TO GIVEAWAY ALL 36 CORVETTES

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES APRIL 30, 2020 AT 12PM PT – ENTER HERE

Proceeds From Sweepstakes Will Go To The National Guard Educational Foundation

Picture yourself cruising down the highway in a 1953 Corvette, one of the rarest years for the iconic sports car, so much so that out of the 300 produced there are estimated to be only 140 left in the world.  Or how about the 1956 ‘Vette, with its very unique Cascade Green color.  Or even the ’67 convertible, the most popular among Corvette aficionados?

Now your dream can become a reality, thanks to a group called Corvette Heroes.  Indeed, the group has launched a national sweepstakes in which 36 individuals can each win one of 36 classic Corvettes – one each from the years 1953, when the car was introduced, to 1989.  Entries, in the form of donations, are $3 each, with deals for multiple entries (5 for $10; 20 for $25, etc.) with proceeds going to the National Guard Educational Foundation.

Corvette Heroes comprises a group of New York real estate and parking garage professionals as well as the co-owner of Gotham Comedy Club who bought and are restoring what is considered the greatest Corvette car collection in history. To enter the sweepstakes – and to be eligible, you must be 18 years of age or older – visit the www.thelostcorvettesgiveaway.com.

It is known as “The Lost Corvettes” and the Peter Max Collection because the renowned pop artist owned them and was going to use them as canvases for a series of paintings.  He never pursued this project and since 1989 the cars sat in various parking garages throughout the city, collecting dust, dirt and debris for the past 25 years.

A few years ago, a representative for Max reached back out to Scott Heller, who for two decades had been helping Max move the cars to various garages around the city. The agent asked Heller if he was interested in purchasing the collection.  Heller discussed this with his two sons Michael and Adam Heller, and his cousin Peter Heller, as well as real estate associates Gary, Adam and Fred Spindler.

Then they reached out to Gotham Comedy Club’s Chris Mazzilli, who is also the owner of Dream Car Restorations on Long Island and one of the world’s foremost Corvette enthusiasts and experts, to determine what it would take to bring the cars back to their former glory. Mazzilli compiled a detailed analysis for the group on what each car needed and the cost of repairs.  Then the decision was made to purchase the entire collection.

“As soon as I met them and they asked me to look at the cars, I knew they were talking about the Peter Max Collection,” Mazzilli recalled.  “And I knew that we had to do this.  This is the greatest Corvette ‘Barn Find’ in history!”

It’s taken a few years to get the cars up to speed, so to speak.  And it also took time for the Corvette Heroes to determine what they actually wanted to do with the cars once they were fixed up and in running condition.

Rather than sell them as one collection, the group decided to give away the cars in the form of a national sweepstakes, similar in fashion to a wildly popular sweepstakes conducted by the TV network VH1 back 30 years ago.

Back in 1989, the then nascent cable TV network VH1 was looking to make a public splash in order to greatly expand its viewership, and a producer at the network came up with the idea of assembling the collection of 36 Corvettes and then giving them all away to one lucky winner.  Some two million people entered the contest, and the winner was a carpenter from Long Island.  Max purchased the entire collection from that carpenter soon thereafter.

But the Corvette Heroes are putting their own spin on the sweepstakes this time around. First, rather than one winner there will be 36 winners, greatly increasing the odds of winning a car, and second, they have decided that proceeds from the sweepstakes will go to American military veterans through the National Guard Educational Foundation. In addition, the History and FYI networks are producing a special series called “The Lost Corvettes,” which documents the history of the cars and the restoration efforts by the Corvette Heroes.  The series premieres this weekend on Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10 on History and FYI. Plus, some of the restored corvettes from the Peter Max Collection will be showcased at the LA Auto Show happening Nov. 22 – Dec. 1 at the LA Convention Center.

MORE INFORMATION
X Ambassadors’ debut platinum selling album VHS saw the band transition from Ithaca alt-rockers and Brooklyn indie scene outsiders, to chart breaking stalwarts. The album was an intimate insight into Sam Harris and his brother Casey Harris’ youth studded with audio snippets from home movies, and early recording sessions and sound checks. With it, came the genre-defining hits ‘Unsteady’ and ‘Renegades’, a three-year global touring odyssey and a string of high-profile festival performances.

Harris’ songwriting became increasingly personal resulting in the shattering, shimmering 2018 singles ‘JOYFUL’ and ‘Don’t Stay’ followed by a North American headline tour and sold out UK shows. Always looking to give back to the community that raised them X Ambassadors returned to Ithaca for the second annual Cayuga Sound Festival this past September creating and curating two days of musical performances and raising money for local charities.

In 2019 X Ambassadors released ‘BOOM’, a quick-fire anthem for emphatic recovery and personal revolutions. The artwork is written in Braille and designed in a yellow-on-black colorway. For Casey Harris, the band’s keyboardist and Sam Harris’ brother, who was born blind, it is the first physical manifestation of his work that he has been able to experience visually. He has just 10% of his vision.

X Ambassadors have also collaborated with a number of top names in music and film including Eminem, Tom Morello, Imagine Dragons, Wiz Khalifa, Suicide Squad, Netflix Original Bright and more recently they co-wrote and produced three songs on Lizzo’s debut album including the title track ‘Cuz I Love You’ and lead singer/songwriter Sam Harris has written and produced eight songs on the For The Throne – Music Inspired By The HBO Series Game Of Thrones soundtrack.

Check Out NYC Rock Band SILVER RELICS – Debut Album Out Now!

untitled1New York City-based rock band SILVER RELICS is Alex Sepassi and Justin Alvis.

Beginning at age 10, Sepassi actively honed a raw talent as a vocalist, performer, and by his late teens, a prolific songwriter. Raised on the iconic British songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s, Sepassi later discovered the Technicolor experiments of the psychedelics and brooding ’80s indie rock. He deftly incorporates the best of these influences while adhering to a classical “songs first” philosophy, writing taut, arresting demos on acoustic guitar and piano before sending a song on its trajectory. “I don’t know if I know what makes these songs, I think it’s different and new every time,” Sepassi explains. “The lyrics just point directly towards where I am in my life at that exact moment.”

Drummer Justin Alvis began his career as a member of various Drum and Bugle Corps that toured extensively across North America and Europe. His experience as a rudimental snare drummer molded him into a rhythmic databank. It’s not surprise that his skill set is the foundation of SILVER RELICS. His power and precision are easily recognizable each time he’s behind a kit.

“Justin is incredibly talented, with a work ethic and consistency that makes him one of a kind.”

Sepassi was introduced to New York producer Howie Beno at his 2016 South by Southwest showcase in Austin, TX. The two connected instantly, discussing a mutual admiration in each others’ past work and forging plans to record in the immediate future, SILVER RELICS and Beno began recording Sepassi’s material shortly thereafter.

“Howie’s the director, mentor, facilitator, the boss and our dear friend. He’s just as much a member of this group as we are and we know just how fortunate we are to say it.”

After deciding to relocate to New York in the Spring of 2017, Sepassi and Alvis were determined to record a collection of songs prior to their departure.

“What makes these songs different for me is how we were able to capture a snapshot of all the things that surround a life changing move in a very short period of time . . . the excitement, the uncertainty, the risk, the anticipation, the massive fucking anxiety just to name a handful,” Sepassi says. “I think these are experiences that a lot of people go through often and you certainly don’t have to move across the country to identify with this concept. It’s very human.”

SILVER RELICS continue to resonate with their listeners and to extend their reach since they began performing on New York stages in late 2017. Their live performance and style has often been compared to their artistic influences: Depeche Mode, The Cure, Duran Duran, Joy Division, The Verve, Nirvana, The Stone Roses, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Beatles.

The band released their debut album, Generic, on May 17, 2019. You can take a listen by visiting Spotify HERE.

Pop Rock Band SWIM Drops New Single “The Chase”

IMG_8346

NY-based indie pop rock band SWIM have released their new single “The Chase,” out on all digital platforms NOW. The track, a fun and energetic piece written collectively by the band, blends together various elements of mainstream pop, rock, and indie. “The Chase” is quite nostalgic, speaking of personal doubt in a relationship, while also piecing together each band members’ instrumentation to create a sleek, cool fusion. About the single, the band states:

The Chase was written by all members of the band, slowly coming together as they wrote each section of the song. The song speaks to uncertainty and doubt that one may feel in a relationship, while struggling to make it through. What started as a simple chord progression would be recorded and polished over the course of the year to become the version that is released today.

SWIM is an indie pop-rock band established in Stony Brook, New York. Voted one of the Top 10 bands on Long Island during the summer of 2017 in Newsday’s Band Battle, SWIM has been active at venues across Long Island since 2015, following the release of their first, self-titled EP, even performing at notable local venues like 89 North (Patchogue), Revolution (Amityville), and the Rainbow Stage at Heckscher State Park. Friends since high school, SWIM has steadily grown their fan-base performing from local Long Island venues to national stages such as SXSW in Austin, TX. 2017 saw the release of Finally, Someone, SWIM’s sophomore effort. Debuting a fine-tuned, focused bid at powerful, alternative rock laced with heavy pop overtones, the record features six tracks which promise to deliver a non-stop groove and revolve around the themes of love lost, love found, and love longed-for. The album has been premiered on local radio stations like 90.1 WUSB, and several online stations. Their last single “Heartbeat Connection” has earned over 200,000 listens on Spotify. SWIM’s thought lyrics, pop melodies, and rhythmic guitar and bass accompaniments tip their hat to indie rock influences like The Strokes and The Kooks, while staying true to the group’s unique brand of pop, heavily influenced by the likes of The Lumineers, Bleachers, and Coldplay. “The Chase” is available on all digital music platforms NOW.

NY-Based Alt Rock Band BROOKLINE Premiere New Single “Sinking”

IMG_6970

NY-based alternative rock band Brookline have released their new single “Sinking,” out NOW. The second single off of their upcoming EP “Fade” (out 2/22), “Sinking” sings an emotional narrative, touching upon themes of heartbreak and addiction. Elements of hard rock and pop punk are meshed together in the track, creating a unique blend that hints at influences of 90’s alternative. With an upcoming music video planned for “Sinking,” Brookline is also gearing up for the release of “Fade,” which will take new listeners on an emotional ride. About the single, the band states:

“Sinking” is the 2nd single off of Brookline’s Fade EP and tells the story of a relationship torn apart by addiction. The chorus hook “like a ship at sea you’re sinking, and I can’t be your lighthouse beacon” embodies the theme of the song; that although this person clearly needs help, their partner can no longer handle being subjected to their self destructive behavior and has to leave for their own good.

A five piece alternative rock band from upstate New York, Brookline features Mikey Pace (guitar), Dave Bennet (guitar), Matt Spinner (bass), Chris Fox (drums), and Tommy Carter (vocals). Formed in 2018, the group has mixed influence from pop punk and emo to post-hardcore and 90’s alternative rock. In late 2018, they announced the upcoming release of their second EP “Fade,” recorded with Jake Mannix of Indigo Audio Co. “Fade” shows a large amount of growth in musicianship as well as lyrical content from the groups earlier work. Touching on personal experiences of heartbreak, and the struggles of drug/alcohol abuse, “Fade” uses a combination of explosive hard rock and melodic emo and alternative influence to express these themes to their listeners and is set to be released February 22, 2019.

The lead single off of “Fade,” titled “Sinking,” is available NOW on all digital platforms.

Electronic alt rock band VISTA are not anywhere near slowing down their momentum. Fresh off the completion of their third US tour, “The Bloodlust Tour,” multiple support dates with Set It Off, and a music video for their last single “Witch Hunt”, VISTA has officially released a new single, titled “Born For Blood,” out on all digital platforms NOW. Recorded and produced by Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount of ZK Productions (Mayday Parade, Set It Off), “Born For Blood,” a wildly upbeat, distortion-laced, electronic-infused alternative rock track explores themes of hunger, determination, and empowerment. The stand-alone single is a true testament to VISTA’s evolution this year, filled with their signature layered vocals, gritty production, and raw passion. “Born For Blood” will be the final release for their current EP cycle, and the band recently returned to the studio to begin working on their 3rd record. Prior to this release, they dropped their last single “Witch Hunt” in May, which quickly became the band’s most-streamed song on Spotify, racking up 72,000+ streams as of yet.

An electronically-tinged alternative rock band, NY-based outfit VISTA originally formed in late 2015. Comprised of lead vocalist Hope Vista and guitarist Greg Almeida, the band combines both modern alternative rock and electronic influences to create their unique anthemic sound. VISTA released their debut 4-track EP “VERSUS” shortly after their original inception, in which their debut single “On The Brink” debuted worldwide on idobi radio. Their name hasn’t been shy in the press, since; the band has garnered praise from outlets such as Alternative Press, Rock Sound, Substream, and AXS. Since the start of 2017, VISTA has supported Fueled By Ramen artist Against The Current at Irving Plaza, gained idobi rotation with their single “Henchmen,” an anti-oppression anthem, and completed two headlining tours. Their most recent 7-track EP, “Long Live,” released in July 2017, lyrically centralizes around the theme of finding an oasis in a dystopian society. “Long Live” immediately made its’ way onto three different iTunes Alternative charts and sparked the completion of two promotional tours, in August and November, respectively. Most recently in 2018, VISTA released their recent single “Witch Hunt” (produced by ZK Productions), completed their third US tour “The Bloodlust Tour,” played a date of the Vans Warped Tour in New York, played multiple September support dates with Set It Off (Fearless Records), “Witch Hunt” premiered worldwide on idobi radio, and quickly became their most-streamed song, garnering 70,000+ Spotify streams, and earned video rotation in Journeys’ stores nationwide. The final single of the Long Live EP cycle, “Born For Blood” is out on all digital platforms NOW.

JULES WALCOTT Premieres New Single “First At The Altar” With Music Video

IMG_2092

At just 19 years old, alternative dark pop vocalist Jules Walcott is out for vengeance on her second single, “First At The Altar,” out now with a corresponding music video. An alternative and metal vocal veteran, Walcott comes from a history of being a frontwoman. Now placing her primary focus on her solo endeavors, the Long Island native is rapidly evolving into her own artistry, a sleek combination of both her original rock origins and modern dark pop. “First At The Altar” is a glistening example of what Walcott embodies as a solo entity; anger, yet grace, power, and a refreshing amount of rawness for such a young writer. Her debut single “Please Leave A Message,” released earlier this summer, was built upon a viral Instagram video of Walcott singing an Evanescence song earlier this summer. The video was a clear representation of her raw talent, which she carried over into the studio to begin creating a hazy, meticulous, almost sinister production style with engineer/producer Okan Kazdal (NEVRLANDS). Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Walcott’s rising solo career is that she went against the current, moving from band to solo instead of the opposite way around. “First At The Altar” gives listeners an eerie taste of her upcoming EP, as well as a clear picture of her artistic style. About “First At The Altar,” she states:

“First At The Altar” was lyrically one of the most exciting, yet challenging songs I have ever written. Written in my perspective about the time I was cheated on in a relationship, the writing process of this song was clearly driven on the emotion surrounding this experience. As I started writing the song, my goal was for it to be a diss at the person who cheated on me. As I kept writing, I began to discover that I wasn’t writing a diss track, I was writing about the inner conflict I constantly struggle with, where I let some else’s actions take control of my life.”

Alternative dark pop Jules Walcott is already known for her raw, silky and sincere vocals. Originally the frontwoman of a Long Island-based hard rock band, Jules decided to combine her natural rock roots and passion for pop music to create a uniquely eerie solo endeavor in the first quarter of 2018. After going viral on Instagram shortly after with her stripped back 60 second cover of an Evanescence classic, Jules began experimenting with synth pop, alternative, and electro influences on her debut single “Please Leave A Message,” recorded and produced by Okan Kazdal (NEVRLANDS). The release proved to solidify Walcott as an uprising pop contender, garnering over 40,000 views on YouTube alone and sparking new inspiration to expand on her mysterious, siren-esque artistry. Just 19 years old, she released her second solo single, “First At The Altar” to digital platforms on 9/14/18, which fuses together her rock origins and her now-familiar  grim synth sounds. “First At The Altar” is available on YouTube and all digital streaming platforms NOW.

WATCH: Official Trailer for SECOND ACT – Starring Jennifer Lopez, Leah Remini, Vanessa Hudgens, Milo Ventimiglia

second[1]

Hey there, movie fanatics!

I have to admit that I hadn’t heard of this movie until Milo Ventimiglia was on Jimmy Fallon earlier this week and briefly spoke about it. Naturally, I had to immediately look th[8]up the trailer and everything else I could about SECOND ACT. I’m a sucker for movies based in New York and who isn’t a fan of J. Lo and the best man/father on television these days, Jack . . . I mean, Milo Ventimiglia? It also has a ton of other fantastic actors involved (Leah Remini, Treat Williams, Vanessa Hudgens, Dan Bucatinsky, Freddie Stroma, etc.), and the poster is absolutely gorgeous!

If I’m being honest, it reminds me just a little bit of one of my favorite television shows right now, Younger. Anyone else kind of get that vibe? I mean, the stories are slightly different, but the premise is that the main character gets a job that is based on a lie. Either way, I will definitely be checking this one out in the theater!

SYNOPSIS: Jennifer Lopez stars as Maya, a 40-year-old woman struggling with frustrations from unfulfilled dreams. Until, that is, she gets the chance to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as book smarts, and that it is never too late for a Second Act.

Movie Review by Kristin: SET IT UP

IMG_0881

Hey there, movie lovers!

I stayed up late last night to watch a romantic comedy that was recommended to me by Netflix and I have to say . . . I don’t regret it one bit. It’s honestly the rom-com we didn’t know we needed!

The film was directed by Claire Scanlon and stars Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu.

SYNOPSIS: Two young assistants in New York City realize they can make their lives easier by setting up their workaholics bosses to date. While trying to perpetuate this romantic ruse between their nightmare bosses, the assistants realize they might be right for each other.

I’ve gotten to a point where I kind of go into these movies with the expectation that I’m probably going to be let down by something in the end, so I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn’t a weak link in the film at all. Between the hilarious banter between Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell), the out-of-control behavior by Rick (Taye Diggs) and Kirsten (Lucy Liu) and the likable sidekick friends of Harper and Charlie . . . there was a perfect balance of funny and friendship and romance. Not to mention it made me want to pack my bags and move to NYC immediately.

I highly recommend checking this out when you have almost 2 hours of free time to spare. It’s an extremely likable film with a great cast that really blends the romance and comedy genre perfectly.

The film premiered on Netflix on June 15, 2018.

MAYOR’S OFFICE OF MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT WITH NEW YORK MAGAZINE & VULTURE ANNOUNCE RETURN OF “ONE BOOK, ONE NEW YORK”

The Largest Community Reading Program In The Country Returns For A Second Year

New Yorkers Will Vote For One Book Among Five Titles Set On The Streets Of New York And Reflecting The City’s Diverse Neighborhoods

5,000 Copies Of The Nominated Books Will Be Available In Libraries Throughout The Five Boroughs

IMG_3329

Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin today announced the return of One Book, One New York, an exciting citywide initiative that brings book-loving New Yorkers together to read the same book at the same time. Building on the enormous success of the program’s inaugural year in 2017, this year’s campaign, in partnership with New York Magazine and Vulture, features five acclaimed titles. Throughout the month of April, New Yorkers will cast their votes at NYC.gov/OneBook to determine the one book the whole city will read together.

The nominated books, all featuring New York City neighborhoods are:

  • If Beale Street Could Talkby James Baldwin
  • Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan
  • White Tears by Hari Kunzru
  • Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue
  • When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago

“We are thrilled to present the five books in contention for this year’s One Book, One New York program,” said Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin. “These beautifully told tales reflect the rich variety of experiences and voices that make New York’s literary culture second to none. We hope once again that One Book, One New York will inspire great conversations, foster compassion in difficult times, support our vital publishing industry, and spur New Yorkers to rediscover their local libraries and neighborhood bookstores.”

Seeking stories reflecting New York City’s rich history, diverse neighborhoods and resilient people, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment consulted with literary leaders throughout the city for suggestions on which books to include in this year’s One Book, One New York. New York Magazine and Vulture’s book editors helped whittle down the list to five books, each of which delves into the lives of complex characters, from groundbreaking women to struggling artists to new immigrants, grappling with adversity as they try to forge a life and identity in New York City neighborhoods. They explore themes of missing fathers, tragic love and racial injustice through the eyes of unforgettable narrators that will speak to book lovers and new audiences alike.

“For 50 years, storytelling with flair has been integral to our mission at New York Magazine, and we’re delighted to team up with the Mayor’s office to champion these five books rich with city life and distinctive New York voices,” said New York Media CEO Pam Wasserstein.

Each of the authors has a unique connection to New York.

“New York City has been my inspiration and my muse for decades, and never more so than while I worked on Manhattan Beach,” said author Jennifer Egan. “I’m lucky to live in this splendid, inexhaustible city, and honored to be a contender for its One Book, One New York program.”

“Books saved my life,” said Esmeralda Santiago, author of When I Was Puerto Rican. “Newly arrived from rural Puerto Rico, with no English and feeling lost in a big city, I discovered the Bushwick branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, a bright, warm, place where I could be lost without feeling endangered. I feel honored to be among the writers whose stories will help future generations reflect their experiences and struggles as they steer their own lives, mentored by such generous guides.”

“In the last decade, I’ve made a life in New York. I got married in the courthouse downtown, my children were born here,” said Hari Kunzru, author of White Tears. “To be part of One Book is extraordinary. It makes me feel welcomed. It makes me very proud.”

Behold the Dreamers is, among many things, a love song to my adopted hometown of New York City, so it is a tremendous privilege for me, that it is being considered for One Book, One New York,” said author Imbolo Mbue.

“From my earliest days as an undergraduate student, James Baldwin’s life and work have provided a guiding force that has given me the courage to pursue work that has meaning and social impact,” said Barry Jenkins, writer/director of the film adaption of If Beale Street Could Talk. “With If Beale Street Could Talk, my favorite author renders the city and neighborhood that raised him in unflinching detail and with endless empathy and grace.”

The publishers of the five nominated books have provided copies to each of New York City’s library branches (5,000 copies in all); the books will also be available for sale at bookstores throughout the city.

This year’s One Book, One New York includes a public awareness campaign that will blanket New York City with information on how to vote online at NYC.gov/OneBook. Ads on subway cars in all five boroughs, as well as a One Book, One New York video campaign to be broadcast throughout the month of April on Taxi TV and on NYC Media, the City’s flagship television channel, will encourage New Yorkers to vote for their favorite nominated book.

On Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m., the four living nominated authors, Imbolo Mbue, Hari Kunzru, Esmeralda Santiago, and Jennifer Egan, as well as director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), who is making a film of the late James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, will join a panel discussion as part of the Pen America World Voices Festival. Held at The New School’s auditorium in the Alvin Johnson/J.M. Hall, the event is free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis. Click here to register.

As part of the fourth annual Vulture Festival at Milk Studios on May 19-20, the winning One Book author will be featured in conversation with a New York Magazine / Vulture editor. This event will also be free and open to the public. To find out more about Vulture Festival and register for the One Book One New York winning author event, visit vulturefestival.com/onebookny after the winning book has been announced.

After the month-long voting period, the winning book will be announced in early May. Once the winning book is picked, New Yorkers can look for events at their local libraries and throughout the city that will keep the discussion going all summer long.

One Book, One New York is intended not only to encourage a sense of community among New Yorkers, but also to support the City’s book publishing and bookselling industries. New York City is the country’s book publishing capital, home to the “Big Five” publishing companies – Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Hachette, and Macmillan – along with many of the most prominent independent and academic publishing houses in the country. In recent years, both the publishing and bookselling industries have faced significant challenges. An unsettling number of independent book stores have closed, along with several Barnes and Noble branches. The Bronx currently has no bookstores at all. Both Queens and Staten Island are underserved.

“Every day, people find common ground and new perspectives in the books, programs, and services offered at The New York Public Library,” said NYPL President Tony Marx. “Now, when the world can feel more divided than ever, One Book, One New York is an exciting opportunity to bring New Yorkers together through the power of reading. We are thrilled to participate again this year.”

30 Questions with Kristin | Part 1 of 3

YoursTruly

Good morning, everyone! I saw this questionnaire on Twitter yesterday and thought it might be a great idea to create a blog post answering the questions. It’s 30 questions, but I’ll break it down into three separate posts. We live in a time where people “get to know you” based on quick little pic posts on Instagram or character-limited posts on Twitter. I wanted to give a bit of insight as to who I am away from the screens, so here goes nothing:

  • Explain your Twitter handle.

I wanted to have the same handles for all of my social media platforms and there was always one that was already taken. So, I tried this one out, it was available, and I liked it. Simple as that! (After I changed it, the show This Is Us aired and it’s one of my favorites. So @thisiskristin_ reminds me of the show now, too)

  • Who inspires you and why?

To be a walking cliché, I want to say my mother because she’s held my family together for the past 40+ years. When my dad passed away, she took a huge step and moved out of our old house, which I never thought she would do. She’s not the type who likes change, so I was really surprised when she packed up our home of 28 years without hesitation. She’s strong, she’s funny and she’s just the best.

On a professional level, I would have to say one of my friends, Keisha Hatchett. Keisha and I have always had similar interests (i.e. baseball, TV shows and writing), but there’s one huge difference between us. She was determined enough to sell her car and pack her things for an internship in New York. She’s fought her way through internships and freelance jobs to a position at TV Guide and I couldn’t be more proud. We don’t get to talk as much anymore, but she inspires me to fight for what I want and to be a better writer.

  • Do you care what others think about you?

As much as I try to convince myself that I don’t care what others think about me, I think everyone does on some level. In some areas of my life I really don’t care. But in other areas, I do find myself wondering what people think about me. I haven’t had much luck in the guy department (thanks, Miami), so sometimes I wonder if they thought I wasn’t good enough or whatever. It’s a horrible thing to do, but for the most part I’m the way that I am and, in the end, I think that’s a good thing. While I might care in some aspects, I’m proud of myself for not changing to conform to their idea of perfection.

Also, when you’re a writer who submits work to literary journals, it’s hard not to question your abilities when you receive rejections from people that have no idea who you are. Their opinions are based solely on your work, and it’s so incredible subjective. When I get rejections I start to question whether I should continue pursuing a career in writing, but then I remember that Stephen King, J.K. Rowling and a ton of other authors also received rejections. Look where they are now!

  • What are you most looking forward to?

At the moment, I’m looking forward to seeing Justin Timberlake live (again) here in South Florida this May! Long-term, I’m looking forward to establishing my career now that I finally have my Bachelor’s Degree in English/Creative Writing.

  • What is one life rule you follow?

I actually have two that I like to follow:

The most important is to stay true to yourself. I’m okay with having to ask for help rather than trying to pretend like I know everything. I’m not the smartest or the funniest, but I try to be the best version of those things every day. I’m awkward, I have anxiety, and I’m way too trusting of people, but I’ve learned to embrace those things about myself.

The second life rule that I follow is to never go after a guy that one of my friends is interested in or has been interested in. A “friend” of mine didn’t follow that rule, and it resulted in literal heart break for me. I would never inflict that kind of pain on anyone.

  • What’s your dream job?

When I think about my dream job I immediately picture Liza from the show YOUNGER on TV Land. She works for a publishing company and started her own imprint with her friend, Kelsey. I would love to write for a magazine or to work in publishing. Being able to read books and discover unknown authors would definitely be a dream. Either that or something (anything) in the music industry. Recently, I’ve been looking into being a music journalist–someone who goes to live shows and reviews them.

  • Which fictional character do you wish you could meet?

I have three, actually. Four (Theo James) from Divergent, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). All of them are bad ass characters who fight to protect those around them. Corny answer, I know, but it’s true. Plus, they’re all gorgeous.

  • As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I actually always wanted to be a writer or singer. Writing and music have always been two of my favorite things, so to be able to do either? That’s what I wanted, and that’s still what I want. It’s taken me a while to figure out where to start, but better late than never!

  • If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?

A lot of friends have told me I should dress up like Daria for Halloween lol. She’s extremely sarcastic (which I can be) and pessimistic (which I am not), but she kind of looks like me, so I’ll say her. It’s hard to think of a cartoon character that I would want to be anyway lol.

ATT128931

  • What skill would you like to master?

Oh wow. This is a loaded question because I think there is always a skill that needs to be mastered. Right now I would have to say grammar lol. I always thought I was great when it came to correct grammar in writing, but after taking a course at UCF, I realized just how wrong I was. I mean, I know the basics, but there are so many rules and exceptions when it comes to grammar. I would love to master that for sure.

Well, that’s it for Part One! I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about me. Feel free to comment with some of your answers to these questions! Post Two will be up tomorrow, so stay tuned for that!

Have a great day!

Disney’s Empowering #DreamBigPrincess Photography Campaign To Be Exhibited At United Nations Headquarters In New York

Six-week showcase hosted by UNICEF, Girl Up and Disney will feature inspiring images from female photographers created to encourage kids around the globe to dream big

#DreamBigPrincess photos shared on social media generated 1 million likes and shares in just 5 days, enabling a $1 million donation from Disney to United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up program

Disney announced that its series of empowering #DreamBigPrincess photographs will be going on display as an exhibit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City through the first week of January in collaboration with Girl Up and UNICEF, the UN Children’s Fund.

The images captured by nineteen female photographers from fifteen countries showcase the inspiring stories of real-world girls and women, as part of Disney’s Dream Big, Princess initiative launched in 2016, which taps into the power of Disney Princess stories to encourage kids to follow their dreams.

“This initiative is about celebrating the positive impact of strong female role models, whether that’s Moana, Tiana or one of the amazing real-world subjects of the #DreamBigPrincess images. We’re thrilled with the response to the campaign and excited to partner with Girl Up, at the United Nations Foundation to showcase these powerful images to such an international audience,” Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media, said.

The display will feature the compelling images from the campaign’s award-winning photographers and their subjects, who have turned their dreams into reality.

From the youngest ever speaker at the UN to a gold-medal-winning Chinese Paralympian, the founder of the first female cycling team in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, a teenage author of a STEM coding book for kids, and a young surf champion from Brazil, the images spotlight a diverse range of stories to connect with kids and families around the world. As well as inspiring kids with positive images and the stories behind them, the campaign aimed to make a tangible difference for girls who face challenges in achieving their dreams, through a collaboration with Girl Up, at the United Nations Foundation.

For each like or post of a #DreamBigPrincess photo during the campaign timeframe, Disney donated $1 to Girl Up to support girls’ leadership and empowerment.
Since their release in August, the images have been liked and shared millions of times online, enabling Disney to donate $1 million to Girl Up.

“#DreamBigPrincess really caught the collective imagination and we are so grateful to everyone who liked, shared or created their own inspiring image to support the campaign,” Girl Up Director Melissa Kilby said. “The $1 million will help give thousands of girls around the globe the tools they need to achieve their goals and advocate on behalf of others.”

The campaign brought the #DreamBigPrincess message to life in a multitude of ways, including highlighting women who’ve achieved success in the face of adversity, young Girl Up Teen Advisors who’ve already helped make a positive impact on the world, and girls at play who illustrate the importance of imagination in childhood.

Thousands of people also posted their own inspiring images using #DreamBigPrincess, a select number of which will be exhibited alongside the original photographs at the United Nations and supported by UNICEF, which works to protect children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.
A core component is to advance gender equality and the rights of girls.

“Imagine a world where every girl follows her dream, and is safe, healthy, and can go to school,” Paloma Escudero, Director of Communications for UNICEF, said. “It is our collective duty to help make this world a reality and empower girls to reach their full potential.”

In 2016, Disney launched “Dream Big, Princess”, a campaign that encourages kids everywhere to dream big by highlighting key story moments and the inspiring qualities that each Disney Princess showcases through her adventures, such as Merida’s bravery, Cinderella’s kindness or Tiana’s perseverance.

While each princess has her own unique and admirable qualities, what they all have in common is resilience and an ability to triumph over adversity to make their dreams come true.
The Dream Big, Princess content series, which runs across Disney TV and digital networks globally, brings together a host of empowered moments from beloved Disney movies with the stories of real-life young role models, who have dreamed big and achieved their goals to show kids what’s possible. The exhibit is proudly presented by UNICEF, United Nations Foundation Girl Up, and Disney, and co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Brazil, Germany, India and Kenya.

The exhibit will be open for public viewing in the UN visitors lobby via pre-scheduled guided tours Monday-Friday or on the weekends via a UN security pass.
