A VERY PENTATONIX CHRISTMAS | TV Review

A Very Pentatonix Christmas - Season 1

Hey there!

If you know me at all, you know that I absolutely adore Pentatonix and everything they’re doing and have been doing for the past few years. I don’t remember why, but I missed their Christmas special last year and I refused to do it again this time around!

This year’s special aired Monday, November 27th on NBC at 10/9c, and it was adorable! If you missed it, don’t worry . . . the special will re-air on Wednesday, December 6th at 8pm. Do not be like me last year and miss both airings! You can also find a link to the special on their Twitter page @PTXofficial, so there are no excuses lol.

The one-hour special featured an amazing duet with Oscar, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA and Grammy Award winner Jennifer Hudson, an appearance by “America’s Got Talent” winner Darci Lynne Farmer and a duet (and hilarious sketch) with country music star Brett Eldredge.

As usual, the vocals were exceptional throughout the entire show.

The only part that threw me off a bit was Avi’s absence. If you were previously unaware, Avi Kaplan left the group earlier this year to pursue a solo career as Avriel & the Sequoias. Filling in on bass is Matt Sallee – who sounded incredible. While it was odd seeing Pentatonix perform without Avi, I thought Matt did a great job. He even got Avi’s stamp of approval on Twitter: “Beautiful! It is now officially Christmas. @mattsalleemusic you are killin on bass! Much love to you brother.” I’m not sure if he will be invited to permanently join the group, but it was a bit awkward at times when they would have him come out to sing bass with them and then he’d walk off stage while Kevin, Mitch, Kirstin and Scott entertained the audience. His name was also listed separately from the group during the credits. I say invite him to join! Avi approves and is doing his own thing, so why not?

Either way, I thought the show was a great little Christmas special. They didn’t sing my favorite, “That’s Christmas to Me,” or my mom’s favorite, “Hallelujah,” but I can forgive them for it because their vocals and the show’s stage design really put me in the Christmas spirit!

Here’s the video of their version of “Deck the Halls,” which was released ahead of the special:

If that didn’t satisfy your craving for great music, here’s a video of the duet with Jennifer Hudson from the special:

Be sure to check out the special, and watch for the closing of the show especially. The group sang their version of “Imagine” and it was absolutely beautiful. Let me know what you thought!

Happy Holidays, everyone!

PENTATONIX: World Tour 2016 (Review)

Hey there music fans!!  I wanted to take the time to talk about an amazing show I saw last night in Sunrise, FL and why it was so amazing!

We got to the BB&T Center to pick up our tickets and found out that our seats had been upgraded. Woot woot!  An up-and-coming artist named AJ opened up and was followed by Us the Duo, who were absolutely amazing!!

Pentatonix (Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola and Avi Kaplan) came out and showed the crowd why they’re putting a cappella on the map!  Their voices together are insane.  I was actually surprised to see how many loyal fans they seemed to have here in Miami because the fans down here are known to be fickle.  Every song they played was sung right back to them with such enthusiasm, it really made me happy to see.  As a former chorus nerd (& proud), I know how difficult it is to sing a cappella, so to see Pentatonix succeed at the rate they’re succeeding is definitely something to commend. They’re not just singing along to a track someone else made.  They have to lay out an intricate plan for each member to ensure the quality of sound they’re known for.  Definitely not your typical artist, and they deserve a ton of recognition for that. Each member brings something different to the table, and if you think Kevin is just a beatboxer, check him out playing the cello! Incredible!

The vocals were on point, the stage show didn’t overpower the group and the crowd was great.  The only “annoying” part about the show was the workers going around stopping people from taking pictures or videos.  On one hand I get it…you can’t truly experience the show behind your phone, but I like to have a few pictures and videos to relive the memories from the show in the future.  In any case, I managed to get a few pictures before having to put my camera away:

And this picture was posted by Us the Duo on Twitter following the show.  They came out and performed “If I Ever Fall in Love” with the group and it was nothing short of amazing. Especially when Kevin hit those high notes!!

It was definitely worth it to check this group out live, and I highly recommend the show for anyone who is a true fan of music and the hard work that goes into it.  This group is so incredibly talented and they really appreciate their fans. One of my favorite moments of the night was seeing how emotional they were.  Scott made a joke about having a sappy moment, but I loved it! They deserve the success they’re achieving, and I’m proud to be a fan. Check out the setlist below, and the dates for the remaining stops on the tour!

For some people, a cappella music is an acquired taste.  For others, like myself, I can get lost in it.  As someone who spent middle school and high school in chorus and drama, I know how difficult it is to perform songs a cappella…especially if someone is off!  For Pentatonix, they make it seem so incredibly simple.  Their arrangements and covers of songs are so intricate and flawless.

They won the third season of The Sing-Off and have been working non-stop ever since.  With a chart topping Christmas album, That’s Christmas to Me and a handful of EP’s, we’re finally getting a full-length album with original songs!  Check out their first original song off the new album and also a cover of Where Are U Now below?
