#TVTuesday: Week 1 | This Is Us, Shadowhunters, Fear the Walking Dead/The Walking Dead & DWTS

IMG_0538

Hey, everyone! Happy Tuesday!

Today is all about TV here on According to Kristin. What I’m watching, what I’ve been wanting to watch, what others are watching that I haven’t gotten into, etc.  As always, I’m open to any suggestions for shows you want me to check out. Even if you just want to rant or rave about a recent episode of a show…tweet me all about it @thisiskristin_!

I admit…I watch a lot of TV. I started doing podcast reviews with some of my friends, which has kept me in front of the TV instead of in the gym lol. BUT, I plan on watching the shows while I’m at least running on the treadmill every night. 😜

IMG_0606

One of my absolute favorites at the moment is This Is Us. Even just the trailer for the NBC show had me hooked! This is the first time in my life that I’ve witnessed a show that touches on every possible situation and curve ball that life can throw your way. And to do it with such an incredible cast is the icing on the cake. Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Susan Kelechi Watson and everyone else involved with this show deserve all the praise in the world. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but if you haven’t seen an episode of this show, you should definitely change that asap.

A show I recently binge-watched was Shadowhunters, which can be found on Freeform (formerly ABC Family). A friend from work recommended it to me, so I binged it on Hulu and loved it. The acting is suspect at times, but the premise for the show is interesting. I saw the Mortal Instruments film a few years ago and this is based on the same concept and the same novel by Cassandra Clare. The show stars Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Harry Shum, Jr., Alberto Rosende and Isaiah Mustafa (the Old Spice guy!!). The special effects are pretty decent and the soundtrack is amazing. I’ll be talking about the artist, Ruelle (who sings the title track for the show and also has a few other songs that are featured), A LOT, so check her out wherever you download or stream music.

Last night Danay Garcia posted a photo on her Instagram that sent Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead fans spiraling down the rabbit hole! We’ve been speculating whether or not they would merge the two shows at some point and we’ve been shot down at every conspiracy theory, BUT it is finally confirmed that this will happen!! Not sure when, why, or how, but it’s going to happen at some point and I’m excited for it!

Don’t forget to catch The Walking Dead is back on AMC October 22nd!

IMG_0609

One of my guilty pleasure shows is Dancing With the Stars. I know, I know…don’t judge me! I wasn’t really interested in this season except for seeing Jordan Fisher and Lindsey Stirling though. I spoke about Jordan Fisher yesterday for #MusicMonday, but watching him dance is a whole other ballgame. He performed a Contemporary dance last night with his partner Lindsay Arnold that was absolutely beautiful! He can literally do anything! You can watch their dance below:

https://youtu.be/HoCAvD5AWog

Lindsey Stirling is an incredible violinist, but she’s also proving herself on the dance floor. She’s used to jumping around on stage when she’s playing the violin, but she’s a self-proclaimed clumso too. It doesn’t show though! I probably would’ve been tripping over my own two feet if I attempted even five seconds of this dance lol!

Check out her Jive with Mark Ballas from last week’s episode below:

https://youtu.be/is7Hx7B5e2c

Let me know what you’re watching! Tell me about a recent episode that made you cry and reevaluate life. There are so many shows out right now, it’s hard to keep up!

See you all next week for #TVTuesday!

SHOOTER | Season 1 Review | #TVreview

IMG_9973

Hey there, TV lovers!

If you’re thinking about catching SHOOTER on USA Network, stop thinking!! Just do it!! I recently caught the entire first season on Netflix and I’m hooked. I was a fan of the film (ft. Mark Wahlberg) and, considering the fact that Wahlberg is an Executive Producer for the show, I figured it would be a good one. I wasn’t wrong.

Ryan Phillippe plays Bob Lee Swagger perfectly. He’s a triple threat: smart, talented and family driven. Swagger, a talented sniper, will stop at nothing to protect his family after he’s framed for murdering the Ukranian President.

Phillippe also has a great supporting cast in Shantel VanSanten, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Eddie McClintock, Omar Epps, Josh Stewart and Tom Sizemore.

There’s action everywhere you look, but the action is driven (on Swagger’s side) by emotion, so there’s a good balance for everyone. To be honest, I thought this was the only season so far, so now I’m going to wrap this up and catch the second season on the USA app!

In case you need more convincing, check out the trailer for Season 1:

2017 MTV Video Music Awards Review | #VMAs #MTV

MTV_VMA_Katy_Perry_2-1280x487[1]

I have to admit that, in recent years, I’ve skipped the VMAs because they just haven’t been what they used to be. This year, however, I stuck around and watched it with my niece, and while some moments were fantastic, others fell short. Here’s my take:

Katy Perry hosted the show this year and I felt like she fell a little flat. She has a great personality in that she can make fun of herself and she has a really quirky sense of humor that is rather infectious, but I feel like she might have done better with a co-host. The jokes fell flat sometimes and it felt a bit forced.

I was happy with the performances for the most part. MTV allowed some people (:::cough cough::: Fifth Harmony) to take forever giving their acceptance speeches, so they made up in time by cutting the length of some performances, which I thought was odd. In all honesty, I could’ve done without Lorde’s interpretive dancing to her new single (with no live singing whatsoever) in exchange for seeing some more awards being announced or full performances. Especially the Linkin Park tribute that Jared Leto so eloquently introduced. It’s been reported that Lorde was suffering from the flu, so if that was the reason for not actually singing, then I give her credit for still showing up. If I had the flu, my ass would’ve been in bed, under the covers with a box of tissues binge-watching something on Netflix, not jumping around on stage.

We also got an exclusive premiere of Taylor Swift’s new single, “Look What You Made Me Do.” Now, I’m all for the exclusive premieres because they’ve done that for years, but 1) Taylor Swift wasn’t even in attendance and 2) It felt like the video was like 10 minutes long. Again, I would’ve rather seen some more live performances or awards being announced.

Either way, there was a huge theme going on throughout the show where celebrities used their platform to address important issues going on in the world right now and I applaud them for speaking up without hesitation. Paris Jackson, daughter of the late Michael Jackson, used her time as a presenter to say,  “I hope we leave here tonight remembering that we must show these Nazi, white supremacist jerks in Charlottesville and all over the country that as a nation with liberty as our slogan we have zero tolerance for their violence, hatred, and their discrimination,” adding: “We must resist.”

P!nk accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and used her time to speak up about self-image and how her six-year-old daughter felt she was ugly because she felt she looked like a boy.  P!nk addressed her daughter and all others struggling with self-acceptance by saying, “We take the gravel in the shell and we make a pearl. And we help other people to change so that they can see more kinds of beauty. …And you, my darling girl, are beautiful. I love you.”

One of my favorite moments was when Logic, Khalid and Alessia Cara performed “1-800-273-8255” and sent an extremely powerful message about mental health to everyone listening. The artists performed the song, whose title is the phone number to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, surrounded by a large group of suicide attempt survivors. You can watch the performance below and listen to the speech at the end for yourself (and you definitely should) OR you can read the speech here:

“I just wanna take a moment right now to thank you all so much for giving me a platform to talk about something that mainstream media doesn’t wanna talk about: mental health, anxiety, suicide, depression and so much more that I talk about on this album, from racism, discrimination, sexism, domestic violence, sexual assault and so much more. I don’t give a damn if you’re black, white or any color in between. I don’t care if you’re Christian, you’re Muslim, you’re gay, you’re straight. I am here to fight for your equality because I believe that we are all born equal, but we are not treated equally, and that is why we must fight. We must fight for the equality of every man, woman and child regardless of race, religion, color, creed and sexual orientation. So I say here and now, if you believe in this message and my message of peace, love and positivity and equality for all, then I demand that you rise to your feet and applaud, not only for yourselves, but for the foundation we are laying for our children.”

You can listen to what Brancey and I thought of the show by clicking play below:

Meet Your Newest Boy Band!! @InRealLife | #boybandabc #music #InRealLife

IMG_9911

You guys!!! For the past 10 weeks, we’ve had the chance to watch a group of young boys work their butts off as they competed for a spot in the newest boy band, which has now been revealed as IN REAL LIFE.

I started watching the show because I’m fascinated by the inner workings of these types of shows, and also because I grew up in the boy band era and simply can’t forget my roots! There was really no intention to continue watching past the first episode, but I got reeled in alongside my thirteen-year-old niece, Briana. I never would’ve imagined that I would become so invested in another boy band experiment, but this one was different to me.

All of the boys on the show ranged in age from 14-19 (after some 20-somethings had been eliminated) and had such a positivity about them that was infectious. These boys showed love to their families, they showed love and affection towards each other and aside from the MILD drama here and there behind the scenes, it was so refreshing to get caught up in something with some positivity. I can say that, personally, it’s brought a bonding between my niece, my mom & I that I appreciate so much. My niece was able to witness a group of people around her age that were working hard for something they really wanted to accomplish and never faltered in their love and respect for themselves or for others. A message I hope she retains for her own future.

IMG_9910I can’t say that the final band was my top 5 throughout the season though. Initially, our top 5 was JHype, Michael Conor, Chance, Drew and Mikey. When JHype (wrongfully) got eliminated, his spot on our list went to Marcus. However, that’s not to say that I’m upset about the final band either. I think any of the final 8 would have been a great addition. Jaden Gray has one of THE best voices I’ve ever heard and I truly hope he continues pursuing a career in music because it would be tragic if he didn’t. Marcus also has that star quality that I’m sure will drive his already budding solo career forward. We’re mostly sad for Mikey because I really think he fought for his spot in the band. After being in the bottom two (WRONGFULLY) twice, he still managed to win America over in the voting process and made it to the final 8. I was really hoping that they would add a 6th member to the band, but I’m just hoping he doesn’t give up on music because he’s such a personable and lovable kid with talent and the motivation to succeed. He definitely won us over, and we’ll continue to support anything he does after this.

With that being said…the final band is:

Chance Perez, Michael Conor, Drew Ramos, Brady Tutton and Sergio Calderon!!

You can watch their first performance of ‘Eyes Closed’ below. Keep in mind that they didn’t know who was in the band until right before this performance, so as each person was announced throughout the hour episode, they were given specific parts of the song that belonged to them on the final recording. Each person had to learn every part of the song in preparation for the final decision. I give them A TON of credit for knocking out this performance with so little mistakes! I can’t wait to see where this takes them, and here’s to hoping for a tour that reunites the boys with past contestants (:::cough cough::: JHype, Jaden, Mikey and Marcus)!! Here’s to also hoping that Timbaland and Justin Timberlake reach out to JHype too! lol.

Make sure to download the actual recording on whichever platform you use for downloading or streaming music too! Let’s get these boys some exposure!

Why JHype Should Still Be On ABC’s ‘Boy Band’ | #jhype #boyband @JHypeOfficial

IMG_9665

I grew up during the peak of the boy band era. You know the one I’m talking about . . . the one where it was either *Nsync OR Backstreet Boys. The one where we had posters plastered to our walls like wallpaper and attempted dance moves in our living rooms. The one where we watched ‘Making the Band’ when O-Town was put together.

You know what New Kids On the Block, *Nsync, Backstreet Boys, O-Town, New Edition, 98 Degrees, etc. didn’t have?? A 14-year-old beatboxer who SLAYS.

Personally, I was an *Nsync girl because . . . Justin Timberlake, but I decided to check out an episode of ABC’s Boy Band just to see how the judging was handled even though Nick Carter was one of the architects (you can take the girl out of the boy band era, but you can’t take the boy band era out of the girl). My niece, who is 13 decided to watch it with me and that was a wrap. We both got sucked back into boy band land. Let me also state, for the record, that even the One Direction boys didn’t have the greatest auditions on X-Factor (at all), but Simon Cowell saw something in them that he thought would work as a boy band. Clearly, he was onto something because they grew into their voices and have all managed to put out great solo singles and records.

I want to start out by saying that I’ve always been a fan of hearing people beatbox because it’s just not something that everyone can do. We saw JHype’s audition for Boy Band, where Timbaland even went up on stage to join him and it was incredible. I’m not just saying that because he’s my niece’s favorite either. Here’s the audition:

https://youtu.be/n9PlqkDNuts

Now, I can’t sit here and say that JHype ever had the best vocals on the show, but he had something that no one else had (aside from Michael Conor)–originality. My issue is that he knew he didn’t come into the competition as a singer and worked extra hard to improve, but even through all of his hard work and growth, Nick still knocked him down each week. No constructive criticism that he could take in and try to perfect, no recognition for the hard work he was putting in, nothing. The only person who gave him credit was Timbaland.

What should’ve been taken into consideration is that he was SO good at beatboxing and improving with vocals. Some of the guys only had vocals and even those weren’t consistently good over the past few weeks.

One comment that stands out in particular was when Nick said he was concerned that JHype didn’t have the tools they need to go deep into the competition. Are you kidding me?? Take a poll, sir! I don’t want another cookie-cutter boy band like all the ones we’ve had in the past. I think adding a rapper (Michael Conor) and JHype would be so interesting and different! I just didn’t appreciate that it sounded like Nick had it out for Jay from the very beginning. Stop telling him he has room for growth because they all do! I still do and I’m 33! Plus, let’s be real . . . Nick isn’t the best singer in BSB either, but they’re still relevant as a band! Now we can also add a lack of vision to that list.

With that being said, here is my ideal Top Five:

Chance, Drew, Marcus, Michael Conor and JHype

With JHype being gone now, here is my current Top Five:

Chance, Drew, Marcus, Michael Conor and Mikey

I know what you’re thinking . . . where’s Jaden?? I think Jaden is more of a soloist (and a bad-ass one at that), so I’d like to see him do his own thing. Hey, maybe he could collab with JHype & Miles!

It’s no secret that Jay will do big things now that his name is on the map and he has a strong fan base to keep that going. He would’ve been a GREAT addition, but I’m excited to see where he goes from here. Here’s to hoping that Timbaland and Justin Timberlake reach out and mentor him even further! The future is bright for him without a doubt. I can’t wait to see him prove Nick wrong!

On that note, here’s my favorite JHype performance on the show:
