Movie Review by @mikethemovieguy – LOVE & BANANAS: AN ELEPHANT STORY | #loveandbananas

Elephant rescues in Thailand are rare, unpredictable and often life threatening. After waiting over 2 years, actor/director Ashley Bell and a team of elephant rescuers led by world renowned Asian elephant conservationist and TIME Magazine’s Hero of Asia, Sangdeaun Lek Chailert, embark on a daring mission to rescue Noi Na, a 70-year old partially blind trekking elephant and bring her 500 miles across Thailand to freedom.

African elephants are slaughtered for their ivory, but sadly the plight of the Asian Elephant has been completely overlooked even though they are the elephant we are most familiar with in zoos, circuses and elephant rides. Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story exposes the cruel secret that every Asian elephant has had to endure to become a service animal; a process known as Pajan, aka The Crush Box. Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story aims to ignite a new way of thinking about this species and shows what can be done to prevent the extinction of Asian elephants.

Man! I had the chance to watch this last night. It has to be one of the best documentary’s I’ve seen in a long time. LOVE & BANANAS: AN ELEPHANT STORY definitely took me on a roller coaster of emotions.

Sadness. Anxiety. Happiness.

Everyone involved in this mission is awesome!! Lek is a BEAST!!! This little lady here…AMAZING. Shoutouts to Ashley Bell and her team for bringing this to the screen.

LOVE & BANANAS: AN ELEPHANT STORY is a MUST WATCH film! After watching it – I immediately followed all their social media to help spread the word on what’s happening to Asian Elephants. I might not have a zillion dollars but anything helps, right?

People!! Watch this film where and when you can. LOVE & BANANAS: AN ELEPHANT STORY is screening in select cities now & there are more to come. Check out the links below for more info.

‘Short Horror’ Reviews by @mikethemovieguy: PLACEBO & A WALK HOME ALONE

Hey horror fans!! I got these two horror shorts sent to me a couple of months ago – – I know, I know…I’m late as hell but with work, my 3 yr old son AND 1 month son…the Mike household has been a little bonkers.

The first short is called: PLACEBO

A young woman undergoes surgery to look like her favorite celebrity.

My thoughts: I enjoyed it. For a 2 minute and change horror short…it hit the shot. (lol) Kind of freaky and sad. Good stuff!

Now for the second short…it was called A WALK HOME ALONE

Recent cases of missing women have something in common in “A Walk Home Alone” starring Maura Stephens, Jurgen Vollrath, Jenn Nangle, and Patrick Sutters. Written & Directed by Andrew J.D. Robinson http://15secondhorror.ca/workobeyfilms

My thoughts: WTFFFFFFFF!!!!! Why didn’t she send that damn text?! (lol) Ok. I liked this one a lot. This brought back some Twilight Zone feels right here. Great stuff!!

Oh yeah…boyfriend’s going to feel like shit, huh?

Movie Review by Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ | ‘The Darkness’ : Never Take Things That Don’t Belong to You!

The Darkness

From the Producers of The Purge and Insidious comes THE DARKNESS…

A family returns from a Grand Canyon vacation, haunted by an ancient supernatural entity they unknowingly awakened and engages them in a fight for their survival. The Darkness is directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) and stars Kevin Bacon and David Mazouz (Gotham).

So, what did I think of THE DARKNESS?

OK…before I tell you – – I gotta share my freaky story.

So I watched this late last night – – like around 12:30 – – right in the middle of the movie – – when everything starts getting crazy – – all of sudden – on my 2 yr old’s baby monitor – I start to hear him talk. Crazy. I know. Question is…

Was he dreaming OR was he talking to ‘something’ or ‘someone?’ I guess I’ll never know – unless it happens again tonight. (lol)

OK, OK. Enough of that. What did I think of THE DARKNESS?

I like it. It was actually better than I expected. I’m always on the fence when it comes to supernatural PG-13 movies.

I thought the cast did a great job. Kevin Bacon (dad) was cool. Radha Mitchell (mom) was cool. Lucy Fry (daughter) was really cool. She had some intense moments – – very believable. David Mazouz (son) was really cool as well. This kid’s got some acting chops. It’s crazy to see how sophisticated he is as Bruce Wayne on Gotham – – – but in this – – he did good.

I thought the special effects were dope.

I thought the story of the ‘ancient demons’ were pretty sweet.

I thought the movie had some jumpy moments here and there…but nothing really scary.

I think THE DARKNESS is worth the watch – especially if you’re into movie like this.

Oh – – on the Blu-ray + Digital HD copy I got – – on the front cover it says: INCLUDES SHOCKING ALTERNATE ENDING!

I watched it…and personally…I’m SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad they didn’t go with that ending instead. Yeah. I wasn’t a fan. (lol)

I give THE DARKNESS…3 out of 5 popcorns!

Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ Review: THE DWARVENAUT

Last night I had the chance to watch the documentary film…THE DWARVENAUT.

DWARVENAUT – Theatrical Trailer from Nate Taylor on Vimeo

What did I think of THE DWARVENAUT?

I loved it. It was sooooooo good. This company is too sweet. The sculptures – amazing. The skills. Damn!

10 minutes into the documentary I was blown away…and I’m not just saying this because I used to play Dungeons & Dragons. (ohh the memories) It’s just a really well done documentary.

THE DWARVENAUT is a must see…especially if you’re a fan of D&D & fantasy flicks! Great job Mr. Director and story tellers. Great job.

THE DWARVENAUT releases on VOD today!

Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ Movie Review: Worry Dolls

On June 22 I posted a press release for the upcoming UK release of WORRY DOLLS.

Well guess what?! I got the chance to watch it…

WORRY DOLLS – TRAILER
from Jinga Films on Vimeo.

What did I think of WORRY DOLLS…

I liked it.

I thought it had a great start. (lol) It jumps right into action! In the first 10 minutes of the movie – SERIOUS blood and brains. Texas Chainsaw Massacre style. (lol) Loved it. I think that’s one of the main things I liked about the movie – – the special effects. They definitelys didn’t hold back – – for a movie that didn’t seem to have a huge budget – I thought they got the job done!

I enjoyed the serial killer.

I enjoyed the dolls.

I dug it all.

I give WORRY DOLLS… 3 1/2 out of 5 popcorns.

Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ Movie Review: Careful What You Wish For

I actually just finished watching CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR…like literally. I just took off the headphones…climbed out of bed…trying not to wake the wifey…walked through the living room…trying not to wake the dog…who could possibly wake up our ‘almost’ 2 year old son…all this…for Mr. Nick Jonas. (lol)

Careful What You Wish For

Did I like the movie?

I did. Any type of movie that can get my ‘WTF feelings’ going – – is alright with me. (lol)

Here’s what the movie’s about – OH…DO NOT watch the trailer. I know some of you girls will be tempted to – – DON’T! Personally…I thought it gave away too much.

Careful What You Wish For

Ok – real quick. Nick Jonas plays a young dude named Doug. He comes with parents to a little vacation spot – does a little summer work before heading off to college. One day – he notices a couple moving next door – – – the husband played by 1988’s YOUNG GUNS Dermot Mulroney – – he’s a rich douche who happens to have a super hot wife named Lena, played by the lovely Isabel Lucas. Right off the bat – she’s gives him the old ‘I wanna meet your penis look.’ Well – that’s what it looked like to me. (lol) Instead of playing it smart – – – his penis does all the thinking and decision making for him and well…it gets a little ‘complicated.’ (lol)

Careful What You Wish For

You get the picture. Right? Well…I hope so. (lol)

Like I said before – I liked the movie.

20 minutes into the movie I was like, “WTF Nick Jonas?!”

40 minutes into the movie I was like, “WTF Nick Jonas?!”

Last 20 minutes of the movie I was like, “WTF Nick Jonas..you idiot!”

Careful What You Wish For

See. This movie got my emotions going. (lol) I thought Nick Jonas did a great job in the acting department. It was super cool seeing Paul Sorvino is this. (I’m a fan)

I could see the girls loving this one – – Nick Jonas sexy time. Nick Jonas with his shirt off. Nick Jonas in just his boxer shorts. (lol) Yeah, yeah…he works out. (lol) Personally…my eyes were locked on Lena, the crazy, seductive chick. (lol)

CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR hits theaters and On Demand this Friday. The same day as Nick Jonas’s new album drops – Niceeeeee dude. Nice.

If you happen to check it out the movie – let me know your thoughts.

I give CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR… 3 out of 5 popcorns. It could be a cool solo or date flick…which ever floats your boat….get it? BOAT. (lol)

Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ Movie Review: Bite

Movie fans!! Horror fans! I check it out…it’s called…

Before I talk BITE – here’s a little info in the movie first…BITE is NOW open in select U.S. Theaters, and all major VOD and On Demand platforms – so after watching the trailer or reading my review – – you can find and watch it there. 😉

NOW…what did I think of the slimy, horror flick they call BITE?!

👉 I thought it was alright. I thought the trailer was freakier though.

Bite

👍 I thought it had a cool story I could relate to. 😳 I actually frequent Costa Rica…soooo after watching this…I told the wifey, “Well. I’m not swimming in any water there NO MO!!” 😂

👍 I liked the special effects in the movie. I bet it was real fun making this flick…all those eggs…all that slim. 😳

Bite

👎 For me…it had a slow start. It felt like forever to get really going…but when it finally does. OH Crap! There’s this one “Stomp the Yard” part….DAMNN! The last 15-20 minutes. 👌

Overall all…I thought it was a good morning. Glad it had dope payoff. Question is…will there be a Part 2?! 😳

I give BITE…3 out of 5 popcorns!

Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ Movie Review: They’re Watching

12744622_1123653927678982_1947139288668552467_n[1]

After the wifey, son and dog all went to bed – I washed off all the cooties …climbed into bed…and started…THEY’RE WATCHING.

Here’s what the movie’s about…

“When an American home improvement TV show visits a remote Eastern European village, the young crew thinks the lack of mocha lattés and free wifi will be the worst of their problems. But after their filming interrupts the superstitious villagers’ private religious ritual, the situation takes a turn for the homicidal… and when the blood starts flowing, that’s when things get really weird. With THEY’RE WATCHING, noted graphic novelists and animators Micah Wright and Jay Lender turn a classic horror premise upside down to create a fresh, funny, eye-popping twist on the genre.”

What did I think of THEY’RE WATCHING?

🙌 I loved it! It’s got everything. Intense moments, laughs, jumpy moments, blood and gore. Did I mention…blood and gore? Ohhh yeahhhhhhhh!!

👍 I thought the cast was great. You find yourself liking the right people and hating the right people.

😬 I loved Vladimir the realtor – played by Dimitri Diatchenko. He was freaking hilarious. Alex played by Kris Lemche made me laugh as well. Becky’s soccer boyfriend – another funny dude. His opening Home Hunters Global one-on-one interviews – 😂

👍 I thought it was creative on how they shot the “first person/found footage” thing – wait. Does that even make sense? 😜

👍 I loved how I could relate to the movie 😁 – – the wifey loves watching her ‘House Hunting’ shows on TV – – so once the movie started – it was hilarious to me. I should have woken her up. “Hey Hun! Wake up. Check out this Home Hunters show!” 😂

👍 It was a great ‘packaged’ movie – – it kept my interest – – I found myself laughing in bed – – trying not to wake up the wifey — than BAM!! All hell breaks loose!! I went from eyes glued to the screen – – to “WTF?!?!” – – to “HOLY CRAP BALLS!!” 🙌

They're Watching

Just my two cents – I think THEY’RE WATCHING is totally worth the watch. It actually hits selected theaters and On Demand today.

You can see more at theyrewatchingmovie.com

🚫But don’t watch the trailer🚫 – – just listen to my words! Grab some popcorn – – grab someone and watch THEY’RE WATCHING. It’s a dope comedy, thriller, horror, WTF movie. 🙌

I give THEY’RE WATCHING… 5 out of 5 popcorns!!

Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ Interview: Ryan Hurst & Kyle Gallner of “Outsiders” [podcast]

Outsiders

Hey TV fans!! Earlier this week I had the chance to interview Ryan Hurst and Kyle Gallner for Variety Radio Online. We chatted about about the new series “Outsiders” on WGN America and they even answered a few Twitter questions from their fans. Talk about some really cool dudes.

“Outsiders” airs Tuesday’s at 9pm on WGN America.

Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ Movie Review: The Final Project

First…#TheFinalProject opened February 12th in Houston. If you need other theater locations – check out thefinalprojectmovie.com 👍

Now…lets talk about this movie. 🤔

6 college students decide to make a documentary for their graduation project – A documentary about one of the most notorious haunted houses in America…Lafitte Plantation. They pack all their ghost hunting equipment (which is not a lot) and all their camera gear. Once it goes dark…all hell breaks loose! 😱

The Final Project

👍: I can’t brag about anything. I really wanted to like this movie. ☹️ I’m not saying I hated it. I guess I just expected more from the trailer is all. I was hoping to get freaked out or scared…but…nope. 😔

👎: For me…It took too long to get to the plantation and when the killings started…those were too quick. No blood. I needed blood…something. I would have liked seeing some of the plantation items killing those fools…that would have been cool. 😂 It kind of felt like The Blair Witch Project meets Paranormal Activity…but I’ve seen that already…I was just hoping for something different…something taken to the next level. 🙁

Keep in mind folks…if it didn’t work for me…it doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. 🤔 If you check it out – let me know.

I give THE FINAL PROJECT…a 2 out of 5 popcorns. Man. I really wanted to like it more.

Mike ‘The Movie Guy’ Movie Review: Finders Keepers

Finders Keepers

Wasup movie fans?! I checked out a movie…well…more like a documentary…but it’s still a movie, right? (lol)

When his amputated leg is discovered in a grill sold at a North Carolina auction, John Wood finds himself at the center of a worldwide media frenzy. Believing the new-found attention to be his chance at doing some great things in an otherwise disappointing, wayward life, he’s quickly swept up in the hysteria as the leg’s enterprising buyer, Shannon Whisnant, then sues to regain its custody. But the stranger-than-fiction chain of events, fueling John’s drug addiction and compounded by generations of his familial dysfunction, soon sets John on the streets and heading to his certain demise. Just in time, however, another twist in these fantastical occurrences gives John a final shot at becoming whole for the first time in his life.

Today’s the day…FINDERS KEEPERS hit select theaters TODAY and can also be seen on VOD/iTunes. If you happen to live here in Houston – you can watch this at the Alamo Drafthouse Vintage Park.

So. What did “I” think of FINDERS KEEPERS?!

I thought it was great. One of the best documentaries I’ve seen in a long time. Even the wife liked and she hardly likes anything I watch. (lol)

I really enjoyed the way it was shot, the music used in the film, the editing. I call a movie like this…”A perfect little package…with a nice bow on top.”

It’s definitely worth the watch people. It’s a crazy story. It’s kind of hard to believe it actually happened…but it did.

I give FINDERS KEEPERS…4 out of 5 popcorns!
