Spanish-Language Films as a Tool to Instill Use of the Language

Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized annually in America from mid-September through mid-October. It is a month where recognition is given to all Hispanics living in this country, especially those who have made a positive impact and contribution to society while embracing their culture. With the increase of the Hispanic population in America and the generational growth we have seen that it has become difficult to keep our children grounded and maintain our traditions, values and cultures. Yet it is imperative for Hispanic families to instill in their children these traditions at an early age. As a proud Latina it is my diverse culture of which I am most proud of. It is this pride that I too will share with my children someday.

image002

So how do we effortlessly pass on and instill our customs and traditions to our children? There’s various ways, but one of the first places to start is to inculcate the use of our language. Speaking to our children in Spanish at a young age will not only give them a competitive advantage in the long run, but it will organically immerse them into our culture. Nowadays, there are many tools that can help us really inculcate the use of Spanish in our homes – from bilingual books, to educational videos, mobile apps, and even Hollywood films. When it comes to movies, those that are dubbed in Spanish are a great resource. Learning to listen is essential to comprehending another language and by viewing a film in Spanish our children will absorb not only our culture but the language.

image004

With that in mind, on October 14 Pantelion Films is releasing the animated film, La Leyenda Del Chupacabras. This film not only promises to entertain families from all over the United States, but also to be a good tool for our children in experiencing one of our culture’s well-known folktales in Spanish. The storyline follows the character of Leo and his friends as they embark on a new adventure and encounter the well-known mythical creature of El Chupacabras. Abandoned to their fate, Leo and the rebels must fight the El Chupacabras and escape the convent they are in. As Leo struggles to survive he will discover the secret behind El Chupacabras and will have to make the most difficult decision of his life. The film will be available in select cities with subtitles.

You can view the trailer here:

This film by Anima Studios is one of many animated series that focus on popular Latino folktales including La Leyenda De Las Momias and La Leyenda de la Llorona. These films are definitely a perfect tool to practice the use of Spanish language and also provide a look into our culture, plus they’re super cute!

What are other ways you instill the use of Spanish and your Hispanic background to your kids?

This Is Us – S1|E1: “Pilot” Review

Hey everyone! Sorry I’m posting a bit late. It’s been a crazy week between work, school AND my DIRECTV being out for a few days! In any case, here’s what I thought of NBC’s new Comedy Drama!

I. Loved. It. With weeks and weeks of buildup, this show was getting a ton of buzz and, from what I saw, it was all positive. The promos not only give viewers a glimpse of Milo Ventimiglia’a backside, but also the premise of the show…four characters that share the same birthday.

We’re introduced to Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and his wife, Rebecca (Mandy Moore). They’re a young couple who are about to be parents to triplets.

We also meet Kate (Chrissy Metz) who is a 36 year old woman struggling with her weight.

Randall (Sterling K. Brown) appears to be a very successful business man with a wife and two beautiful daughters. Apparently he’s been searching for his birth father, who left him as a newborn on the steps of a fire station.

Kevin (Justin Hartley) is the star of a TV series called The Man-ny and seems to be struggling with the fact that he’s turning 36.

How fabulous was Gerald McRaney playing Jack and Rebecca’s replacement doctor??

https://youtu.be/rfUiKg28r_M

Now that the introductions are out of the way, let’s get to the episode! Jack, Kate, Randall and Kevin all share the same birthday and are all turning 36. The writing of this show is excellent and the cast is incredible. We now know the main characteristics of these characters and what will most likely drive their characters in the coming weeks. Randall will explore the relationship between himself and his father, Kate will try to lose weight and rediscover herself, Kevin will try to work through his existential crisis and Jack will learn how to father three children at once.

This show has promise and I definitely recommend it to TV watchers everywhere! I can’t wait to see where they take the character development in future episodes!

***If you haven’t seen the episode yet, please stop here because I want to talk about the plot twist at the end!***

Holy shish kabobs!! This is what we’ve been missing!! That plot twist at the end made my jaw drop…literally! They’re all related!!! I mean we were told that Kevin and Kate are twins, but Randall being their adopted brother & Jack being their father?!?! I’ve heard stories about people discovering the twist at different points, so I’m curious when you all did. I noticed it when the man offered Jack a cigarette in the hospital and lit one up in the hallway. Then the camera panned out to show people in 70s clothing. I mean how creative is that?? To show the past and the future on this parallel plane is an incredible concept and I can’t wait to see where they take it!

What did you all think of the episode? Are you hooked like I am? Let me know!

MTV & ENDEMOL SHINE ANNOUNCE THE PREMIERE OF THE SERIES “THE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE GAME SHOW”

14379850_294625807584048_2759608497283480479_o1

Premiere to Air on Thursday, October 13 Beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT

MTV announced a new comedy block as part of the Fall schedule, which includes the premiere of the brand new series “The Almost Impossible Game Show” which will debut Thursday, October 13 at 10:00 p.m.

“The Almost Impossible Game Show” is an absurd comedy game show that’s so hard to beat, contestants are given 40 lives…and probably still won’t win! Brought to you by the producers of “Wipe Out,” “The Almost Impossible Game Show” is based on the popular UK series of the same name. Each episode of this outlandish new series features six neon-clad contestants taking on simple, yet hilariously difficult games. To win, these brave contestants must complete four of the six games, without running out of lives. If they fail a game, they’ve got to do it again… and again… and AGAIN. Contestants don’t compete against each other, but against the game itself. With challenges such as riding a tiny bike across a balance beam over a mud pit, putting on a pair of trousers while sprinting on a giant treadmill, and inflating a balloon to the point of popping using only the power of your buttocks, contestants will never know what’s next. Comedy duo The Rubber Bandits provide anarchic commentary and their own twisted take as the contestants try to make the almost-impossible possible!

“The Almost Impossible Game Show” is produced by Endemol Shine North America in association with Left Hook Media. Matt Odgers and Scott Teti serve as executive producers for Left Hook Media. Georgie Hurford-Jones and Rob Smith are executive producers for Endemol Shine North America.

Teen Wolf | Season 6 Trailer from #SDCC [Podcast Review]

Hey everyone!

I got together with my niece, Briana, to talk about the Teen Wolf | Season 6 Trailer that was released this weekend at San Diego Comic Con. She’s a HUGE fan of the show, and actually got me to binge watch it recently, so it was only right to get her reaction to the trailer along with the news that this will be Teen Wolf’s final season.

Tune in sometime in November to catch the premiere of Season 6 on MTV!

Here is the trailer that was released this weekend at SDCC:

The Vampire Diaries to end after upcoming 8th Season!

Yes, it’s true. It was announced on Saturday, July 23 at San Diego Comic Con that The Vampire Diaries will end after the upcoming 8th season.

With a beautiful tribute video to the fans serving as the show’s goodbye, fans were left to reflect on the memories this show has given so many of us. Admittedly, I didn’t watch the show from the very first airing, but I binge watched it on Netflix and was immediately hooked! My mother, my niece, her mother and I would have TVD nights to watch the show together. I even went up to Orlando with my good friend Keisha to a TVD Convention where I met a lot of other fans that became friends! Four conventions later, I can honestly say that this cast is so incredibly humble and extremely appreciative of their fans even after all these years.

To be completely honest, this show opened the door for me to start recapping shows for Variety Radio Online and now my own site, According to Kristin. While I won’t sit here and say that I sobbed after hearing the news, I will say that this show has changed a lot of things for me and for that I’m forever grateful.

Keisha and I will be recapping the 8th season each week over on our AudioBoom channel (The Chatterbox with Keisha and Kristin), so definitely check that out and like our page!

Laurie Hernandez: Team U.S.A’s Overnight Sensation (U.S.A, Gymnastics) Laurie Hernandez, the first U.S.-born Hispanic and youngest member of the “Fierce Five” U.S. gymnastics team, was unknown by casual fans until her breakout performance six months ago in the national championships. This star’s electrifying performances on the floor and the highest beam score during the U.S. trials earned her a spot on the team that is favored to win. To make sure you catch each moment of this up-and-coming star’s performances, Xfinity will provide “Must See Moments” notifications in real-time for marquee Olympic events like gymnastics that you won’t want to miss.

Mariana Pajón: BMX Champ Prepares to Rule Again in Rio (Colombia, BMX) Mariana Pajón is arguably the best female BMX cyclist in the world and earned Colombia its second gold medal in history during the 2012 Olympic games in London. Pajón showed the world that women have what it takes to compete in an extreme sport that is dominated by men. She’s a superstar in her home country and part of a new generation of athletes that have put Colombia as a legitimate contender in a variety of sports. You can keep up with her and the rest of her Olympic team by adding Colombia on your ‘Favorites’ section.
