Alt Pop Band EXNATIONS Glow On Debut EP “Tiny Sound In The Dark”

IMG_1831

Alternative pop trio EXNATIONS bring light to a darkness on their debut EP “Tiny Sound In The Dark,” out NOW. The band, comprised of Sal Mastrocola, Taylor Hughes, and John O’Neill, combines two obviously opposite emotions in their music and meshes them together to create a relatable (and danceable) sound. Although self-defined as a ‘sad’ band, their color palette remains pastel, splashing hues of pale pink and aquamarine throughout their graphics, seemingly representing the dance-able side to their music (and exploring the clear contrast between both emotions). Dream-like, somewhat hazy, synthy; “Tiny Sound In The Dark” is a more-than-promising debut release, laced with sparkle and anticipation. The elements of pop music are clear, but what’s even more fascinating about EXNATIONS is the anthemic sense of empowerment the trio produces on their first effort. To promote the EP release, EXNATIONS has a string of four EP
release shows
this month to promote “Tiny Sound In the Dark,” sponsored by idobi radio’s Spinning Thoughts. About the release of “Tiny Sound In The Dark”, the band states:

“Tiny Sound in the Dark is the most immediate collection of songs I’ve ever had a hand in. The band gave ourselves permission to lean into the unabashed energy and aesthetic of our favorite pop music in a way that still feels true to where we came from. As a guy who has been in punk and emo bands for my whole life, the sounds, textures, and themes we explored on this record brought such a jolt of new energy and enthusiasm to my songwriting process. This EP is the first of many permutations of that enthusiasm and love. We hope you love it”

EXNATIONS are a sad yet danceable brand of guitar-flecked synth pop out of Brooklyn, NY and Baltimore, MD. The group consists of members Sal Mastrocola vocals/guitar/synth), Taylor Hughes (drums/synth) and John O’Neil (bass). Their debut EP, “Tiny Sound In The Dark” is available HERE.

HEADLINE LONDON SHOW TONIGHT (SEPT 4th)
SERVANT JAZZ QUARTERS

**SOLD OUT**

NOVEMBER HEADLINE SHOW ANNOUNCED
ST. PANCRAS OLD CHURCH, LONDON – NOV 12th

Archie Faulks has released the video for his debut single ‘It Rains’. The video for the solemn love song finds Archie in a deserted school as two dancers perform around him.

The song features haunting strings among stunning alt-folk and Archie’s irresistible croon. It’s been getting early support from Radio X, with John Kennedy a particularly big fan of Archie at the station.

Regarding the single Archie says, “I wrote ‘It Rains’ about a dying but once great relationship. All we do now is fight and get back together again; with the memories of the glory days being the only thing bringing us back to each other. The song is the realization of this but wanting to retreat to ‘our place’ and cling on for a few more days in the vague hope that we can regain an element of the past and not let us be washed away by the flood.”

Continuing about the video he says, “For the video we wanted something that reflected the song’s feel. Smooth, understated and introspective. Theo, the director, used a combination of 16mm film and digital shots to create a warm aesthetic throughout.”

‘It Rains’ is the debut single from Archie Faulks, who first rose to prominence under the moniker Tenterhook. As Tenterhook he enjoyed tearaway success over the course of two EPs, which spawned radio hits, saw him become a worldwide No.1 on Hype Machine, and clock up millions of plays on Spotify.

Archie Faulks’ return with ‘It Rains’ has been met by a rabid response from fans. It led him to sell out his first ever London headline show way in advance and he will play to a completely sold out Servant Jazz Quarters tonight (Sept 4th).

With the release of the ‘It Rains’ video and the sold out Servant Jazz Quarters, Archie has just announced his next London show. He will headline the stunning St Pancras Old Church on November 12th. Tickets are on-sale now via Music Glue.

PRESENTS
THE NEW TRAILER FOR NICOLE HOLOFCENER’S

IMG_1825Directed by | Nicole Holofcener
Written by | Nicole Holofcener
Produced by | Anthony Bregman, Stefanie Azpiazu, Nicole Holofcener
Starring | Ben Mendelsohn, Edie Falco, Thomas Mann, Elizabeth Marvel, Bill Camp, Charlie Tahan, and Connie Britton

SYNOPSIS: Writer/director Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said, Friends with Money) brings us a drama about parenting, loss and the consequences of our self-destructive behavior.  The story features a deeply flawed male protagonist whose tragic mistakes impact and inform the complex relationships in his life.  Far from a recognizable tale of a middle-aged rake in crisis, this is an emotionally resonant portrait of a fractured family explored by one of our most keenly observant directors.

Feeling trapped in the stifling, wealthy enclave of Westport, Connecticut, Anders Hill (Ben Mendelsohn) retires from his job in finance and leaves his wife (Edie Falco) in the hopes that it will renew his lust for life. However, he’s quickly faced with the startling reality of his choices; he spends his days looking for things to decorate his empty shelves, sleeping with strangers and feeling terribly lost.

Missing his ex-wife and on the outs with his troubled 27-year-old son (Thomas Mann), Anders befriends a drug-addicted teen (Charlie Tahan), sending him down a path of reckless and of deeply regrettable behavior. His shameful actions cause him to question who he is as a father and, ultimately, who he is as a person.

Adapting her screenplay  from Ted Thompson’s 2014 novel, The Land of Steady Habits also stars Connie Britton, Elizabeth Marvel and Bill Camp.

Colvin is an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, driven to the frontlines of conflicts across the globe to give voice to the voiceless, while constantly testing the limits between bravery and bravado. After being hit by a grenade in Sri Lanka, she wears a distinctive eye patch and is still as comfortable sipping martinis with London’s elite as she is confronting dictators. Colvin sacrifices loving relationships, and over time, her personal life starts to unravel as the trauma she’s witnessed takes its toll. Yet, her mission to show the true cost of war leads her — along with renowned war photographer Paul Conroy (Jamie Dornan) — to embark on the most dangerous assignment of their lives in the besieged Syrian city of Homs. Based on the extraordinary life of Marie Colvin, A PRIVATE WAR is brought to the screen by Academy Award nominee and critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman in his pulse-pounding narrative feature debut.

SHALLOW POOLS Rise Above Water In New Single “Sinking”

IMG_1757
Photo: shallow pools

In contrast to the track’s title, Boston-based alt pop/rock trio shallow pools stay high above water with their new single “Sinking,” out NOW. The follow up to their debut single “It’s A You Thing.”, which was released earlier this summer, “Sinking” focus on the daily struggles that come with general anxiety. Their sound continues to expand on influences of both pop rock and alternative, while maintaining meaningful (and painstakingly relatable) lyrics. shallow pools has kept busy as of lately – the trio has played a slew of shows with national touring acts, such as Smartpunk Records’ RIVALS, around the state of Massachusetts, premiering their upcoming Fall EP tracks to new audiences.

“Sinking” kicks off with a pulsing guitar riff, demonstrating the band’s clear
alternative inspirations, but quickly mellows out throughout the verses, eerily replicating the emotional rollercoaster experienced in anxiety. It’s clear that shallow pools knows what they’re advocating, but especially seeing as the band strives to promote inclusivity in their art, the trio are undeniably authentic in their lyricism and instrumentation. Recorded at Reclaim Studios, the trio hopes to continue promoting their brand of inclusion through their 5-track EP later this fall. About the release of “Sinking”, the band states:

““Sinking” is about the struggles of dealing with anxiety and the challenges it brings on
a daily basis. The song explores the fear of opening up to others and asking for help.”

shallow pools is a three-piece alternative/pop rock band from Massachusetts consisting of Jess Gromada (guitar), Glynnis Brennan (vocals, bass), and Ali Ajemian (drums). The trio became friends in 2012, and started out playing acoustic covers for fun around their hometown. In early 2016, the group decided it was time to give songwriting a shot. They released an EP under a different name and played at notable Boston venues including the Middle East Downstairs and Upstairs, O’Brien’s, and the Hard Rock. As the group continued to evolve and grow sonically and aesthetically, a change in name was inevitable and in April of 2018 shallow pools surfaced.

With a combination of rhythmic guitar, catchy melodies, and expressive lyrics, shallow pools offers a unique sound that bridges the gap between alternative and pop rock. They use music as a form of therapy, and lyrically draw inspiration from their own hardships ranging from loss, to strained relationships, to depression and anxiety. The group wants to establish a welcoming environment for people of all ages, sexualities, and gender identities. They understand the importance of LGBTQIA+ and female representation and hope that embracing their own identities will inspire others to do the same. After solidifying a new name and musical direction, the trio recorded with Chris Curran at Reclaim Music Studios in Thompson, CT. shallow pools released their debut single “It’s A You Thing.” in mid-July. Shortly after the release of  “It’s A You Thing.,” shallow pools will be opening for national touring acts such as VISTA and Walkney. “Sinking” is out NOW.

NEW ALBUM THE FUTURE OUT NOW

From Ashes to New have released their new music video for ‘Broken’, the follow-up single to their hit ‘Crazy’, which recently reached #2 on the U.S. Rock Radio chart. The track conveys a message of perseverance and believing in yourself when others try to push you down and hold you back in life. It’s a recurring theme in their music which is very personal to the band.

Their debut album Day One earned the band a Top 10 track at Rock Radio with the single ‘Through It All’.  Following  an extensive album cycle,  the band’s original drummer and co-vocalist both abruptly left the band. Rather than focusing on the setbacks, From Ashes to New forged ahead with a new energy and purpose.

The band, now comprised of frontman/rapper/programmer Matt Brandyberry, guitarist Lance Dowdle, vocalist Danny Case, and drummer Mat Madiro (Trivium) released their second album, The Future earlier this year, via Eleven Seven Music.

The band is touring the U.S. extensively for the rest of the year, with a headline run throughout September and October and are working on plans for a European tour in early 2019.

In addition to their U.S. headline tour, they will be opening for Five Finger Death Punch and Breaking Benjamin on their autumn arena tour and will also be performing at several festivals, as well as providing direct support for Stone Sour and Papa Roach on select dates. TOP 5 US SINGLE ‘KISS SOMEBODY’
WHICH CONTINUES CLIMBING COUNTRY CHARTS

Rising star Morgan Evans made a stop at Tootsie’s on Nashville’s historic Broadway last night to reveal the surprise release of his self-titled EP, out now. In the spirit of the EP’s brand new, live-in-the-moment track, ‘Young Again’, Evans treated fans to an impromptu round of shots to celebrate the moment.

Bringing it full circle, Tootsie’s was the Australia native’s first stop when he visited Nashville for the first time 10 years ago – dropping his bags and arriving on Broadway less than two hours after his plane landed.

“More and more when I experience big life and career moments, they remind me of all the little ones that happened before and made them possible”, Evans told The Tennessean. “I remember that moment as one of the defining ones, thinking, ‘This is the greatest city on Earth.’”

‘Young Again’ has quickly become a fan-favorite at Evans’ dynamic, one-of-a-kind live show where he commands the stage solo with his signature loop pedal. A fun party anthem that throws caution to the wind, the song couples carefree sing-along lyrics with a driving beat.

Produced by Chris DeStefano, the EP is a glimpse at Evans’ Warner Music Nashville / Warner Bros. Records full-length debut album, due out this autumn. The talented singer/songwriter co-penned each track on the EP and the forthcoming album.

Previous single ‘Day Drunk’ kicks off the EP,  followed by the stirring and anthemic ‘American’ alongside ‘I Do’, which Billboard acclaimed as a “breezy love song”. The top 5 US debut single ‘Kiss Somebody’ and the brand new track ‘Young Again’ round out the release.

Morgan will very shortly take to the stage for the 12th annual ACM Honors at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium and then return home to Australia for a string of SOLD-OUT headline shows. He’ll also hit the road again with Chris Young in September as a special guest on the Losing Sleep World Tour 2018.

From Athens to London, emerging rock outfit 7he 7ouch are set to release their debut EP Seventyseven on October 29th.

The new single ‘Solution’ is out now and is the first track taken from the upcoming EP. Racing with energy and unmissable hooks, the track holds a deeper message, inspired by the political turmoil affecting us across the globe and the extreme ideologies people have on how to deal with the issues.

Movie Review by Kristin: THE GUERNSEY LITERARY & POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY

IMG_1667Good morning, everyone!

I was browsing the available content on Netflix this weekend and stumbled upon this cute little movie, THE GUERNSEY LITERARY & POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY.

SYNOPSIS: In the aftermath of World War II, a writer forms an unexpected bond with the residents of Guernsey Island when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war.

I’ve been so impressed with the quality content Netflix has included in their library lately. I’m a sucker for movies and a sucker for books, so this one was a no-brainer for me. The cast was great and the storyline was interesting. The story is set in the 1940’s and follows the characters retelling their experiences of Nazi Occupied Guernsey to London author, Juliet Ashton. While she intends to write an article about the society and their experiences, she finds and values their friendship even more. She begins to reevaluate what she wants for her own life and helps the group find some sort of peace once they open up about the loss of a friend.

The scenery in the film was absolutely lovely and we get a glimpse of England (for those of us who have never had the pleasure of visiting). The performances were great in this. Surprisingly, Kate Winslet was slated to portray Juliet Ashton, but she dropped out of the project before filming began. Honestly, as much as I love Kate Winslet as an actress and human being, I can’t imagine anyone else playing this role other than Lily James. She really embraced the role and gave such an endearing performance.

THE GUERNSEY LITERARY & POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY does run a bit long — it sits at 124 minutes. It does include some drama, some comedy, a few flashbacks and the recipe for an old-fashioned romance, so it’s not difficult to hold your interest (in my opinion).

This is truly a beautiful story of love, friendship and the sadness of friends lost.

Due to overwhelming fan demand Bad Wolves – the US rock band who emerged as the #1 breakout act globally this year – have moved forward their touring plans and announced that their first ever UK & European shows will happen this October alongside Three Days Grace.

The tour includes dates all across Europe including Portsmouth, Nottingham, Birmingham, Bristol, London, Glasgow and Manchester in the UK. Tickets are on sale now and available at See Tickets.

Bad Wolves vocalist Tommy Vext states: “Last year when I stood in for 5fdp on a few of their shows I was reminded how passionate and loyal European fans are. When BW released ‘Zombie’ earlier this year we got the same, great response and couldn’t believe the massive wave of support from all over Europe, especially given that we’re a new band. Not a day has gone by that we don’t get tons of messages from fans demanding for us to come over. Originally, we were planning to do so in 2019 but it became clear that the time is now and we had to find a way. Coincidingly, Three Days Grace invited us to join them in Europe this Fall so we didn’t think twice and here we are. We couldn’t be more excited and can’t wait to see all of you out there at the shows.”

Adds Bad Wolves manager Zoltan Bathory, guitarist for Five Finger Death Punch: “I don’t think most people expected Bad Wolves to blow up around the world like they have this year, but to me it wasn’t really a shocker. They have that special sauce you can’t manufacture. You have to go and see them to understand the way they connect with people. We took them on the road in the US and they’ve been killin’ it night after night. They are the real deal, Canada and Europe are going to love them.”

Earlier this year the band released their version of The Cranberries ‘Zombie’, which soared to success all over the world, and has been certified Gold in the United States and Australia as well as Platinum in Canada. The track has topped charts worldwide, including the U.S. iTunes overall and rock charts, Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart, Spotify’s Global Viral 50, both the UK Rock Chart and Metal Chart, and the Shazam charts while also reigning atop the Canadian and American Rock radio charts for eight and three straight weeks, respectively.

The official music video, a tribute to the late singer Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries and an homage to the original, has garnered over 125 million views across platforms and in June this year, Bad Wolves presented a $250,000 check to Dolores O’Riordan’s four children, fulfilling the promise to donate all of their proceeds.

The follow up single ‘Hear Me Now’ feat. Diamante is also quickly climbing up the charts. Bad Wolves are currently touring North America with heavyweights Five Finger Death Punch and Breaking Benjamin on the biggest US rock tour of summer 2018 and, as a special treat for fans, Diamante is performing “Hear Me Now” live with Bad Wolves every show.

Bad Wolves’ debut album Disobey, released in the Spring via Eleven Seven Music, achieved the following chart positions in the USA: #22-Billboard Top 200, #2-Hard Rock Chart, #4- Rock chart, #8-on the Top Current Albums Chart. In the UK, the album reached #1 on the official Rock and Metal charts, as well as #1 on the iTunes Rock and Metal charts (also in Germany and France). In addition, the album reached #1 in a total of 15 countries across Europe, including Holland, Ireland, Finland, Belgium and many more. The band has amassed over 60 million track streams, 400,000+ downloads to date and, mainstream media such as BBC, The Times, The Sun and The Guardian in the UK, as well as great support from rock and metal media worldwide.

Rising pop star Emma Blackery has released her brand new single ‘Take Me Out’, taken from her forthcoming debut album Villains out August 31st through RWG Records.

‘Take Me Out’ has featured on six Spotify ‘New Music Friday’ playlists today including the UK. It’s a huge pop banger stacked with attitude and boasting a massive chorus.

Regarding the single Emma says, “I’m really excited for everyone to hear it. It’s a song I really connect with and one of my favourites from Villains. The song deals with feelings of paranoia when you are feeling exposed and isolated by your friends.”

Toby Scott (Little Mix, Girls Aloud, The Saturdays) has produced ‘Take Me Out’, and was also behind Emma’s recent singles ‘Icarus’, ‘Agenda’ and ‘Dirt’, which are all taken from her forthcoming album Villains.

Villains is a record inspired by a period of reflection and one that invites listeners on Emma’s journey from, as she explains, “feeling so paranoid that I risked becoming a person I didn’t like, to letting go of all of that hurt”.

The atmospheric album opener ‘Villains Pt. 1’ sees her declare, “I am a nightmare… designed to destroy” over a beat that drips with menace. Elsewhere, ‘Petty’ (“You used to call me pretty, then you took out the “r””) flirts with tropical house, and her restrained vocal on ballad ‘What I Felt With You’ simmers with longing. By the album’s explosive closer, ‘Villains Pt. 2’, Emma is forced to consider her own part in her downfall, asking, “Am I kidding myself, blaming somebody else, I’m my own biggest villain.” On creating the album Emma says, “Writing the album was so cathartic. Music is my therapy.”

In support of the album’s release the Essex-born singer has announced an HMV in-store tour where she will be signing copies of Villains and performing songs from the album live. HMV will be stocking exclusive yellow edition color vinyl of the new album and the tour will call at seven stores across the country.

Following this Emma will be head out on an extensive headline tour across the UK and Europe, which will finish with a headline show at London’s KOKO on October 25th. Full Emma Blackery tour dates can be found below:

HEADLINE LONDON SHOW
SERVANT JAZZ QUARTERS – SEPT 4th

London singer/songwriter Archie Faulks has released his debut single ‘It Rains’. The solemn love song features haunting strings among stunning alt-folk and Archie’s irresistible croon.

Regarding the single Archie says, “I wrote ‘It Rains’ about a dying but once great relationship. All we do now is fight and get back together again; with the memories of the glory days being the only thing bringing us back to each other. The love is still there but I realize its no longer helping either of us, but rather taking over our days and nights with worry, anger and fear. It’s a love for things we did together and the feeling we gave each other, but not for the other person themselves. The song is the realization of this but wanting to retreat to ‘our place’ and cling on for a few more days in the vague hope that we can regain an element of the past and not let us be washed away by the flood.”

‘It Rains’ is the debut single from Archie Faulks, who first rose to prominence under the moniker Tenterhook in 2014. As Tenterhook he enjoyed tearaway success over the course of two EPs, which spawned radio hits that led him to be featured as Zane Lowe’s Next Hype on Radio 1, while also receiving support from BBC 6Music and Radio X. He became a worldwide No.1 on Hype Machine, clocked up millions of plays on Spotify and completed a number of tours across the UK and Europe playing with the likes of Asgeir and Rhodes.

Explaining the transition from Tenterhook he says, “I first started releasing music when I was 18, with hindsight perhaps it was a little too soon and I wasn’t happy with the trajectory I was heading in both artistically and mentally.”

He continues on the time away spent focusing on himself musically and lyrically, “I’ve been writing all the new material on my own, trying to create an honest and heartfelt record to both laugh and cry to. I felt like going under my own name so that I no longer had a barrier to hide behind, it’s forced me to face my own truths and make some difficult life choices which has hopefully made me a better songwriter and person.”

Europe got a sneak peak of the new Archie Faulks sound earlier this year when he played a number of shows with Isaac Gracie that went down a storm. To celebrate the release of ‘It Rains’, he will play his first ever headline show as Archie Faulks at London’s Servant Jazz Quarters on September 4th. Tickets are on-sale now via Music Glue.

Movie Review by Kristin: IRREPLACEABLE YOU

IMG_1668Holy crap.

I admit that I can be a bit emotional at times during shows like This Is Us and movies like Love, Simon. None, however, have made me ugly cry quite like this one.

SYNOPSIS: Recently engaged couple Abbie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Sam (Michiel Huisman) find their dreams for the future shattered when she receives a terminal-cancer diagnosis. Abbie copes with the news by attending a support group, and by trying to plan the details of Sam’s life after she’s gone — which includes finding him a new partner.

IRREPLACEABLE YOU is a bit predictable in the sense that the main characters, Abbie and Sam, discover her diagnosis so early in the film, but the way it’s handled is heartbreaking and lovely all at the same time. I also feel like it was a bit sugar-coated because we never saw Abbie get extremely sick the way that we know cancer can play out — but I’m kind of thankful for that. We know what’s happening, we don’t necessarily have to witness every detail. In that respect, I also think it’s very telling that you’re able to be so emotionally invested in this couple despite not seeing the very worst of this horrible disease. It says a lot about the actors in each scene.

The performances by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Michiel Huisman were very sweet and raw. You really felt the love they had for each other, which made the outcome even more beautiful and heartbreaking. With that being said, even though the ending is predictable, watching it play out in such a way had me hooked. It was also fun to see Christopher Walken play a friend to Abbie throughout the film and, ultimately, being the person who made her look at her life differently.

My only complaint is that we didn’t get enough scenes with Kate McKinnon in them! Aside from that, this was a great little movie. One of the moments that really got me was when Abbie tells Sam that she thought planning his future would hurt less than her accepting that she won’t be around to see it. UGHHHHHHH. If you like the odd concoction of sad, romantic and funny movies, I definitely recommend this one.

Side note: I absolutely loved Sam’s dimples in the movie, and I was absolutely SHOOK to discover that he played Daario Naharis on Game of Thrones! Yes, the one that hooked up with Khaleesi and got dumped! Funny what a pair of glasses and a shave could do!
