberg) would live or die, and it all marinated into a beautiful story about falling in love and truly living your life.

Sure, there could have been a bit more character development that I’m sure was missing from the book to film adaptation, but I still thought it was a solid movie that I would most definitely see again. Perhaps an extra 30 minutes might have done the trick. Even so, my brother, who is a 37-year-old man that literally hates chick flicks even said it was a very good movie. I’m looking at all you guys that think it’s uncool to watch movies like this hahaha. I promise you, it’s okay!

If it’s any consolation to you book lovers out there, my niece’s friend saw the movie with me and she’d read the book. She said they stuck to the book for the most part. I can not confirm nor deny that personally, but I will definitely check the book out now to fill in any blanks I might have had while watching the movie (and there weren’t many).

So go out with your friends and family to check out Everything, Everything in theaters May 19! You won’t regret it!

You should also check out the novel of the same title by Nicola Yoon (like I’m going to do)!

Have you seen it yet? When you do, let me know what you thought!

@Thisfunktional Movie Review: LOWRIDERS

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

A story fitting an east Los Angeles Culture that has been around for many years, “Lowriders” has an iconic look and style fitting of east LA.

Although the music is modernized, there is no classic oldies which the car clubs enjoy showcasing their cars to in this story of a new generation of Hispanics keeping tradition alive.

Danny, played by Gabriel Chavarria, is a great example of the new generation of Hispanics. The culture isn’t lost to him, just the emphasis of his drive goes a different direction.

Chavarria is great as the confused kid thinking he knows everything and has everything figured out. His drive and evolution capture the audience’s attention and gives a voice to young Hispanics like his character.

Ghost, played by Theo Rossi, is impactful throughout. The character is a catalyst for change and understanding while being also troubled.

Rossi is brilliant and fits this character fantastic. The persistent nature of his character is captured, the complex rivalry is made prominent through mannerisms as well as the tone of voice used, even more when facial expressions and body language express the discomfort or anger as much as the delivery of the strong words.

The patria of the family Miguel, played by Damian Bichir, is a strong stubborn Hispanic father. His cold, scared to show emotion character was powerful.

Bichir seems like he is picked from the streets of east Los Angeles. His quiet, cold and stubborn portrayal of this character speaks to the social being of typical fathers who look to conceal emotion to show strength.

These three characters drive the movie and the cars they showcase are extraordinary while also being fitting of the peacocking they do to grab each other’s attention, yet still are confused as to why there’s such a division between family.

Danny’s girlfriend Lorelai, played by Melissa Benoist, helps to show Danny how he keeps himself from accepting all that he is.

Benoist isn’t always such a strong character in past projects, but she is able to be the passionate guardian character beautifully. Her strength is shown and she helps to bring out the complexity on Chavarria’s character. It’s a brilliant performance.

Miguel’s wife Gloria, played by Eva Longoria, serves as a rock to Miguel. The character isn’t on screen much, but the moral compass she is to this family helps to bring out even more out of these characters.

Longoria uses the few lines of dialogue she has to make a grand statement which connects the history behind the lowrider culture to the struggle going on between Miguel and his sons. The performance is great and she makes her impact.

Beside the car story, which it digs into the history and culture behind the lowrider tradition, the story has a depth which makes a commentary into the social construct of the Hispanic family.

“Lowriders” is one of the few movies of 2017 which tells a human story in a natural way which audiences of any ethnicity or age can relate to.

This isn’t the fictitious la la land LA scenery, it can almost be an east LA story family drama pulled from the streets of LA.

It’s beautiful to see the gritty less than perfect LA scenery and the dysfunctional family story which almost puts a mirror to the hispanic family dynamic.

“Lowriders” is a gorgeous story which doesn’t need a hero, doesn’t need a villain and that still constructs a story which is exceptional.

Forget about legends and myths, there’s no CG in the real world and no explosions are needed to tell this modern story that is fantastic for this day and time.

@Thisfunktional Movie Review: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOLUME 2

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOLUME 2 has a more Family Friendly Storyline

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

Although “Guardians of the Galaxy” was light hearted and fun, Volume 2 has more family friendly visuals and family drama.

The storyline dealing with father-son relationships and the family dynamic makes Volume 2 different from the original, but it hits too many of the same marks as the first to really stand out.

Director James Gunn said he was very conscious of making the story different from the original and he felt they accomplished that.

The story isn’t the problem because it fills in the big questions left after the first.

The pacing, the insertion of comedic elements and the use the music feels much like watching the first movie.

The dramatic element of Volume 2 is more intense, but at the same time the comedy seems safe and can become repetitive, how many times can the audience laugh at Rocket being rude, Star-Lord being oblivious or Drax being well Drax.

Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper and physical stand in Sean Gunn, is a bigger part of the story as is Yandu, played by Michael Rooker.

Actress Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora, said that it was fantastic having Sean Gunn be there as Rocket, it was also fascinating to see Sean compact himself to the Rocket size.

Producer Kevin Feige said that the editors had a much easier job with Rocket since Sean Gunn was physically there.

Sean Gunn said that the most difficult part came when he had to be in a scene with both Kraglin and Rocket, since getting down to Rocket’s size was difficult with Kraglin’s outfit.

Rooker was magnificent as Yandu and brought so much out of the character that from the moment audiences see him on screen they connect with his character.

Rooker said he was challenged with Yandu because when you first see him he’s vulnerable and it wasn’t an easy thing to do with such a strong character.

Continuing with the emotional story is Nebula, played by Karen Gillan.

Nebula has a complex role with hatred, sadness, confusion, revenge and so many strong emotions to play.

Gillan was great, beautiful, even as a bald blue half cyborg alien, and strong. Her evolution through the movie happens so subtle that it feels natural.

Everyone of the returning character’s and actors do fine, with the exception of Baby Groot who is thrown in there many times just cause he’s a cute distraction.

Marvel Studio’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” is entertaining and seems like a good movie for the family, but falls short of being the attention grabbing movie that the first one was. The IMX 3D experience makes the movie more enjoyable.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” is out now in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D.

Official Final Trailer for WONDER WOMAN Rise of the Warrior

Official Final Trailer for WONDER WOMAN Rise of the Warrior

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

The final trailer for Warner Bros. “Wonder Woman” has been released and it seems to show more of the rise of the Wonder Woman as a warrior, but in what seems to be a chronological trailer.

The events of the trailer seem to be step by step to where Wonder Woman reveals herself to the world.

There doesn’t seem to be any cameos by any of the rest of the Justice League, but I’m sure that will not be the case for the movie.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment comes the epic action adventure “Wonder Woman” starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright, directed by Patty Jenkins.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior.

Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat.

Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

@Thisfunktional talks with Kate Tumanova AMERICAN EXORCISM

Written by Jesus Figueroa

Before watching “American Exorcism,” actress Kate Tumanova talked with Jesus Figueroa, @Thisfunktional of thisfunktional.com, about the film and her leading role as Caroline.

Tumanova comes from a modeling background in Russia, but once she came to the United States she quickly got into acting school and soon started booking roles in different projects.

After this talk it was clear that “American Exorcism” was a film to look forward to. Not sure what to expect, the bad girl role Tumanova plays is shocking and fantastic.

“American Exorcism” has an unexpected fresh take on exorcism stories. The typical exorcist that comes from a religious background is still a part of the story, but a more physical and different kind of spiritual fighter is present as well.

Check out the interview above and read a full review of the movie here.

Fighting the Supernatural in a Different Way in “AMERICAN EXORCISM”

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

When an all-American teenage girl begins to be too rebellious for her adopted father, the ex-exorcist father comes around to help make sure demons haven’t followed her in “American Exorcism.”

This may not be a movie for the entire family, but its an entertaining view with some horror, some action and some teenage angst.

Damon, played by Michael Filipowich, decides he will step away from his exorcist life with his partner Will, played by Braxton Davis, for his family.

Filipowich is strange and looks different from what is expected from a holy fighter of demons. He brings a good change to the typical religious exorcist.

Davis is the clean cut bible exorcist which contrasts the look of Filipowich. The two work well together as they play off each other well.

Tragic events separate Damon from young Caroline, played by Sicily Fontaine, until a teenage Caroline, played by Kate Tumanova, starts to take her rebellious behavior too far and her biological father comes back into her life.

Fontaine is a typical little girl who is enjoying her life with her parents. She’s not on screen too much, just about 5 minutes in the beginning of the film.

Tumanova comes in as the grown teenage Caroline and plays the rebellious, bad girl well. The young look to her gives her an innocent look which isn’t what you expect from her behavior. This performance is the best part of the movie.

The story revolves around Damon and his teenage daughter Caroline and the strange things happening in the life of Caroline.

The non-typical methinks that Damon uses to exorcise demons is an interesting method, which ads a more action element to the movie.

At points the things Damon does can come off as comical, but then the immediate suspense after adds to the scary supernatural element.

Caroline is fantastic at being a force to be reckoned with and a captivating character which can be manipulative and mysterious.

The ending is a good payoff. There’s a good twist which if the audience pays attention can see it coming.

@Thisfunktional Movie Review: SOMEWHERE BEAUTIFUL

SOMEWHERE BEAUTIFUL Shows Something Good among the Chaos of Life

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

“Somewhere Beautiful” takes audiences through the journeys of two people at different points of their romantic life.

The movie is shot beautifully as each frame can possibly be a framed photograph, the story is detailed and can be slow at points, but the ending is rewarding.

Elena, played by María Alche, finds herself with new feelings for as she accompanies her photographer husband, played by Anthony Bonaventura, and his guide, played by Pablo Cedrón, who turns out to be a worldly, knowledgeable guy who Elena is impressed by.

Alche is a great actress that subtly brings out soft emotions which keep the audience guessing her character’s intentions. She is great along side both Bonaventura and Cedrón.

Bonaventura is dry in his delivery of his lines. He brings a sternness and facial expressions which help the audience connect with his character.

Cedrón is charismatic and suave with a mature rough look. He contrasts the clean stoic Bonaventura.

Film director Albert, played by Albert Kodagolian, comes home to find his wife gone and his mother taking care of his child.

Kodagolian wrote, directed and starred in this movie. With so much going on he still delivers a a marvelous performance.

Albert goes through some turmoil as his marriage falls apart slowly.

The stories are weaved together which contrasts the stories and yet finds a similarity in each.

I give this drama 5 out of 5 Popcorns. The performances in this movie are spectacular and the flow is always moving forward. Writer-director Albert Kodagolian created a spectacular story and was able to find the right cast, fantastic locations and a good direction to take the movie in.
