Living with Anxiety

Hey, everyone! It’s been a HOT minute since I’ve posted on here and I can’t even apologize. You know . . . life and all that. But let me catch you up.

Everyone knows that March 2020 was when the world turned to shit. My job, as shocking as it was, sent us all computers and told us to work from home for a bit. We all thought we’d be back in the office in 2 weeks or something, but here we are almost 2 years later and now our office is closed and we’re permanently working from home. My dining room is now half of a dining room and half of an office.

Working from home has been great! However, I didn’t realize that subconsciously it was doing a number on my mental health. If I felt a headache, I was internally contemplating whether or not I had a blood clot that was trying to kill me. After cleaning the kitchen cabinets (and there are a lot of them) one afternoon, I felt a pain in my back and was convinced I had a kidney infection. I had a pulsing sound in my right ear and ear pain one day (which lasted for months), so I went to the Minute Clinic at CVS and was told I had bubbles of liquid trapped in my ear drums due to allergies. What the heck am I allergic to??? Anyway, I was in and out of the doctor’s office, the clinic and the hospital more times than I would like to count. I decided enough was enough . . . maybe I need some anti-anxiety meds to help me out. My doctor prescribed Lexapro. I took it for 2 days, but I am not a meds person (despite my love/hate relationship with the doctor’s office). I decided I wanted to try walking outside and see if that helped before I relied on the meds. I never thought I would say this, but WALKING CHANGED EVERYTHING. I stopped taking the meds and haven’t looked back. I walk 2-3 miles every day now (if it’s not raining, because . . . Miami) and I feel great! This is not a knock on anyone who does take anti-anxiety meds by any means. This just happens to be what has worked for me right now. And maybe I’m wrong. Maybe what I’m about to explain is reason enough for me to actually be taking the meds, but what do I know?

If you know me at all, you know that I was born in New Jersey and have been talking about moving out of Florida for quite some time. Dating, friends, etc. just hasn’t been easy for me down here and I feel like I need to remove myself and start over.

Don’t get me wrong . . . I have friends . . . I just don’t hear from them for months on end. I reach out, we talk, we say we need to get together and then I don’t hear from them until the next time I reach out. Talk about doing a number on your anxiety. Some of my friends stopped inviting me places because they always assume I’ll say no (their words, not mine). Despite me saying that, yes, sometimes I’ll say no because my anxiety is high that day and certain situations make it worse, but that doesn’t mean I never want to do anything! It means that I would love the option to say I can make it or I can’t. And, if I can’t, I don’t need a lecture about how I “need to get over the anxiety.” If it were that easy, no one would have anxiety. I promise you.

There are few things in life that feel worse than having anxiety and feeling like you’re alone in your thoughts to deal with it. If only people took the time to actually listen to what you need or do some research to understand anxiety a little bit better. People are always so afraid of things they don’t understand or experience themselves.

The other thing is that I’m almost 38 years old, I’m single and I have no kids. I helped raise my niece, but she’s almost 18 and does her own thing. All of my peeps here in Miami are married and have kids. They can’t just come over for a movie and some wine. They can’t just drop what they’re doing and go out for a spontaneous dinner. It’s kinda sad that I feel like I have to move to another state where I know no one in order to feel less alone, but here I am. I love my friends, I just don’t always feel like that love is returned. Is it because of my anxiety? Or is it because of me? Either way, maybe moving to another state and not being able to hang out with friends cause there aren’t any there might feel better than being where all my friends are and not hearing from them lol.

Then there’s dating. What a shit show lol. As far back as I can remember, I’ve either been cheated on or made to feel like I wasn’t enough for an attempt at an actual relationship. Before you start thinking that I’m a hot mess, I always get told that I’m too nice or too good to be true, that they don’t want to lose me as a friend, etc. I have two older brothers, so I’ve kinda grown up seeing what not to do with guys. Sorry if I’m not a psycho who is high maintenance, guys! Some of my friends tried getting me on dating apps and they’ve gone as well as can be expected. I either get sent unsolicited dick pics or asked if I want to join the guy and his girlfriend. App gets deleted. I’ve been told I’m not big enough, or I’m too big for what they usually like. For someone with anxiety, each interaction that doesn’t go the way I hope it will go is another blow to my psyche. Is it me? Am I unattractive? Is being too nice a bad thing? No, mother f*ckers, it’s YOU!!

You might be saying to yourself, “Jeez. This girl is either depressed or really negative.” The truth is I’m neither! I’m an awesome person who loves to laugh and do fun shit. The problem is that I’m also an awesome person living with anxiety and sometimes that makes certain situations less appealing. I’m the person who always wants to have Friendsgiving or Friendsmas or Any-Day-of-the-Weekmas. I want that friend who will listen to me complain about some dumb shit because it’s what I would do for them. Yea, I don’t have a husband or kids to take care of, but I’m a human being and I need human connection just like anyone else. I want to be the person my friends call cause they need a shoulder to cry on. I want to know what it feels like to have someone truly love me back.

I’m a hopeless optimist who feels like maybe they took a wrong turn somewhere. I’ve been wandering around this place for so long now, I’m not sure I can find my way back. Especially alone. My life has become a series of unfortunate events and, because I’m an awesome person, I just keep bouncing back. I know there’s better out there and I won’t give up on finding it. If you’re like me, please know that you’re not alone. Your people are out there. I truly believe that mine are too. Just remember that you’re awesome and anyone else who is awesome will realize that too.

Yours truly,

Kristin

What to Watch: Official Trailer for SPIRIT UNTAMED

An epic adventure about a headstrong girl longing for a place to belong who discovers a kindred spirit when her life intersects with a wild horse, Spirit Untamed is the next chapter in the beloved story from DreamWorks Animation.

Lucky Prescott (Isabela Merced, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) never really knew her late mother, Milagro Navarro (Eiza González, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), a fearless horse-riding stunt performer from Miradero, a small town on the edge of the wide-open frontier.

Like her mother, Lucky isn’t exactly a fan of rules and restrictions, which has caused her Aunt Cora (Academy Award® winner Julianne Moore) no small amount of worry. Lucky has grown up in an East Coast city under Cora’s watchful eye, but when Lucky presses her own luck with one too many risky escapades, Cora picks up stakes and moves them both back with Lucky’s father, Jim (Oscar® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal), in Miradero.

Lucky is decidedly unimpressed with the sleepy little town. She has a change of heart when she meets Spirit, a wild Mustang who shares her independent streak, and befriends two local horseback riders, Abigail Stone (Mckenna Grace, Captain Marvel) and Pru Granger (Marsai Martin, Little). Pru’s father, stable owner Al Granger (Emmy winner Andre Braugher, Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine), is the best friend of Lucky’s father.

When a heartless horse wrangler (Emmy nominee Walton Goggins, FX’s Justified) and his team plan to capture Spirit and his herd and auction them off to a life of captivity and hard labor, Lucky enlists her new friends and bravely embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to rescue the horse who has given her freedom and a sense of purpose, and has helped Lucky discover a connection to her mother’s legacy and to her Mexican heritage that she never expected.

Spirit Untamed is the next chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s beloved franchise that began with the 2002 Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron and includes an Emmy-winning TV series. The film is directed by Elaine Bogan (Netflix and DreamWorks Animation Television’s Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia) and is produced by Karen Foster (co-producer, How to Train Your Dragon). The film’s co-director is Ennio Torresan (head of story, The Boss Baby), and the film’s score is by composer Amie Doherty (Amazon’s Undone, DreamWorks Animation’s Marooned).

Top Reasons Why PET SEMATARY Is One Of The Scariest Stephen King Inspired Movies

petsematary_bd_oslv_3dskw_mechStephen King is very well known for being a master of writing classic novels full of terror and suspense. The story of Pet Sematary is no exception and the original book was published in 1983. Now, in the 2019 adaptation of the 1989’s frightening and campy movie, a few twists were made but the terror-filled experience is still very present.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Pet Sematary tells the story of the Creed family, who relocates from Boston to rural Maine, they soon discover an ancient burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home. When tragedy strikes, the grief-stricken father is driven by the cemetery’s sinister power, setting off a perilous chain of events that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences. Pet Sematary will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack this July 9, but first, here are a few things you did not know about this film that make it the scariest one yet.

The Film Is Based On A Real-Life Experience

Stephen King based this story on a real-life experience he had in the 70’s when he lived in Maine with his family. They lived on the edge of the Maine woods next to a road where heavy, loaded trucks used to drive through. The lives of many local pets were taken in various accidents, and local kids used to bury them in a pet cemetery deep in the woods. King’s inspiration for his book, came after he found his daughter’s cat tragically dead on the side of the road.

Stephen King References (Easter Eggs) Can Be Seen Throughout

It may result very interesting for Stephen King fans to watch this movie as it features and sneak peeks various connections to a few of King’s horror novels like Cujo or It. These novels were also set in the state of Maine, and during this film adaptation, we recommend you watch out for clues or easter eggs about nearby towns of Derry and Castle Rock.

Creepy Tagline

With no doubt, King’s Pet Sematary will be remembered as one of the most terrifying movies, and its most famous line will stick with the audiences for years to come. The “sometimes, dead is better” quote has terrified us since the book publication, through the first adaption and to this year’s film.

Experience this thrilling movie at the edge of your couch this upcoming July 9 available on 4K Ultra HD, DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital everywhere. You’ll have a chance to enjoy watching exclusive bonus features like an alternate ending, extra tales, deleted, and extended scenes!

Illumination’s tenth feature, “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 comedic blockbuster that had the biggest opening weekend ever for an original film, animated or otherwise.

Packed with Illumination’s signature irreverence and subversive humor, this new chapter explores the emotional lives of our pets, the deep bond between them and the families that love them, and answers the question that has long intrigued every pet owner: What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home?

Terrier Max (Patton Oswalt) is coping with some major life changes. His owner (Ellie Kemper) is now married and has a toddler, Liam. Max is so worried about protecting the boy that he develops a nervous tic.

On a family trip to a farm, Max and mutt Duke (Eric Stonestreet) encounter canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a terrifying turkey, all of which only elevates Max’s anxiety.

Luckily, Max gets some guidance from veteran farm dog Rooster (Harrison Ford, making his animated-film debut), who pushes Max to ditch his neuroses, find his inner alpha, and give Liam a little more freedom.

Meanwhile, while her owner is away, plucky Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) tries to rescue Max’s favorite toy from a cat-packed apartment with a little help from her feline friend, Chloe (Lake Bell), who has discovered the joys of catnip.

And crazy-but-cute bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart) gets delusions of grandeur that he’s an actual superhero after his owner Molly starts dressing him in superhero pajamas.

But when Daisy (Tiffany Haddish), a fearless Shih Tzu, shows up to ask for Snowball’s help on a dangerous mission, he’ll have to summon the courage to become the hero he’s only been pretending to be.

Can Max, Snowball, Gidget and the rest of the gang find the inner courage to face their biggest fears?

“The Secret Life of Pets 2” is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy, the visionary team behind Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch and the Despicable Me and Minions franchise, and is written by returning Pets screenwriter Brian Lynch. The film is directed by returning filmmaker Chris Renaud, who also directed Illumination’s Despicable Me series and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. thesecretlifeofpets.com

Nelufar Hedayat uses her journalistic integrity through her investigation for STORY OF GOD

Nelufar Hedayat uses her journalistic integrity through her investigation for STORY OF GOD

Written by Jesus Figueroa

Journalist Nelufar Hedayat found that being a seeker for “Story of God with Morgan Freeman” was something very different from what she is use to, but being a journalist helped her be unbiased while on her assignment.

Religion can be an extremely sensitive subject, but Hedayat said that with her history of journalism she is able to put her own faith and believes aside and cover her topic for “Story of God.”

Hedayat visits the ruins of the ancient city of Pergamon and learns about the throne built for Zeus that Christians later dubbed “Satan’s throne” to demonize the old gods.

The role of investigative journalist was not going to work in this assignment, Hedayat said. To get something worthwhile she needed to step back from finding truth and rather find meaning which says is something much different.

The viewers of the show should watched with an open mind. A viewer needs to be patient and take in as much as possible to learn about themselves and about others around them as well.

“Story of God” is meant to be a way to accept others as others accept different believes as well.

Hedayat said that she was born in one of the poorest countries in the east and was able to study in one of the most diverse cities in the world and these amazing assurances have helped her gain a perspective which helped her not have a bias while pursuing this story.

Everyone has a story to tell and Hedayat said she was happy and honored to be able to hear these stories from people who shared them so willingly.

Hedayat said, that on a personal level, being part of “Story of God’ helped her to see that religions do not separate people, but rather they are all so similar and should unite people. These stories she was able to listen to helped her realize just how passionate people are about their religions.

Award-Winning Video Agency Artex Productions Creates Film for Celebrity Cruises’ Billion Dollar Investment CELEBRITY EDGE, Its First Ship In More Than Six Years

IMG_7644

“The Making of Edge” Showcases Celebrity’s Relentless Pursuit of Perfection and Evolution of the Guest Experience in Partnership with World-Renowned Designers and Architects

IMG_7643

Celebrity Edge is Celebrity Cruises’ first new ship in over six years, and it has already made an impact in the cruising industry thanks to its commitment to design and technological innovation. Inspired by the success and recent popularity of high-end film work covering the processes of artists and craftsmen Celebrity hired a team of filmmakers, Artex Productions, to dig deeper into the story and to create a more beautiful experience for viewers, one that paralleled the experience of being on Celebrity Edge itself.

Through lush cinematography and placing the focus back on aesthetics and craft, “The Making of Edge” explores the ideas behind the inception, creation, and design of the ship, and what the designers and architects intended and their process and passion for what they do. The 30-minute film, first of its kind in the industry, crosses continents and spans over two years of filming, following world-famous architects like Tom Wright (creator of the Burj al Arab, the famous sailboat-shaped building that graces the skyline in Dubai) and designers like Kelly Hoppen as they share their inspirations and processes in an intimate and personal way.

“We wanted the film to represent the experience of going on Celebrity Edge, in that it was beautiful, thoughtful about every detail, and it was a true labor of love on the part of its creators,” said Tim Warren, Chief Creative Officer, Artex Productions. “I don’t think there’s ever been a piece quite like this commissioned by the cruise industry.”

“The response to the transformational Celebrity Edge has been just incredible. So many people want to know what it took to design, build and launch this transformational ship,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. “’The Making of Edge’ special will give viewers a behind-the-scenes view and many stories that have yet to be told by so many who were involved in its creation. We are so thrilled to share this exclusive insider’s perspective with the world.”

Celebrity Edgewas the first ship to be completely designed using 3D technology, another element that the film wanted to capture. The film experience makes extensive use of high-end 3D renderings to show viewers the spaces as the designers intended them, in order to make a powerful connection to how the final ship came out.

“The Making of Edge” aired on NBC affiliate WTVJ/NBC6 on March 16, 2019, at 7:00 PM in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

For more information on Artex Productions, please visit artexproductions.com, and connect via FacebookInstagramTwitter and Vimeo.

Bookings are now open at www.celebritycruises.com/edge, or through a travel advisor. Building on Celebrity Edge‘s incredible momentum, she’ll be joined by Celebrity Apex in 2020, and two additional sister ships in 2021 and 2022.

Hello, my loves!

I wanted to start off by saying that, for me, Valentine’s Day has never been the day that it is for most people. In high school, I had a rose gram sent to me by the guy who eventually ended up breaking my heart for the first time lol. Also in high school, I received a phone call from a juvenile detention center from a guy who made a habit out of stealing cars with his friends, but, to this day, treated ME better than anyone else had. At the time, I thought to myself, “Omg, this guy likes me that much that he’ll call me from juvi to wish me a Happy Valentine’s Day!” You know, instead of, like, not stealing cars and being with me in person?? Haha.

When my niece was born and started school, she used to make me the cutest little Valentine’s likes this one & it made my day better than anyone else’s in the world, I guarantee it.

I always thought that if I did have a special man in my life, I’d be more appreciative of little gestures throughout the year as opposed to one day of the year where everyone thinks it’s necessary to do so. Maybe that’s my singleness showing haha. Either way, I don’t knock it for those who take it seriously, but it does kind of shine a light on those of us who haven’t had much luck in that department over the years. So, now that my niece is in high school and no longer makes me those adorable Valentines, I choose to do something special for myself. Even if it’s just buying myself some chocolate!

This Valentine’s Day, we were blessed with a new cover and music video from one of my favorite duos – SUPERFRUIT. Superfruit is composed of Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi from Pentatonix and they’re phenomenal. Their voices are SO good and their vibe is contagious. I posted yesterday about their announcement for the cover track that would be released today because they posted a picture teasing that they’d be joined by a special guest. Lo and behold, my guess on who that person was (Spoiler Alert: Adam Rippon) correct and I AM HERE FOR IT. If ever we needed a legendary trio, it’s now and it’s this one!

Side note: I had the pleasure of meeting Adam last year in South Florida for my 34th birthday and he was an absolute sweetheart!

I feel like a was tricked a bit because I thought Adam would be singing with them on the the cover of When In Rome’s “The Promise,” but he’s not. Adam skates beautifully on the ice while Scott & Mitch give off some serious 80’s vibes and incredible vocals!

So, for Valentine’s Day, I wanted to show some love and appreciation for anyone reading this and supporting my journey on the blog. Since I can’t send you all teddy bears and chocolate, my gift to you is my new favorite music video covering a song that was released in the decade I was born.

ENJOY your Valentine’s Day, whether it be with a loved one, with family or with YOURSELF! You’re not alone!

Excuse me while I go watch this video repeatedly for the rest of the day!

Weekend Vibes | My Music Recommendations for the Weekend: Peter Manos, PRETTYMUCH and Backstreet Boys

img_6326

Hello there, music lovers! 💚

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably sick of every third song on the radio being an Ariana Grande song. Nothing against her, I think she’s great, BUT I need some variety!

So here I am, offering my weekend music recommendations. Does my opinion count? Probably not, but here’s to hoping I can spread the music love and offer some variety to your music-loving ears.

img_6319

First up, I stumbled across a video on IG last night where three dancers were dancing to a song I’d never heard before. I couldn’t get the song out of my head, so I ended up adding it to my playlist on Apple Music.

The song is aptly titled “In My Head” by Peter Manos. While I don’t know much about him, I do know that he has three songs available to stream on Apple Music and you should definitely check them out. Those other songs are new releases (2019), titled “Out of Love” and “You Don’t Know Me.” He has this mellow, calming voice that makes you want to just light some candles and let all the stress of the day melt away. His songs are a mix of R&B with an acoustic vibe to it. Just trust me. Listen to them!

Another recommendation is from a band my niece introduced me to. PRETTYMUCH just wrapped up their FUNKTION TOUR, which I had the pleasure of going to with the niece last October here in Ft. Lauderdale. They recently released a song titled “Jello,” but my weekend recommendation is for a track they released at midnight last night/this morning called “Blind.” I mean, let me be honest, you should be listening to ALL of their songs, but I digress. These guys are hard working, talented and extremely underestimated (for now). They remind me of the old school boy bands, which is why I would even call myself a fan in my thirties lol. Their songs are so catchy, they’re incredible dancers and they put on a great show. Plus, I’ve seen first hand how much they love and appreciate their fans. Check out the new track, then check out all their other tracks and then you can catch some of the videos I recorded for my niece at their show here in Ft. Lauderdale (link below the video). 2019 better be their year!

Are you watching the video again?? You should be lol!

Here’s a link to my YouTube Channel, where you can find the videos I took from their show in October 2019.

My last recommendation for the weekend hurts my heart a little. Anyone who knows me knows that Justin Timberlake is my No. 1 and has been since I was 14 (that’s 20 years, people). I was that person who had NSYNC posters and articles plastered on my walls — like it was literally my wallpaper. With that being said, I feel the need to inform you that I was not that person who cried whenever I saw them or stalked their bus lol. Back then, you had to make a choice . . . NSYNC or Backstreet Boys. You already know what my choice was, which is why this recommendation hurts so bad haha. Backstreet Boys released their latest album, DNA, at midnight and it is fan-fucking-tastic! Excuse my French. I’ve been listening to it all morning and I haven’t found a song I didn’t like. I even texted my BSB-loving bestie and told her I might have to go with her to see them live for once in my NSYNC-loving life! All you Howie and Kevin lovers out there, hold onto your hats because they seem to have way more parts on this album than they ever have before. Don’t fact check me on that because if you’ve read this paragraph, you know that BSB was not my choice! I have to give credit where credit is due, and BSB definitely deserve it on this one. Congrats, boys men Backstreet Boys! (See what I did there?)

Check out the album DNA on Apple Music and Spotify, and you can check dates for their upcoming DNA World Tour HERE.

If there’s something you want me to check out, let me know in the comments! I’m always eager to hear new music, so feel free to send me YOUR recommendations!

Wishing all of you a truly fantastic holiday to spend time with your family, friends, fur babies and yourself! Eat lots of cookies, drink tons of wine and smile until your face hurts.

I can’t even begin to describe my appreciation for all of the support I’ve received on According to Kristin this year and I can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store!

From my family to yours, have a wonderful Christmas!

Addictive New App: DOLLIFY

I’ve been following an artist, David Alvarez, on IG (dave.xp) for quite some time and I absolutely love his work. He basically uses Photoshop to draw doll versions of celebrities and some of his followers. Sometimes he holds contests on Fridays where he randomly chooses one of his followers to draw.

There were so many times where I hoped my name would be announced, but alas, it was not. Imagine my excitement when he announced that he was developing an app (iOS: Dollify) where we could make our own! You can choose skin tone, eye color, hair color, clothing, jewelry, freckles/no freckles, etc. I wish I could say the possibilities are endless, but the app was just released this week, so things might be added in the future.

With the app’s free version, you can create a maximum of TWO dolls, but you can continue to edit them infinite times. OR, you can contribute to David’s hard work and pay the $6.99 in order to gain access to more options and an endless number of dolls.

Here are some of the ones I made for myself (I told you it was a addictive):
