IN REAL LIFE Talks with @ThisFunktional at the Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor

IMG_9911

Jesus of ThisFunktional.com & According to Kristin got the chance to speak with newly formed boy band, In Real Life, at the Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor event in Long Beach, CA.

After winning spots in the final band on ABC’s Boy Band, a debut single that charted soon after its release, a debut video that has surpassed the milestone of 1 million views, a contract with Hollywood Records and a manager (Johnny Wright) who has worked with some of the top artists in the industry (*NSYNC, Justin Timberlake, Backstreet Boys), In Real Life is in a great place right now and this is only the beginning.

With some long distance help from yours truly, they spoke with Jesus about getting more involved in the writing process, how much creative control they’re being given, being role models and working with Johnny Wright.

Check out the interview below:

Meet the guys:

Chance Perez, 19, of Seal Beach, CA – He’s a loving father of a beautiful 2-year-old girl, Brooklyn, and was a fan favorite on ABC’s Boy Band from the beginning. Chance almost gave up on music in order to pursue a career as a firefighter, but luckily he gave the show a chance and made the final 5.

Drew Ramos, 19, of Bronx, NY – Drew won us over during his audition when he proudly stated that he was a momma’s boy. His love for music led him to singing on the subway in NY and now he’s 1/5 of the world’s newest boy band. He’s a self-proclaimed nerd who loves Star Wars and video games, and we’re all on board!

Michael Conor, 18, of Cleveland, OH – Michael gave fans something different throughout his time on the show. Not only is he a creative genius who can rap & freestyle his way out of anything, he’s also a violinist and a loving big brother. At times Michael had to work harder than most in order to embrace the singing part of the show, but he succeeded and made his way to the final band.

Sergio Calderon, Jr., 16, of Redwood City, CA – Sergio also brought something different to the show by adding Spanish verses to the songs. He gave up his dream of playing professional soccer in order to pursue a career in music. Now he’s part of In Real Life, singing and making everyone laugh one day at a time.

Brady Tutton, 15, Shorewood, WI – Brady was one of the youngest on the show, but proved his talent when he sang in Italian during his audition and consistently wowed the judges each week. As a classically trained singer, an actor, and an all-around lovable guy, Brady gets to showcase his talent with his unofficial big brothers.

Also, check out this adorable shout out Jesus managed to get for my niece and me since we weren’t able to be there:

@Thisfunktional Movie Review: SOMEWHERE BEAUTIFUL

SOMEWHERE BEAUTIFUL Shows Something Good among the Chaos of Life

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

“Somewhere Beautiful” takes audiences through the journeys of two people at different points of their romantic life.

The movie is shot beautifully as each frame can possibly be a framed photograph, the story is detailed and can be slow at points, but the ending is rewarding.

Elena, played by María Alche, finds herself with new feelings for as she accompanies her photographer husband, played by Anthony Bonaventura, and his guide, played by Pablo Cedrón, who turns out to be a worldly, knowledgeable guy who Elena is impressed by.

Alche is a great actress that subtly brings out soft emotions which keep the audience guessing her character’s intentions. She is great along side both Bonaventura and Cedrón.

Bonaventura is dry in his delivery of his lines. He brings a sternness and facial expressions which help the audience connect with his character.

Cedrón is charismatic and suave with a mature rough look. He contrasts the clean stoic Bonaventura.

Film director Albert, played by Albert Kodagolian, comes home to find his wife gone and his mother taking care of his child.

Kodagolian wrote, directed and starred in this movie. With so much going on he still delivers a a marvelous performance.

Albert goes through some turmoil as his marriage falls apart slowly.

The stories are weaved together which contrasts the stories and yet finds a similarity in each.

I give this drama 5 out of 5 Popcorns. The performances in this movie are spectacular and the flow is always moving forward. Writer-director Albert Kodagolian created a spectacular story and was able to find the right cast, fantastic locations and a good direction to take the movie in.

@Thisfunktional Review: THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS

THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS Re-Ignites the Franchise

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

Dominic Torretto faces a decision to make for his family in “The Fate of the Furious,” bringing a fantastic sequel that propels the franchise forward.

The story isn’t a brilliant life altering story, but it’s a magnificent change for a series that has taken some twists and turns which have been unexpected.

This installment starts with Dom, played by Vin Diesel, and Letty, played by Michelle Rodriguez, on their honeymoon in Cuba.

Both Diesel and Rodriguez have been playing these characters throughout the series and continue to play them well.

Cipher, played by Charlize Theron, brings a proposal to Dom which he accepts.

Theron is a fantastic villain which adds an element of viciousness which the prior villains of the Fast and Furious franchise had not before. She is an equal to any of the members of Dom’s team, but adds a seductively dominant quality that will entice audiences.

To avoid spoilers, Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson, and Deckard, played by Jason Statham, end up in the same prison.

Johnson has a likable comedic element which helps to bring more to his character than just another brute force cop.

Statham is able to explore his character further and bring out more than expected. The parkour moves he does keep his character being highly entertaining.

The rest of the team – Roman, played by Tyrese Gibson, Tej Parker, played by Ludacris, and Ramsey, played by Nathalie Emmanuel – are back as well with Mr. Nobody, played by Kurt Russell and new comer Owen, played by Luke Evans.

Gibson and Ludacris get the best lines and such funny moments that it’s hard not to think of them as a crucial part of what made this movie good.

What makes this movie worth watching is a spoiler, which I will avoid mentioning, but will elude to.

Vin Diesel takes Dom’s character to a whole new level.

Dom’s relationship with Letty gets put to the test, enemies become allies and the family dynamic of the group changes.

The cars are amazing as they always are in this series.

Dom and Letty get the bad ass muscle cars which can take a beating and keep going.

Roman gets the flashy cars which help him become a bullseye.

Tej and Ramsey get cars which are high-tech as they are brilliant with technology.

Hobbs gets the large-bulky powerful trucks which go with his personality.

The villain gets the vehicles which can be seen as impossible to take down with a regular car.

The ending, much like the rest of the ending of these series wraps up with an inspirational message.

I give this action film a 4 out of 5 Popcorns. Discussing this movie with my guest to the screening Jessica Cameron, It held its own with the story and the action was just enough to be entertaining but not over doing it. It’s an entertaining ride which is enjoyable and adds something new to the franchise, a female villain that is equal in every way to any of the male counterparts. Charlize Theron is one of the biggest reasons to watch this movie, having watched it in IMAX was another great part. It’s a movie that benefits from the IMAX experience.

“The Fate of the Furious” is out in theaters April 14.

Sci-Fi movie “Arrival” finds a way to connect audiences with a story that seems unique, told in a fantastic way and in a less than common way.

These elements brought together screenwriter Eric Heisserer, producer Dan Lavine, producer David Linde and producer Aaron Ryder who all were captivated by the story.

“From one producer meeting to the next, anytime they asked if there was a piece of source material that I wanted and I said this and I said it’s a short it’s the sci-fi movie I’ve been wanting to make all my life,” Heisserer said.

Although the story’s pace is slow, the content of the story is captivating and enticing enough to keep the audiences’ eyes glued to the screen and the time to fly by.

Few stories have such complexity in a universal manner where everyone who watches can take something away from it.

The story and the way it’s told gives the audience a distinct intelligent view into a thought provoking story.

“As a producer or executive or the many hats that I wore in my life, I’m very interested in distinction. I think today I’m very interested in what makes things distinct because audiences demand it,” Linde said. “With the exceptions of Marvel, Star Wars and these big things that are distinct within their own genres, so to speak, I think the audiences demand to know ‘what is it that’s going to be distinct for me.'”

Subtleties in the script keep everything focused on the story and it’s themes.

The producers, writer and director took great care in such a passionate project.

Every part of this project and everyone involved seemed to bring their own ideas which mesh together well in the focus of making this story great.

“I have to give a ton of credit to Eric Heisserer who devised the language being circular. In the story it’s not circular, but he came up with that theme,” Lavine said. “He actually, in all the scripts he had a rudimentary of what the logograms looked like. They were a little bit more techie, but it was the idea that Denis and our production designer Patrice Vermette worked off of. We loved that idea, there are moments where you see the girl with the stick in the water and it’s kind of circular, it’s trough out and it really connected.”

Already this film has been deemed one of the best films of the year so far, with a 100 percent fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com.

From the adamant insistence from the producers to do justice to such an original, emotional and powerful short story to everyone involved having a focused vision on how to make the movie stand out, even with a limited budget.

“Arrival is one of the most exciting films I’ve ever been involved with, to be honest with you. Here’s what’s exciting about it. It feels perfect for right now,” Ryder said. “It’s a movie about communications in an era when its complicated right now, in a complicated world about communication and miscommunication and misinterpretation, that’s perfect for right now.”

“Arrival” is out in theaters on Nov. 11.
