Oscars Are Black And White, But Not Brown

Watching last week’s Golden Globe Awards, and noting the number of nominations for “Moonlight,” as well as seeing now awards-season-regulars like Denzel Washington, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer (“Fences” and “Hidden Figures”) breaking bread with the Goslings, Streeps and Afflecks, one may be led to believe that last year’s ugly #OscarsSoWhite controversy is well behind us.

And, yes, the awards season’s diversity has indeed come a long way… if you’re African-American.

That’s huge.

And overdue.

It’s a great change for the better, for all of us.

But, according to Merriam-Webster, the word diversity means “the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization.”

One must reasonably extrapolate that “different types of people” doesn’t mean just black or white.

So I can’t help but ask, where were the Hispanics, who after all make up 17% of the overall US population and a quarter of the US theatrical revenues?  Where were the Asians, who Hollywood is more-than-eager to woo, most notably for China’s expansive box office (over $6.8 billion in ticket sales in 2015) and investment dollars?

Surely, as Latinos, we ought to have been happy with Sofia Vergara’s notable appearance on the show, despite the over-the-top, slightly racist “anal” joke.

One would have hope that humor centered on Hispanics mispronouncing English went out with the Eisenhower era.

We should have been pleased that Diego Luna was able to say a few words in Spanish on national television.

Two foreign-born, Hispanic actors were called upon for comic relief and to give out awards — but not receive them.

Too bad, apparently, the John Leguizamos, Michael Peñas, America Ferreras, Eva Longorias and Danny Trejos of our industry would do better if they were to affect stereotypical accents.

Otherwise, Latino actors are relegated to the sidelines, if not invisible.

Where were the actual Latino nominees in the fancy dresses and tuxedos? Surely, we can’t be waiting for Alfonso Cuarón or Alejandro González Iñárritu to direct another movie before we dare to nominate a Hispanic filmmaker.

Surely, it can’t be that the last Hispanic actor to actually win a Best Actor Oscar was Benicio del Toro seventeen long years ago, in 2000?  And surely it can’t be that the last time a Latino actor/actress was even invited to the Oscars as an acting nominee was in 2011, when Damian Bichir received a Best Actor nomination for “A Better Life.”

According the MPAA, there is an average of 600 films created in the US every year.

You don’t need a calculator to clearly see the imbalance.

Then there are the Asians, or, perhaps better said, then there weren’t.

Outside of Dev Patel (Lion) and Riz Ahmed (The Night Of), there seemed to be zero other Asians invited to partake of the champagne at the Beverly Hilton this year.

But is this lack of true multiculturalism the fault of either the Hollywood Foreign Press or the Academy? No, it’s not.

Those institutions reflect what our industry does, and the truth is that opportunities for Hispanics, both in front and behind the camera, are few and far between.

This is an absurd and perilous disconnect, given the composition of the audience.

We, the Hispanics, are taken for granted.

We are woefully underrepresented in every movie, in every studio, and in every department, even in the marketing departments, regardless of our being the alpha consumers and the key drivers of many genres.

Some socially-aspiring studios have instituted “multicultural departments.”

But the bold fact is that they have very little, if any, power, and historically have proven to be inefficient at opening doors or access to jobs for other cultures, and appear to be gate keepers imposing further limitations upon my culture and my people in getting chances in our industry.

It is not good for our film industry’s business to keep ignoring the reality of the consumer.

No wonder audiences are migrating to other forms of entertainment, and no wonder we are in a sad, declining and, it pains me to say, decadent moment in our history.

It is short-sightedness on the part of our movers and shakers, who may oppose the building of one politically-charged wall, that they themselves have built an invisible wall around the industry that denies access to new blood and new sensitivities.

This is a terminal illness for our business and for the relevance of the Academy Awards.

Check the ratings: Latinos, the alpha consumers of films, don’t care much about watching the Academy Awards.

Our industry, like our country, was built by immigrants for immigrants.

Immigrants made the movies and immigrants filled the nickelodeons, a primary source of surging energy that made America, America and Hollywood, Hollywood.

Our industry was not born from a privileged and powerful establishment; it came from immigrants, starting with the Jewish immigrants who invented Hollywood, then bolstered by the Italians, the British, the Germans and so on… each of whom helped provide the mother of all sources of energy for our industry:  their cultures.

Culture is the source of storytelling, and storytelling is the essential element of our art and industry.

Culture matters.

It is in fact essential to our industry, and by not opening the doors to a true multicultural cinema we are killing that industry.

Just look at the constant drop in admissions.

And finding ways to increase revenues by raising the ticket price is bread for today, but hunger for tomorrow.

Denying the decline of our industry is just as myopic and foolhardy as denying climate change.

Open the doors to true multiculturalism, not just black and white, not only the establishment, but for all of us.

It will regenerate our decaying business and we will all reap the benefits.

If not, we have a rapidly diminishing window of time before going to movies becomes irrelevant to the real world.

I am optimistic that this change can be made to occur, because the one color that Hollywood unquestionably understands is green.

As an Academy member since 1993, I would like to be surprised this year with some true multicultural presenters at the Oscars show.

The Academy holds the key that can offer what the industry has not: the opportunity to be visible.

Plant the seeds, my beloved Academy.

Start by encouraging the show’s producers to be inclusive in their writing room.

Join with the producers in assuring that Latino actors are on the list of possible presenters.

By including the Eugenio Derbezes and the Kate del Castillos as presenters, you will see a new flowering business for all and some interesting ratings shifts.

Gentrification in the Los Angeles neighborhood known as Boyle Heights, “Gente-Fied” takes a comical look into the lives of seven characters in Boyle Heights.

The series of shorts will have it’s world premiere on Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Sundance Film Festival in the Egyptian Theater in Park City, Utah.

Director and Co-creator Marvin Lemus said, “I wanted to make something that felt Chicano or Mexican-American. I can’t speak to any other experiences.”

The writing duo spent time in Boyle Heights getting to know the area better and the people of the area better.

The area is changing and gentrification may seem like its making things better, but the response from the people who live there is mixed.

Some people are welcoming, mostly the millennials, some are struggling, these are older people, not just to keep up with the time, but to keep up with the cost of living going up.

“To me it’s important to speak to my truths, to my experience, and be as specific as possible,” Lemus said. “I chose Boyle Heights because I was familiar with the changes that was happening in the area where I was living, the Hollywood area. At the time I learned about ‘genie-fication’ which was happening in Boyle Heights.”

The chance to tell stories from the perspective from several different people that can be found in the Boyle Heights area.

It’s seven stories which help people not in Boyle Heights understand the difference in opinion people of the area are having and how diverse this community is.

“There’s so many latino projects which come out and they don’t work, they try to make latino communities one community and that still doesn’t work, that’s just not the case. Latino identities are many,” Lemus said.

Lemus is thrilled to be having Macro Ventures support the project and executive producers Charles D. King, Aaliyah Williams and America Ferrera supporting the project, but hopes that after Sundance there could be a possibility to expand on the project and develop it into a series or a film.

@Thisfunktional Review: ClarityHD On-Ear Wireless Headphones

Written by Jesus Figueroa

Monster Audio’s ClarityHD are a fantastic gift idea for any traveler or commuter.

Out of the box the headphones need to be charged before being turned on and connected to a device with bluetooth.

The stylish design is also comfortable and sleek.

The true amazement comes with the sound quality that is incredible from the first time used.

While reading the instructions that come with the headphones it says that they only get better with some time.

Listening to audio on low audio levels still provides a clear sound with natural and sound dynamic sound profiles.

The cushions provide a much more comfortable fit than other on-ear headphones. The cushions all around the headphones make it for a snug fit.

The headphones even when pushed to maximum audio levels do not distort the sound, rather the sound stays clear.

The battery life is another great feature as it can last for a long amount of time. While in use they lasted as much as 20 hours and with regular use, on standby and in use, the headphones lasted seven days without having to recharge.

The microphone could be much better. There were complaints that it sounded muffled sometimes and then other times that it sounded soft. It does however serve its purposes.

Overall, the Monster Audio ClarityHD on-ear wireless headphones are well worth the $179.995 price tag. The comfort, style and audio quality are the reasons to buy these headphones.

Available at Walmart, Walmart.com and Monsterproducts.com.

DISCLAIMER: The ClarityHD On-Ear Wireless headphones were given at a discounted price or free by monster Audio for review purposes. The review is still an honest review by the writer, no payment was given to influence the reviewer.

@Thisfunktional Movie Review: COLLATERAL BEAUTY

IMG_8048

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

Despite being a story around Will Smith’s character, Edward Norton steals “Collateral Beauty” with a charismatic and honest performance.

Howard, played by Smith, is mourning the loss of his daughter by writing letters to three abstractions, time, love and death.

Smith is a fantastic actor who portrays an emotional character with so much grief. He is dramatic and can pull the emotions out of anyone who has dealt with loss.

When his three business associates – Whit, played by Norton, Claire, played by Kate Winslet, and Simon, played by Michael Peña – decide to hire to actors – Brigitte, played by Helen Mirren, Amy, Played by Keira Knightley, and Raffi, played by Jacob Latimore – to play Death, Love and Time and to go to Howard and answer his letters.

Norton is just fantastic playing a humorous, yet emotional business man dealing with life after divorce and having a daughter that dislikes him because of it. He grabs hold of the audience’s attention and steals the spotlight from Smith.

Knightley is brilliant in her role and matches with Norton having several scenes throughout the movie which stand out. Her emotion feels true and can lead the audience to sympathize with her.

Winslet is great, for what is seen of her story. There’s not much the audience can grab on to about her character and leaves the story of her character lacking.

Peña is convincing as his character, but much like Winslet is not really seen as much and does not give enough of his back story to let audiences connect with his character.

Mirren is fantastic as an actress and as Death. She is one of the positive parts of the movie which audiences will enjoy.

Latimore embodies the youthfulness of his character well and gives some aggressiveness to his portrayal of time. He delivers his lines with such ease that audiences can lose themselves into his story and have it flow out like natural speech.

The entire story is difficult to sum up, but its a great story for the holiday season.

I give this drama a 3 out of 5 Popcorns. Although it has great parts to the story and the complexity is refreshing, it targets an audience which has dealt with major loss. The movie fells much like a stage production and yet much of the actual story feels left out. The overall story of Howard can get drowned out by the amazing acting from the supporting cast. The resolution seems to come out so quickly and runs long to where more is explained than what feels needed.

“Collateral Beauty” is now in theaters.

@Thisfunktional Movie Review: ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

Written by Jesus Figueroa (@Thisfunktional)

Filling in the gap between Star Wars Episode III and Episode IV, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is dark rebellion story with complex characters.

As the rebel alliance gets information of the empire making a secret weapon they go on the hunt for for the blueprints.

Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, finds Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, who is the daughter of Galen Erso, played by Mads Mikkelsen, who designed the Death Star and builds in a secret weak spot.

Luna is fantastic and is prominent in the story. He comes into the story as an anti-hero with a deep complex character that evolves throughout the story.

Jones is a compelling and matches well with Luna. The two together are a great addition to the Star Wars universe.

Mikkelsen is one of the best parts of this movie as he is a compelling character who is designing the Death Star under threat of being killed if he does not help.

The story falls on Cassian’s shoulders and keeps a serious tone with some comical moments which keeps some hope in a dark story.

There are few throwbacks to the original Star Wars series with appearances from several of the classic characters making an appearance.

There’s a huge reveal at the end, which gives fans something to look forward to.

I give this sci-fi movie 4 out of 5 Popcorns. Diego Luna carries this story great and does so not masking his accent and as a prominent figure. The supporting cast is able to give great performances, but Luna still stands out from the supporting cast. Felicity Jones is a strong character as well. The movie has no distinguishing qualities from any other Star Wars movies.  The cameos from classic characters give fans some excitement, even when everyone knows where this story ends.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is open in theaters now with some special presentation in 4XD.

Golden Globe Nominated NERUDA Opens in Theaters Dec. 16

Golden Globe Nominated NERUDA Opens in Theaters Dec. 16

It’s 1948 and the Cold War has reached Chile.

In congress, Senator (and renowned poet) Pablo Neruda (Gnecco) accuses the government of betraying the Communist Party and is swiftly impeached by the president.

Police Prefect Oscar Peluchonneau (Bernal) is assigned to arrest the poet.

Neruda tries to flee the country with his wife, the painter Delia del Carril, but they are forced into hiding, where Neruda writes his epic collection of poems, “Canto General.”

In Europe, the legend of the poet hounded by the policeman grows, and artists led by Pablo Picasso clamor for Neruda’s freedom.

Neruda sees this struggle with his nemesis Peluchonneau as an opportunity to reinvent himself and he sets about playing games with the inspector, leaving clues designed to make their conflict more dangerous and more intimate.

In this story of a persecuted poet and his implacable adversary, Neruda recognizes his own heroic possibilities: a chance to become both a symbol for liberty and a literary legend.

Illumination has captivated audiences all over the world with the beloved hits “Despicable Me,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” “Despicable Me 2” and “Minions,” now the second-highest-grossing animated movie in history.

Following the release of this summer’s comedy blockbuster “The Secret Life of Pets,” Illumination presents “Sing” this holiday season.

With its highly relatable characters, heart and humor, the first collaboration between writer/director Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri marks the sixth fully animated feature from the studio.

The event film stars Academy Award® winners Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, alongside Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton and Grammy Award-nominated Tori Kelly.

Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (McConaughey), a dapper koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times.

Buster is an eternal—some might even say delusional—optimist who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it.

Now faced with the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

Five lead contestants emerge: Mike (MacFarlane), a mouse who croons as smoothly as he cons; Meena (Kelly), a timid teenage elephant with an enormous case of stage fright; Rosita (Witherspoon), an overtaxed mother run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets; Johnny (Egerton), a young gangster gorilla looking to break free of his family’s felonies; and Ash (Johansson), a punk-rock porcupine struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo.

Each arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life.

And as Buster coaches each of his contestants closer and closer to the grand finale, he starts to learn that maybe the theater isn’t the only thing that is in need of saving.

Featuring more than 65 hit songs, Sing is produced by Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy.

Together, they have produced all of Illumination’s films since the studio’s inception.

Released by Universal Pictures, Sing arrives in theaters on Dec. 21.

The holiday season is in full swing at Universal Studios Hollywood’s GRINCHMAS celebration with the park decorated in festive holiday decorations.

From the red carpet at the front gate having a nice Grinch green boarder and fancy decorated Christmas trees around the carpet, to the lights and other decorations hanging, the atmosphere is of joy and celebration.

Whoville has come to the center of Universal studios with a giant tree with a stage where a show hosted by Cindy Lou Who.

Along with a show visitors get an opportunity to take a picture with Max the dog and his single antler, have a social media post opportunity with the Grinch’s sleigh and interact with other who-villians.

After story time with Cindy Lou Who, the Studio Tour tram leads from King kong 3-D, to the Fast and the Furious 3-D experience and over to a special Grinchmas performance at Whoville set.

The special performance contains an appearance by the mean green Grinch.

“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” with some who-villians.

When the grinch joins in, the festivities become more exciting.

Make sure to get a seat in the second or third section of the tram as the first section really can’t see much of the performance.

It’s a short performance, but kids are sure to get a good treat with it.

The holidays get everyone in the spirit and ever the Despicable Me; Minion Mayhem house has gotten some small changes.

On the outside theres a Christmas Reef and the minions are wearing Santa Claus hats.

Christmas Trees and holiday decorations are set at the entrance of the virtual ride.

The streets have some decorations, but the most noticeable change is just that most of the minions are wearing Santa Claus hats.

Its great to see the children get excited to see the minions’ new look.

It’s a small change, but the festive spirit is enough to be joyful for kids.

On the other side of the park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has warm Butterbeer for the cooling temperature in Los Angeles.

It’s a sweet, maybe a bit too sweet, drink which has no alcohol so even kids can enjoy a warm cup of Butterbeer. There’s also a slush and the regular Butterbeer available.

Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood isn’t the only holiday treat, Universal CityWalk is also decorated and has CityWalk Holidays celebration going on.

A 40-foot tall Christmas tree with 200,000 LED icicles choreographed to the lights and sounds of the season is at the 5 Towers plaza.

Santa Claus will make nightly appearances and have special photo opportunities at the 5 Towers.

The iconic, dancing water fountain at the heart of CityWalk also will make a splash this holiday season.

This modern and impressive fountain displaying more than 230 individual power jets projects streams of choreographed water into the air complemented by red and green LED lights and with holiday-themed music.

Free concert performances at “5 Towers” and an eclectic ensemble of talented street performers will make CityWalk the ultimate L.A. holiday destination. Admission to Universal CityWalk is free.

CityWalk has free concerts and special appearances by Santa Claus.

Grinchmas runs weekends on Dec. 3-4 and 10-11, and daily from December 16 through January 1, 2017.

THE BOATMAN a Border Story with a Paranormal Twist

THE BOATMAN a Border Story with a Paranormal Twist

At the center of the story is the mysterious Miguel aka “El Maldito” (The Cursed One). Miguel, brilliantly embodied by award-winning actor Oscar Torre, is a loner with a reputation of being one of the few Coyote’s (human smuggler) who rarely fails navigating his people across the unpredictable river that divides the U.S. and Mexico.

Miguel must grapple with a past he cannot remember and a future that is littered with corpses.

Known as “El Maldito”, Miguel seems haunted by the dead and dying.

He comes upon them on desert roads; he hears their confessions and takes part in their dying wishes.

Along with Torre (Ladron Que Roba A Ladron, The Hangover III, Counterpunch), “The Boatman” also stars, singer-songwriter in her debut film, Noemi Dunbar, Yvonne DeLaRosa (Borderline, Longmire, Los Americans), Carlos Montilla (Jane The Virgin) and Rogelio T. Ramos (We’re Alive: Lockdown).

“The Boatman” opens on Dec. 16 and runs through the Dec. 23 at Arena Cinelounge, a modern cinema in a historic theater building that is known to showcase indie and hard-to-find films.
