The holiday season is in full swing at Universal Studios Hollywood’s GRINCHMAS celebration with the park decorated in festive holiday decorations.

From the red carpet at the front gate having a nice Grinch green boarder and fancy decorated Christmas trees around the carpet, to the lights and other decorations hanging, the atmosphere is of joy and celebration.

Whoville has come to the center of Universal studios with a giant tree with a stage where a show hosted by Cindy Lou Who.

Along with a show visitors get an opportunity to take a picture with Max the dog and his single antler, have a social media post opportunity with the Grinch’s sleigh and interact with other who-villians.

After story time with Cindy Lou Who, the Studio Tour tram leads from King kong 3-D, to the Fast and the Furious 3-D experience and over to a special Grinchmas performance at Whoville set.

The special performance contains an appearance by the mean green Grinch.

“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” with some who-villians.

When the grinch joins in, the festivities become more exciting.

Make sure to get a seat in the second or third section of the tram as the first section really can’t see much of the performance.

It’s a short performance, but kids are sure to get a good treat with it.

The holidays get everyone in the spirit and ever the Despicable Me; Minion Mayhem house has gotten some small changes.

On the outside theres a Christmas Reef and the minions are wearing Santa Claus hats.

Christmas Trees and holiday decorations are set at the entrance of the virtual ride.

The streets have some decorations, but the most noticeable change is just that most of the minions are wearing Santa Claus hats.

Its great to see the children get excited to see the minions’ new look.

It’s a small change, but the festive spirit is enough to be joyful for kids.

On the other side of the park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has warm Butterbeer for the cooling temperature in Los Angeles.

It’s a sweet, maybe a bit too sweet, drink which has no alcohol so even kids can enjoy a warm cup of Butterbeer. There’s also a slush and the regular Butterbeer available.

Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood isn’t the only holiday treat, Universal CityWalk is also decorated and has CityWalk Holidays celebration going on.

A 40-foot tall Christmas tree with 200,000 LED icicles choreographed to the lights and sounds of the season is at the 5 Towers plaza.

Santa Claus will make nightly appearances and have special photo opportunities at the 5 Towers.

The iconic, dancing water fountain at the heart of CityWalk also will make a splash this holiday season.

This modern and impressive fountain displaying more than 230 individual power jets projects streams of choreographed water into the air complemented by red and green LED lights and with holiday-themed music.

Free concert performances at “5 Towers” and an eclectic ensemble of talented street performers will make CityWalk the ultimate L.A. holiday destination. Admission to Universal CityWalk is free.

CityWalk has free concerts and special appearances by Santa Claus.

Grinchmas runs weekends on Dec. 3-4 and 10-11, and daily from December 16 through January 1, 2017.

Viewers and Visitors May Make Wishes Beginning November 21

Universal CityWalk and NBC4 Southern California announced the second annual The Wishing Tree, inviting viewers to pay it forward by making a wish for someone deserving.

Beginning Nov. 21 through Dec. 15, viewers are encouraged to submit wishes for friends and family at NBCLA.com/wishingtree.

Guests are also invited to share their wishes in person at Universal CityWalk’s holiday-themed “5 Towers” plaza.

Every night from Dec. 12-16, NBC4 will grant the wishes live from Universal CityWalk during the NBC4 News starting at 4 p.m. with Weathercaster Fritz Coleman.

For the next four weeks, viewers are encouraged to make wishes for others who are important in their lives.

Everyone is welcome to join NBC4 and be part of the live wish reveals at the “5 Towers” plaza on Universal CityWalk.

Those visiting The Wishing Tree are encouraged to post photos and videos on social media using #NBC4You.

  • Who-ville Post Office – Visitors will have a chance to partake in the “Grow Your Heart 3 Sizes” campaign when they share their good deeds on a postcard and mail them to The Grinch. In return, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. and Random House Children’s Books, the publishers of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, will pay it forward by donating a book to a child in need through First Book on behalf of the sender.
  • Trim up the Tree Lot – Guests can design and personalize their own “Grinchmas” ornaments to help decorate the venue’s other “Grinchmas” trees or take them home as a memorable keepsake.
  • Story Time with Cindy-Lou Who – Cindy-Lou Who and her Who friends will gather guests of all ages – tall and small – for an engaging storytelling show of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The Dia de los Muertos design by artist fit beautifully on a high-quality Bluetooth Boom 2 speaker by Ultimate Ears.

Paired with the UE Boom app the speaker becomes a go to for clear portable sound.

Although this speaker was given to me for free, the $199 price tag for the limited edition Boom 2 seems reasonable, and with the ability to pair multiple speakers to the same device is reason enough to purchase more than one.

One speaker is loud enough to fill a good sized room in a house without distortion, but even at lower audio levels the sound stays clear and audible.

With the app having an equalizer the audio can be adjusted to however the listener likes.

Pairing an iPhone to the speaker was one of the easiest processes — open the app, turn on the speaker, tap on the speaker’s name and accept pairing, users can even name speakers to better organize them.

The battery life is phenomenal. Used sporadically throughout the day the battery lasted the entire day. It was maybe about 7 hours of use and it went down to about 30 percent.

The speaker in itself is beautiful with the colorful Dia de los Muertos design. The material is high quality and a great addition to a living room or bedroom.

The app adds function to the speaker.

The features the app offers merit mention of the app on its own.

UE Boom app offers complete control of the speaker (which includes on and off button), alarm clock features, multiple speaker control, control multiple phone pairing to each speaker and equalized for sound preference.

Upon turning the speaker on a nice drum beat alerts to connection and when turning off a different drum beat alerts to disconnecting .The alarm can be set with a custom playlist right on the app (which uses the music in the music app) or uses the previous song played and can be a higher audio level than regular listening level.

If a user is away from their device, but close to the speaker, several taps and interactions with the speaker control offering functions — the press of a button to turn off and on, taps on the speaker to pause, play, skip or repeat.

The speaker is versatile and beautiful. The design of the limited edition version is fantastic.

Latino artist Jiovanny Lopez draws the world-famous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Young Latino artist, Jiovanny Lopez is conquering Hollywood once again with his illustration of some of the world’s most recognized characters: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Jiovanny Lopez is making a name for himself through his portrait drawing of some of his favorite idols and celebrities with the goal to personally deliver these drawings to them. To date, he’s achieved this with Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, Thalia, Eugenio Derbez, Canelo Alvarez and Frank Grillo, among others. Currently, he has teamed up with Paramount Home Media Distribution in anticipation of the Blu-ray/DVD release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Jiovanny shares his film-inspired artwork and invites everyone to follow their dreams and exercise their passion for art.

Internet Essentials to Reach More Than 40 Percent of All HUD-Assisted Households Nationwide

Today from Washington D.C., Julián Castro, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Comcast executives announced an important expansion of the Internet Essentials program. This program provides Internet access to low-income families and now, all public housing residents in the U.S. living in Comcast’s service areas will be eligible to apply for Internet Essentials; this includes Hispanic families, which make up 24% of the total number of families living under public housing.

Currently, 60% of the 2.4 million people that benefit from the Internet Essentials program are Hispanic, which amounts to approximately 1.4 million Latinos in the U.S.

Additional statistics that make this announcement relevant to the Hispanic community:

  • With this new Internet Essentials expansion, approximately 480,000 Hispanic families in the U.S. could benefit from the program.
  • Currently, only 65.9% of Hispanic homes have high-speed Internet access compared to 76.2% of their white counterparts. Furthermore, a recent study from the U.S. Census Bureau found that 79.7% of Hispanics have a computer at home but only 66.7% have Internet access. This places U.S. Hispanics below the global average of 74%.
  • Provided more than 47,000 subsidized computers at less than $150 each.
  • Distributed for free nearly 51 million Internet Essentials program materials.
  • Broadcast more than 8.3 million public service announcements, valued at more than $100 million.
  • Welcomed 5 million visitors to the Internet Essentials websites in English and Spanish and its Online Learning Center.
  • Fielded more than 3.9 million phone calls to our Internet Essentials call center.
  • Made Internet Essentials available in nearly 48,000 schools in more than 5,000 school districts, in 39 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Partnered with 9,000 community-based organizations, government agencies, and federal, state, and local elected officials to spread the word.

 

“ConnectHome is opening doors of opportunity for our next generation of Americans,” said HUD Secretary, Julián Castro.  “Today’s announcement has the potential to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of kids across the nation by giving them the tools to reach their full potential.  We’re grateful to Comcast for joining the ConnectHome initiative, which has extended its reach to more than 1.5 million children in one short year.”

“This announcement reaffirms Comcast’s determination to make a meaningful impact to close the digital divide for low-income families in this country,” said David L. Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer of Comcast.  “This is the single largest expansion of the Internet Essentials program in its history, and we’re thrilled to be working with HUD to help connect even more families, including seniors, veterans, and adults without children, to the transformative power of having internet service at home.”

*These numbers are for all HUD-assisted homes of which approximately 35 percent have school-aged children and are, therefore, already eligible to apply for Internet Essentials. These numbers also include households covered by Comcast’s public housing pilot announced in March.

 

Between 2009 and 2014, broadband service providers spent over $422 billion on capital investments, and three in four American households now use broadband at home.  Despite this significant progress, one in four American households still don’t access the internet at home, particularly lower-income families with children.  According to the 2013 American Community Survey, less than 43 percent of individuals without a high school diploma or equivalent lack home internet access, but under this opportunity adults and young learners can get connected from the comfort of their own homes and take advantage of resources to get a GED credential, apply for and complete college, and acquire the necessary digital literacy skills to thrive in a highly competitive, global workforce.

ConnectHome strives to ensure students can access the same level of highspeed Internet at home that they have in their classrooms.  Today’s announcement furthers this vision, benefiting students of all ages.

This is the ninth time in five years Comcast has expanded eligibility for Internet Essentials. The policy change marks the first time, nationally, households without children eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program are officially able to apply for Internet Essentials. In 2011, the program was first offered to families with children eligible to receive a free school lunch from the National School Lunch Program.  It was expanded, in 2012, to children eligible for the reduced price school lunch program.  In 2013, Comcast expanded eligibility to include families with children in parochial, private, charter, and cyber schools, as well as students who are home schooled.  Last year, Comcast extended the program two more times, on a pilot basis, to low-income seniors and low-income community college students.  Earlier this year, another pilot program extended Internet Essentials to those living in public housing in Miami, Nashville, Philadelphia, and Seattle.  Finally, Comcast has expanded the number of schools where every student in the school will be deemed eligible for the program so long as a certain percentage of the kids in that school are NSLP eligible – from 70 percent, to 50 percent, and now to 40 percent.  As a result, Comcast estimates auto-enrollment now applies to about half of the 48,000 schools across its service area.

Internet Essentials Key Investments From August 2011 through December 2015, Internet Essentials has connected more than 600,000 low-income families, benefitting more than 2.4 million Americans, to the internet at home. Also since 2011, Comcast has invested more than $280 million in cash and in-kind support to help fund digital literacy training and education initiatives, reaching nearly 4.4 million people through national and local nonprofit community partners.

Projection mapping:

For the first time Ringling Bros. will be integrating projection mapping to help bring their epic space adventure to life in arenas around the country. Projection mapping utilizes specialized software that takes programmed 3D images of the production and optimizes video to project around the shapes and surfaces that have been programmed into the software.

 

Portal Display:

Ringling Bros. is known for its elaborate and intricate portals. The portal for OUT OF THIS WORLD is one of the largest in their history. Included in this portal are two screens that will be used to augment the projections within the arena. They will also be available and have opportunities during the pre-show for interactive communication with audiences.

Spotlight Tracking Technology

This tracking system can help light everything from performers to animals to props throughout the show. The system allows us to flawlessly follow and light fast-moving skaters, as well as opening a world of possibilities for various effects that could never have been accomplished with a hand-operated follow spot.

 

Puffersphere/Pufferfish:

The puffersphere is a round LED hi-resolution projection. In the OUT OF THIS WORLD, the narrator will tell the story of our space odyssey in this globe.

#PonleAcento | Adrián González debuts MLB Jersey with proper last name spelling

After 16 years in the big leagues Gold Glove Dodger’s first basemen Adrián González stepped up to the plate with his last name properly spelled for the first time during Monday’s (5/9/16) home game at Dodger Stadium. González has added an accent mark to the “a” in his last name and in an effort to inspire other Latinos within the MLB to do the same González challenged teammate Kiké Hernández prior to the game. Hernández has also joined González and was debuting a new jersey inspired by #PonleAcento.

A Magical Night Filled with Wizards and Celebs for “THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER”

“The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” finally opened at Universal Studios Hollywood on April 7, but on April 5 VIPs were allowed to preview the rides and the streets of Hogsmeade.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti welcomed all the Mugles to “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” and helped in presenting a magical performance by legendary conductor John Williams and the LA Philharmonic.

A fantastic light show on the walls of Hogwarts accompanied the opening ceremonies with a spectacular show that ended with a fireworks display.

Mayor Garcetti ended his speech with a short ending in Spanish in which he tried a spell to help the traffic in Los Angeles.

The red carpet was set and actors, musicians and executives walked the red carpet to “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.”

The area is detailed with the land’s signature ride, “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey,” and the family outdoor coaster, “Flight of the Hippogriff.”

“The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” opened on April 7 to the public.

Greg’s team, responsible for masterfully creating the show’s realistic decaying walkers, will construct prosthetics, utilize original molds and painstakingly apply paint and detailing to the attraction walkers.

The integral involvement of the creative team will not only inspire the emotional connection fans experience, it will be among the attraction’s key distinguishing characteristics that will define it as a living version of the show.

The “The Walking Dead” attraction will be located within an entirely new, custom built structure, situated within an expansive building complex just inside the theme park’s main entry.

Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance: Review

Hey everyone!  So I bought my mom tickets to see Lord of the Dance here in South Florida and figured I could write a review since they’re starting their US Tour here!

Growing up, I always remembered my mom watching this VHS with people dancing to Irish music.  It was hypnotizing!  About 10 years ago, my dad bought her tickets to see the show in Miami Beach, but there was no Michael Flatley.  After all these years, I saw that he was going to be going out on the final tour of his career and knew I had to take her to see him live.

Tonight I saw my mom’s eyes light up again.  She’d been anticipating this show all week and I’m so glad I got to take her.

This entire show was amazing.  Way more modern than the old VHS tape we used to watch!  The outfits were more modern, the setup of the show was as well.  One thing that remained equally amazing was the dancing.  The dancing is so synchronized and just incredible to watch.  Truly makes you want to get up and try it out…until you realize YOUR feet and legs don’t move that fast!  The visual effects were cool, the sound was great, the dancers were wonderful. It was a great show and one I would definitely recommend checking out.  You’d be amazed at how quick the dancers move their feet!

Harry Potter & the Cursed Child: Script To Be Released in Book Form!

Hey there, #PotterHeads!!

You’ve probably heard about Harry Potter & the Cursed Child becoming a play over in London, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably disappointed that the chances of you catching that play are slim to none!

Never fear!  Scholastic has revealed that they are releasing the script for the play in book form!  The book is set for release on July 31, 2016…which is Harry Potter’s birthday!  Clever, clever folks they are.  The book will also be released as an eBook that will be published over on Pottermore.
