TV Series Review: FRONTIER | #frontier #netflix

frontier_tv_series[1]

SYNOPSIS: Follows Declan Harp, a part-Irish, part-Native American outlaw who is campaigning to breach the Hudson’s Bay Company’s monopoly on the fur trade in Canada.

Ok, so the big bro (Mike “the Movie Guy”) gave me some homework a few weeks ago to check out a show called Taboo, starring Tom Hardy. I did, and I loved it (in fact, I should probably do a review for that one too!). After watching the first season of FRONTIER, I get a ton of Taboo vibes.

We all know that Jason Momoa plays the aggressive macho dude role really well (if you haven’t seen him on Game of Thrones as Khal Drogo, do yourself a favor and fix that!), but it kinda sucks that he’s typecasted into these roles. He’ll also be stepping into the water shoes of Aquaman, set to be released in 2018. With that being said, he plays the lead role of Declan Harp really well on FRONTIER. He’s determined to make heads roll, but still conjures up some sympathy from the viewers, which is what I like in a show.

The supporting cast is also great and full of lovely accents! You get some Native American, some Scottish and some of my own peeps, the Irish! There is a ton of cursing, some suggestive language, drinking and debauchery for those of you (like me) who enjoy a good F-bomb lol.

In comparison to Taboo, the quality is a little lacking. The throat-slitting happens way too easily, the stabbings barely produce any blood and sometimes the scenes in the tavern actually sound like a soundstage, but the show is still a great watch. I went into it with Taboo as a comparison, so if you haven’t seen Taboo, you might actually really like this one. I’ve seen both and enjoyed them regardless of production quality. With the first season being only 6 episodes, I’d say check it out. See what you think!

The show originally aired on Discovery Canada, but you can catch the first season on Netflix now. According to IndieWire, the show has already been renewed for a second season, so keep your eyes open for that as well.

Check out the trailer below, and then watch the darn show! Let me know what you think!

Movie Review by Kristin: CHEF | #chefthefilm @chefthefilm

IMG_9049First off, Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there (and to all the single moms playing both roles)!

As some of you may know, my dad passed away 2 years ago, so we celebrate my brother on Father’s Day, who is a father to my wonderful, sometimes annoying, niece. As part of his gift, I finally sat down to watch a movie and CHEF was his choice.

I have to say I’m glad he chose this one. Sadly, I’d never heard of this film, but I thought it was fantastic! It really exemplifies how someone can take a situation that is no longer making them happy, and turn things around for the better.

The movie follows celebrity chef, Carl Casper, as he runs the kitchen at an LA restaurant owned by Riva (Dustin Hoffman). Riva wants Carl to stick to his usual menu, but when a popular food critic arrives at the restaurant Carl and his team want to switch things up to make their menu more creative. This idea doesn’t sit well with Riva, and their plan is shut down. The critic, Ramsey Michel (Oliver Platt) destroys Carl’s cooking and the horrible review goes viral.

Carl gets schooled by his 10-year-old son, Percy (Emjay Anthony), on how Twitter and social media works. With little to no knowledge of social media, Carl engages Ramsey in a Twitter feud that eventually results in Carl leaving Riva’s restaurant.

At the suggestion of his ex-wife, Inez (Sofia Vergara), Carl flies with her and Percy to Miami, where his love for cooking first began. He meets with Inez’s other ex-husband, Marvin (Robert Downey, Jr.), and buys a food truck in order to get back to making the type of food that makes him happy.

With the help of his old sous chef and friend, Martin (John Leguizamo), and Percy, Carl sets off on a cross-country trip in the food truck. Percy’s use of technology turns the new food truck into a sought-after establishment.

In my opinion, this movie has great storylines that intertwine to give viewers the motivation to find what truly makes them happy. Carl takes an incident that hurts his career and stifles his creativity, and turns it around into something that positively impacts all aspects of his life. It sends the message that things aren’t always easy, but with hard work, dedication, and a dash of positive, creative energy, true happiness is absolutely possibly.

The film also features a ton of Hispanic flavor that really showcases the atmosphere here in Miami. An underlying moral of the story is: If you haven’t tried a TRUE Media Noche, do yourself a favor and TRY ONE!! Side note: Yuca Fries and Tostones should also be on your list of foods to try! What can I say…my Cuban peeps know what they’re doing! lol.

So check out the film on Netflix and, as always, let me know what you thought! You can thank me later for this little hidden gem!

TV Review: 13 REASONS WHY | #Netflix #TV

IMG_7985

Hey everyone!

My latest binge consisted of the new Netflix Original Series, 13 Reasons Why. It’s based on the best-selling novel by Jay Asher and really depicts the land of high school perfectly. The subject matter is extremely heavy and several of the episodes contain a warning regarding graphic depictions of rape and suicide. This is such an incredibly powerful topic to discuss though and is worth the watch.

Sometimes sweeping heavy subjects under the rug is what causes younger generations to act out. It’s hard to deal with things you don’t understand.

The show follows the story leading up to Hannah Baker ending her own life. Before she committed suicide, she recorded a series of cassette tapes that reveal 13 people she believes contributed to her mental state before she died. Whether they were major roles or minor roles, these 13 people impacted Hannah’s life in a way that made her feel trapped in her own mind. As each person listens to the tapes and passes them on, we get to see how the news affects each of their own lives as well. Hannah’s death scene is shown in the final episode of the series and it’s definitely hard to watch. The show is perfectly cast, written, produced and directed and doesn’t just touch on suicide. They also show the effects of underage drinking, drinking and driving, etc.

I think the most important thing to take away from watching something like this is that we should be influencing younger generations to be more considerate. In a society controlled by technology and social media, it’s so much easier to fall into the category of the bully and the bullied. It all starts with the parents and what we teach our children. Impressionable children should be made aware of the dangers that go along with bullying someone. You don’t know what other people are going through in their private lives or how certain situations might affect them. It’s so important to be considerate and to avoid putting negative energy out into the world.

To anyone still in high school . . . think before you do or say things. It sounds cliché and makes me sound old, but it’s true. There’s a difference between being the class clown and being a jerk. Your goal might be to make your peers laugh, but think about how your words and actions might affect the person on the receiving end. And to those of you that feel different, odd, unappreciated, invisible . . . own that! It’s what makes you unique!

More importantly, if you or someone you know is having trouble feeling accepted or are being bullied in some way, please know that there are options for you. Parents might seem uncool and overprotective but they have your best interest at heart. Communication is crucial.

Here are a few websites that could offer helpful information and to help you realize that even though you might feel alone, you’re not. No one is ever truly alone.

Hey movie fans!! So, I decided to check out this film that was featured on Netflix and decided to write my first review of 2016 on it! Check it out:

Directed By: Ami Canaan Mann
Written By: Ami Canaan Mann
Starring: Ben Barnes, Katherine Heigl, Clea Duval, Emily Alyn Lind, Sheryl Lee
Rated: PG-13

SYNOPSIS:  A modern day train hopper fighting to become a successful musician, and a single mom battling to maintain custody of her daughter, defy their circumstances by coming together in a relationship that may change each others lives forever.

REVIEW:  As a HUGE music fan, I have to say I enjoyed watching this movie.  Ben Barnes definitely surprised me with his vocal abilities, as he provides the majority of the vocals on the soundtrack.  The acting by Barnes and Heigl were great as well.  People can say what they want about Heigl as a person on set, but no one can deny that the girl can act!  Either way, Barnes plays a tattooed drifter who will play whenever and to whoever will listen.  Heigl, a conservative ex-recording artist, meets him by chance and the two opposites help each other in ways they couldn’t imagine.  The movie was shot in just 20 days and has a raw, gritty feel to it.  Personally, I enjoyed it because it wasn’t a complete sappy love story, but others might see a lack of content.  If you love folk music and small production, indie films, you might want to check this one out.
