Oscar winner Octavia Spencer will send chills down your spine in the new thriller from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Entertainment, MA coming to theaters May 31!

About MA:

Everybody’s welcome at Ma’s. But good luck getting home safe.

Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer stars as Sue Ann, a loner who keeps to herself in her quiet Ohio town. One day, she is asked by Maggie, a new teenager in town (Diana Silvers, Glass), to buy some booze for her and her friends, and Sue Ann sees the chance to make some unsuspecting, if younger, friends of her own.

She offers the kids the chance to avoid drinking and driving by hanging out in the basement of her home. But there are some house rules: One of the kids has to stay sober. Don’t curse. Never go upstairs. And call her “Ma.”

But as Ma’s hospitality starts to curdle into obsession, what began as a teenage dream turns into a terrorizing nightmare, and Ma’s place goes from the best place in town to the worst place on earth.

Ma also stars Juliette Lewis (August: Osage County) as Maggie’s mom, Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast) as a local dad, Missi Pyle (Gone Girl) as his girlfriend, and McKaley Miller (TV’s Hart of Dixie), Corey Fogelmanis (TV’s Girl Meets World), Gianni Paolo (TV’s Power) and Dante Brown (Lethal Weapon TV series) as Maggie’s friends.

From Tate Taylor, the acclaimed director of The Help and Get On Up, and blockbuster producer Jason Blum (Get Out, Halloween, The Purge series) comes a thriller anchored by a daring and unexpected performance from Spencer, one of the most powerful actors of her generation.

Ma is written by Scotty Landes (Comedy Central’s Workaholics), is produced by Blum for his Blumhouse Productions, by Taylor, and by John Norris (executive producer, Get On Up), and is executive produced by Spencer, Couper Samuelson, Jeanette Volturno, and Robin Fisichella.

GREEN BOOK | Feel-Good Drama ft. Mahershala Ali & Viggo Mortensen

green_book[1]Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, Universal Pictures will be releasing the feel-good drama, GREEN BOOK.

In his foray into powerfully dramatic work as a feature director, Peter Farrelly helms the film inspired by a true friendship that transcended race, class and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line. The film stars Academy Award winner MAHERSHALA ALI (Moonlight, Hidden Figures) and Academy Award nominee VIGGO MORTENSEN (Eastern Promises, The Lord of the Rings trilogy).

Jim Burke (The Descendants), Charles B. Wessler (The Heartbreak Kid) produce alongside Farrelly’s fellow writers, Brian Currie and Nick Vallelonga, and Farrelly.  The drama is executive produced by Participant’s Jeff Skoll (The Help) and Jonathan King (Lincoln), along with Octavia Spencer (Fruitvale Station) and Kwame L. Parker (Kill Bill series), as well as Cinetic Media’s John Sloss (Boyhood) and Steven Farneth.  Linda Cardellini (Brokeback Mountain, The Founder) co-stars.

SYNOPSIS: When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans.  Confronted with racism, danger—as well as unexpected humanity and humor—they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

Green book will begin limited engagements on Friday, November 16, 2018, before going wide on Wednesday, November 21, 2018.

Movie Review by Kristin: GIFTED | #GiftedMovie

IMG_3145

Hello, movie lovers!!

I’ve been wanting to see GIFTED for so long, and I finally got to watch it last night! I absolutely loved it! The cast was phenomenal and Mckenna Grace is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

SYNOPSIS: Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the 7-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary.

To be quite honest, this didn’t even feel like a movie. This felt like I was a spirit observing a beautiful relationship between an uncle and his niece. The acting didn’t feel forced at all and Mckenna’s performance didn’t just tug at my heart strings . . . she obliterated them. The on-screen chemistry between her and Chris Evans was so incredibly heartwarming. Even her relationship with their neighbor, Roberta (Octavia Spencer), was  a thing of beauty.

This film touched me on a personal level because of the relationship I have with my own niece. Sometimes you put your own life on hold to help raise someone else and I felt Frank’s struggle entirely in that respect. You want to do right by them and make sure they have the best life possible, but everyone makes mistakes. It’s how you bounce back from those mistakes that makes all the difference.

What Mckenna does as Mary is what blows you away as a viewer. She is a math prodigy who struggles to balance being a genius and being a kid. Frank, Roberta and the one-eyed cat Fred, help to keep Mary on a track that finds that balance successfully.

I caught the film on HBO, but this is one that I would definitely recommend actually buying. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s beautiful, it’s tragic and it’s absolutely underestimated. It’s a wonderful indie film that I highly recommend!

Movie Review: THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT

IMG_3503

After what seems like the longest year ever, the third film installment of The Divergent Series was finally released!!  Allegiant is the film adaptation of the first 1/2 of the third novel of the same name written by Veronica Roth.  As announced, the second (and final) 1/2, titled The Divergent Series: Ascendant, will be released in March 2017.

SYNOPSIS: After the earth-shattering revelations of Insurgent, Tris must escape with Four beyond the wall that encircles Chicago, to finally discover the shocking truth of the world around them.

————————————–

As a reader of the novels, I’m one of those who search for differences in the films.  Many of you might have done the same for the second installment, Insurgent, where there were quite a few noticeable changes.  The same applies for Allegiant, but they actually work!

Despite a few minor character changes and several landscape differences between the film and novel, I actually enjoyed this one. Perhaps a bit more than Insurgent!  The escape scene was probably my favorite and was definitely a bad ass way to escape a horrible situation.  The world beyond the wall wasn’t at all what I imagined because I’d read the novels beforehand.  The world was described as an abandoned city with crumbled buildings, much like what the group has been used to.  In the film, however, the world is a toxic waste land that rains red, tinting the ground.  They’re rescued by members of the Bureau, where they’re taken for detoxification, which also wasn’t part of the novel.

Allegiant focuses on the genetic material of those involved in the experiment with the factions, along with those in failed experiments in other major cities. People were placed in these experiments to try and “heal” damaged genes in order to create those who are genetically pure, like Tris.  After discovering information regarding her mother and where she came from, Tris begins to trust David (Jeff Daniels), the director of the Bureau, despite Four’s warning not to.  When he discovers what the Bureau is actually up to, they try to erase him.  In an attempt to gain his sister’s trust again, Caleb tells her that Four has gone back to Chicago to try and stop the impending war between Evelyn and the factionless, and the group called the Allegiant, spearheaded by Johanna.

When someone betrays the group, Tris, Four, Caleb and Christina try to figure out who they can actually trust while finding a way to save the city they’ve called home, and expose the secrets held at the Bureau.

That being said, I thought this was a good installment!  Divergent is still my favorite of the three, but this one had great special effects, an abundance of bad assery, and a TON of Four!  The production value was great, considering the majority was filmed in front of a green screen.  Acting was great, and I’m still happy with the way this franchise was cast.  This film sets everything up for the fourth and final installment, and I can’t wait to see how they do it!  Just keep an open mind to the changes in the films.  There are always changes when a novel is made into a film, so just remember that it’s still the characters we know and love!

The Divergent Series: Allegiant was released in theaters on March 18, 2016.  Check it out and let me know what you thought!
