@Thisfunktional #MovieReview: BABY DRIVER

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

The fast-paced “Baby Driver” develops a great story quickly, makes use of every scene and captivates from the opening scene on.

The music can drive the movie on its own, but have characters develop and evolve through out the movie helps to get the audience invested in the plot.

Writer-directed Edgar Wright said that this was a story he had been wanting to tell for many years and it all started with music.

The diligent research he did made the story based on actual reality, but the pacing was driven by the beats of the songs.

The soundtrack helped him develop what would happen to each character and continue moving the story forward scene after scene.

Actor Jamie Foxx, who plays Bats, said he kept the music going between sets because it was important for the story, important for how the characters would react on screen and it made a difference when actors would need to hit queues.

Although the the cast have been on numerous sets for different projects, Actor Ansel Elgort, who plays lead character Baby, found the entire experience unique because everyone was committed to making this story exactly what Wright would be proud of.

Elgort also said that coming off “Baby Driver’s” set and onto his next project was difficult. He was able to play music between takes to keep the mood. His co-stars would look at him funny for playing music between takes as well.

After months of playing Baby and wearing headphones, with the scene’s music and sound effects playing, Elgort needed some time to decompress.

Actress Lily James paired up with Elgort well and was thrilled to play off of Elgort.

James brings out a vulnerability in her character which shows the trust she had in Elgort.

The movie seemed to be written for Elgort to star in, James said.

Actress Eiza Gonzalez and Jon Hamm play complimentary character which are only complete when they are together, and most of the time when they are on screen they are touching.

Gonzalez was interested in the fact that none of the characters tell their own back story, they each tell a bit of each other’s back story.

Hamm thought that by Wright doing that he was able to create the myth of each character and make Baby more of a legend, which works to bring compassion and some level of curiosity.

Walt Disney Animation Studios invited Press to Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of BAMBI with Voice Actors for Bambi, Thumper
Limited edition lithograph artist talks about history
and impact of “Bambi”

Written by Jesus Figueroa

A tour of the old animation building — including a walk through of Walt Disney’s office, work office and secretary’s office — showed the hands on leader that Disney was.

The Walt Disney Signature Series Classic “Bambi” has been iconic for including themes Disney had not had in their animated films before, the beautiful aesthetics and visual style and for despite all odds making an impact on animation style and storytelling.

“I saw it the first time at 24,” artist Paul Felix said. “I was spared the trauma.”

The themes introduced in this animated film included the death of a main character, the social commentary of the importance of the environment and the depiction of man as nature’s villain.

It also seemed that for the first time a major studio casted children to roles.

The voice actor for Bambi, Donald Dunagan was cast at age 5 after being in a few other roles and the voice actor for Thumper Peter Behn was 4 and had auditioned for Bambi but fit the role of Thumper better.

Dunagan said that he had been on studio lots before and there was a pompous feel to the people working at the studios, but not at Disney studios.

Behn said that they had so much help to do their lines, since they were so young, and even though they didn’t continue their careers in acting were thrilled with the experience.

Both Dunagan and Behn recall seeing Walt Disney, but didn’t place him as being the head of the studio.

Walt Disney was always running around, had his sleeves rolled up and helped out wherever he could.

Dunagan said Walt Disney was very hands on like a good leader would be.

“Bambi” faced several challenges because of the time period that it was made. Even though Release was pushed back because of World War 2 and the bombing of Pearl Harbor, it was eventually released and in the first run didn’t make any money.

Neither of the young voice actors knew that the movie would go on to reach the level it did and neither could have fathomed being cemented in history along with the movie which continues to inspire.

“Bambi,” which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, joined the Collection on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on May 23, and on Blu-ray™, DVD and On-Demand on June 6.

IT COMES AT NIGHT Photo Gallery

For his follow-up to the award-winning and critically acclaimed “KRISHA,” Texasbased writer-director Trey Edward Shults returns to the familiar subject of family — more specifically families confronting violent forces from inside and out. In the psychological horror thriller “IT COMES AT NIGHT,” an unnamed plague has disrupted daily life on an unimaginable scale.

Confined to a rural home at the story’s outset, one extended family member puts to death an elderly member who is afflicted with the mysterious contagion.

The family’s teenage son, Travis, is deeply traumatized by the mercy killing, though he tries his best to create order from this chaotic new reality.

On a daily basis, he must also confront the looming presence of his well-meaning but overprotective father.

A fever dream of complex family dynamics, “IT COMES AT NIGHT” examines these encroaching forces as they metastasize and threaten the delicate bonds of everyone involved

Imagine the end of the world.

Now imagine something worse.

A teenage boy (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.) as he grapples with mounting terrors — both external and internal — in the aftermath of an unnamed cataclysm.

Secure within a desolate home with his vigilant, protective, and heavily armed parents (Joel Edgerton and Carmen Ejogo), 17-year-old Travis navigates fear, grief and paranoia amid scarce resources as a desperate young couple (Christopher Abbott and Riley Keough) seeks refuge in his family home with their young child.

Despite the best intentions of both families, panic and mistrust boil over as the horrors of the outside world creep ever closer.

But they are nothing compared to the horrors within, as Travis discovers that his father’s commitment to protecting the family may cost him his soul.

Official Final Trailer for WONDER WOMAN Rise of the Warrior

Official Final Trailer for WONDER WOMAN Rise of the Warrior

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

The final trailer for Warner Bros. “Wonder Woman” has been released and it seems to show more of the rise of the Wonder Woman as a warrior, but in what seems to be a chronological trailer.

The events of the trailer seem to be step by step to where Wonder Woman reveals herself to the world.

There doesn’t seem to be any cameos by any of the rest of the Justice League, but I’m sure that will not be the case for the movie.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment comes the epic action adventure “Wonder Woman” starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright, directed by Patty Jenkins.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior.

Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat.

Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

@Thisfunktional talks with Kate Tumanova AMERICAN EXORCISM

Written by Jesus Figueroa

Before watching “American Exorcism,” actress Kate Tumanova talked with Jesus Figueroa, @Thisfunktional of thisfunktional.com, about the film and her leading role as Caroline.

Tumanova comes from a modeling background in Russia, but once she came to the United States she quickly got into acting school and soon started booking roles in different projects.

After this talk it was clear that “American Exorcism” was a film to look forward to. Not sure what to expect, the bad girl role Tumanova plays is shocking and fantastic.

“American Exorcism” has an unexpected fresh take on exorcism stories. The typical exorcist that comes from a religious background is still a part of the story, but a more physical and different kind of spiritual fighter is present as well.

Cast, Crew Talk about HOW TO BE A LATIN LOVER

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

Eugenio Derbez and Selma Hayek take the lead in “How to be a Latin Lover,” a Lionsgate movie out April 28.

The movie tells the story of a male gold-digger Maximo, played by Derbez, who loses it all when his elderly wife throws him out for a younger man, pleated by Michael Cera.

The hilarious Derbez is over the top with his portrayal, which works because of the antics he has to go through.

Cera is funny and plays off Derbez well. The two are a good fit to be rivals.

Maximo moves in with his sister Sara, played by Selma Hayek, and her son Hugo, played by Raphael Alejandro, who he hasn’t seen for years.

Hayek is great with a serious and funny role. Her ability to switch her emotions throughout the story in a genuine manner comes off fantastic. It’s a beautiful role for her and she is great.

Alejandro is the key for this movie. His role keeps the movie moving forward. His tenderness gets the audience connected to the story.

The story has some very funny moments which the audience can’t help but laugh at.

The pacing of the movie is slow, but still moves forward with each scene.

Derbez said he is happy that an American studio, Lionsgate, took a chance on a movie where the two leads are Latino.

Although Derbez has had a few successful movies in the U.S. market, latinos have still struggled to get studios to take them serious as leading roles.

Derbez said he was shocked at getting a high rating during test screenings. He wasn’t sure how his style of comedy would mesh with the American writers’ style.

The comedy can be appreciated by people of different age groups and of any ethnicity as the story could be about any man in the same situation as Maximo.

Filming in LA was another challenge for the movie, but thanks to the California Rebate, which “How to be a Latin Lover” was the first movie by Lionsgate to receive it, the movie was able to have Hayek and shoot in LA and was able to go after the actors that were in this movie.

The chemistry between Derbez and Hayek jumps off the screen. The two seemed natural together.

Hayek said she was happy to be on set with Derbez because they connected so well. She loves to improvise and Derbez was able to go along with it and make it seamless.
