TV Review: Season 1 of NBC’S ‘THE VILLAGE’

img_9278

Ok, people. I just have to say that NBC is killing it right now with their line-up! THIS IS US is one of the best drama shows I’ve ever seen, and THE VILLAGE is right on its heels (only because there’s only one season so far)! On the surface, it’s east to compare the two against each other, but the storylines go deeper than just superficial (metaphorical) wounds. After watching the first season of THE VILLAGE, I can easily say that it stands on its own two feet. I’m just hoping that it gets renewed for another season!

THE VILLAGE focuses on several groups of people living in a condo building in Brooklyn. Each little group in the building has their own storyline, but, individually, they’re all intertwined with each other in some way or another.

You have Sarah, a nurse who lives with her teenage daughter, Katie. Katie discovers she’s pregnant and is contemplating the idea of adoption. Based on what Sarah has told her, she’s lived her life believing that her father, a firefighter during 9/11, was killed in action. She has no idea that their new neighbor, Nick, is actually her father. Throughout the season, Sarah and Nick try to navigate through their own past and how to tell Katie the truth. Nick is also a veteran who is trying to find his way through his post-war PTSD.

Ava is an Iranian refugee who faces deportation and separation from her young son. You get to see how bonded the residents of The Village truly are when they all rally around her during this time. Ava has fallen for another resident, Ben, who is a police officer in NYC. It is revealed that, while Ben is willing to marry Ava to keep her in the U.S., he is still married to the mother of his deceased son.

Ron is the super of The Village building and an owner of a bar called Smalls. He’s married to Patricia, a social worker who is dealing with a relapsed cancer diagnosis. They are the “parents” to everyone in the building and often put their own struggles aside to help everyone else.

Gabe is a law student trying to stay out of the shadow of his power-hungry father. His grandfather, Enzo, lives in a nursing home, but comes to live with Gabe in The Village. Enzo is still mourning his late wife until he meets a new woman he quickly falls in love with. Gabe and Enzo have the most adorable relationship with each other throughout the entire season.

the-village-nbc[1]

With all of their individual storylines, they all seem to come together to support each other through all of their struggles. Truth be told, I’m a sucker for those moments. When someone is struggling with something and they have a group of people that are willing to drop everything to be there for them. I literally just cried my way through the entire season 1 finale, and I highly recommend that you check this show out if you haven’t already. The writing is fantastic, the cast is extremely diverse (with not one weak link) and it’s just so easy to connect with. Shout out to Grace Van Dien, who plays Katie, for a stellar performance throughout the season. Everyone was great, but Van Dien literally killed it every single time!

One of my favorite lines from the finale was when Gabe encourages Enzo to propose to his new love, Gwendolina. Enzo struggles with the idea of proposing with the ring that belonged to his late wife, but Gabe insists and says, “I think she’d want this ring on any hand that’s holding yours.” Seriously?!?!?! How could you not watch a show that delivers lines like that one?? Do yourself a favor and check this out. You can also join me in crossing my fingers that this gets renewed!

The Unknown Hitman: The Story of El Cholo Adrián, will premiere on Cinelatino on 3/17

Season Two of “El Desconocido: La Historia del Cholo Adrián,” Premieres on Leading Spanish-Language Network Cinelatino

Second Season of Cinelatino’s Original Series Based on Top Hitman of World’s Most Notorious Drug Lord

image001After a highly successful first season, the much-anticipated second season of Cinelatino’s original series, “El Desconocido: La Historia del Cholo Adrián” (“The Unknown Hitman: The Story of El Cholo Adrián”), will premiere in the U.S. on Cinelatino, the nation’s leading Spanish-language movie network on Sunday, March 17, at 11pm ET/8pm PT. Following the season two premiere, new episodes will air every Sunday at 11pm ET/8pm PT.

Inspired by true events, the first season of “El Desconocido” told the fictional story of “El Cholo” Adrián, right-hand man to the infamous drug lord, “El Chato” Guzman, who led Mexico’s most powerful drug cartel until he was captured alongside El Cholo after one of the most extensive manhunts in Mexico’s history.

The context of season two continues to be the power struggle between the army, the state and the cartels, but the story explores the sacrifices endured by those who live in the narco world and the personal damage the drug trade inflicts on organizations, families, relationships, parenthood, and friendships.

“We sought to capture the personal cost of the drug war—the inability to have a safe family life, to have genuine relationships, or to work freely as an artist or journalist,” said Carolina Bilbao, co-executive producer of the “El Desconocido” franchise. “The frailty of these vital freedoms is one of the main themes of this season and we’re confident it will strike a chord with viewers.”

“We are thrilled to bring back a second season of this series that’s captivated viewers world-wide,” said James M. McNamara, co-executive producer of the “El Desconocido” franchise. “Cinelatino is an expert at storytelling for Latin audiences and we are proud to be able to offer exclusive access to unique and top-quality original content for our viewers.”

Comprised of eight episodes, Season Two assembles an incredible collection of talent, including Guillermo Iván (Trade, Vantage Point, Sin Memoria, La Casa de los Babies), Scarlet Gruber (“Tierra de Reyes,” Passions of the Heart), Maria del Carmen Felix (Enemigo Intimo, Lady Altagracia), José Ángel Bichir (“Tiempo Final,” “Los Simuladores”), among others.

Latin Grammy award-winning Carla Morrison, singer-actress Reyna Soledad and award-winning indie band The Chamanas are among the artists featured on the Season Two soundtrack.

Directed by celebrated filmmaker Gonzalo Gonzalez, the film was written by Erick Hernández.

Season One premiered on Cinelatino in 2017 and will re-air on the network ahead of the Season Two premiere. Viewers can access more information and schedules at Cinelatino.com.

Cinelatino is available across the United States on all major cable, satellite and telco providers.

TV Review: THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE | Season 1 Available on Netflix

Ho. Ly. Shitballs. Seriously.

I know, I’m late to the party on this one, but better late than never always applies, right?? I’m not a huge horror fan, so I tried to avoid this one like the plague. I’d watched the trailer and part of me wanted to watch the show, but the other part of me didn’t want to have nightmares for the next week, so I said NOPE!

BUT, here I am. After finally giving in and watching it over the last few days, I’m here to tell you that if you haven’t watched this yet . . . DO IT!! What a great show! Everything from the story to the cast (both in past and present) to the directing to the effects was phenomenal. I was terrified, but also could not stop watching even when that one part of me really wanted to.

SYNOPSIS: Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.

As the synopsis mentions, Netflix’s THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE follows the Crain family in two separate timelines. The first is the family of seven moving into Hill House as Hugh and Olivia Crain attempt to flip and sell it. The family begins to experience paranormal activity that seems to increase the longer they remain in the house. The second timeline shows the family, now adults, still attempting to deal with the aftermath of what transpired during their time at Hill House as children. Both timelines weave in and out together in a way that works perfectly with each episode’s progression.

The show is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. Word to the wise . . . do not watch the show and then read the book trying to get answers you may not have received on the show! I’m only on the third chapter of the book, but these are two completely different situations. The book focuses on random people being invited to stay at Hill House, whereas the Netflix Original show focuses on the aspect of family and how these terrifying, traumatic events can cause a ripple in the lives of those who experience them.

Fun Fact: While watching episode 8, “Witness Marks,” one of the scariest scenes for me, personally, literally took my breath away. Maybe 5 minutes after that scene, the lights in my house flickered. I didn’t mention it to anyone because I figured it was probably just in my head because this show is insane, but nooooooooooo. My mother and brother both said they noticed it also. Half of the lights in our apartment complex had gone out. Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t think you want to know what might’ve happened to me if the power had gone out in my apartment as I was watching this show.

With that being said, I’m really surprised at how much I enjoyed watching this show. It’s one of those ones where you really can’t even attempt to try to figure anything out. It has twists and turns and you don’t know what’s real and what isn’t. You become invested in these characters, both as children and as adults. Kudos to Mike Flanagan for delivering a fantastic horror show that is terrifying and lovely and freakishly interesting with the perfect cast to go along with it. Well done!

I do still have some questions:

Why does Hugh Crain say that Hill House is the most dangerous for Steven?

Why could the adult Crain children “speak” with Nell, but not with their mother?

Why does it seem as though Nell was sort of targeted as opposed to any of the other children? Her and Luke experienced the most traumatic of the experiences, but I got the sense that the house wanted Nell to come home more than any of the other children.

Also, I’m not sure if I missed something in my tensed-up, anxious state of watching, but, in the finale, why does Steven ask Hugh what he saw? He’d always been so fixated on what Hugh wasn’t telling the children about the night they left Hill House, but I feel like I missed what it was he was blocking out.

Lastly, I want to know how it was for these younger children to film a show like this and have to say some of the things they had to say and see some of the things they had to see. Here’s to hoping they’re all just really great, young actors that won’t be scarred for life!

If any of you have watched and have theories, please let me know what your thoughts were! It was also announced recently that there will be a second season titled The Haunting of Bly Manor to be released in 2020. Do you think they’ll bring back some of the same actors the way that American Horror Story does? I really enjoyed the casting for this show, so I’m kinda hoping they do!

Interview: New Boy Band 4TH AVE – Initiation EP Drops Today!

IMG_1642Hello there!

I had the chance to speak with up-and-coming boy band 4TH AVE about their new EP, Initiation, which is out today! We talk ABC’s Boy Band, how the band was formed, their musical influences, and more.

4TH AVE is made up of Camry Jackson, Jaden Gray, Marcus Pendleton and Mikey Jimenez

If you weren’t already aware, I featured 4TH AVE as one of my ‘Artist to Watch’ posts back when they were first introduced. Their sound is so organic and soulful and fun. Not to even mention the level of maturity and talent these young men possess. You can check out that original post HERE. Now, I’m not trying to say, “I told you so,” but . . . (I told you so).

  • Can you introduce yourselves to those who might not be familiar with you from Boy Band?

We are 4 individuals who came from the show Boy Band on ABC. The judges were Timbaland, Nick Carter, and Emma Bunton. On the show every week we competed against each other in different groups throughout the season. Unfortunately we didn’t make it to the final band, but we were blessed enough to make our own, titled 4th Ave!

  • How did the decision to form 4th Ave come about? Was this something that was discussed prior to the show ending? I also want to high five you all for your maturity throughout the process of Boy Band and the unveiling of the final five.

Thank you! After the finale, Timbaland came up to all of us on stage and said he felt that we should be a group. He knew that each of us had something special, and together we’d be unstoppable! We are so very humbled that he input his opinion into our hearts. It was the best choice we could’ve ever made!

  • What has the song writing/recording process been like so far?

Before the show, each of us had some type of familiarity of singing in the studio, song writing, and singing front of big crowds. So when that process began to come our way it was a breeze due to the fact that we had been doing it for some time.

  • Did you get a say on which songs were going to be chosen for your first EP, Initiation? How many songs have you recorded so far?

Yes, we had a major say as to which songs were able to be on the first EP! Of course with the help of our manager Jared Rosenberg, and Musical Director Adam Blackstone, we were able to make the eight choices as to which should be on it. In addition to that, we have recorded at least 19-21 songs!

  • What do you hope fans take away from the EP?

From this EP, we hope that fans take away the raw emotion and passion we put into it! We want them to experience the life of the songs, just as we did when we were singing/writing them! This EP is an emotional roller coaster!

  • Since the formation of 4th Ave, you’ve performed back up for Charlie Puth on national television and you took part in a performance at the March for Our Lives event in Washington, D.C. How excited are you to finally be going out on tour with your own music and your own fans that have been patiently waiting for this for the past year?

What an honor it was to be able to perform behind Charlie Puth on the Voice, and Vic Mensa on March For Our Lives! It’s quite unreal being that we’ve only been a band for 7-8 months, and we are so humbled. Now that we are going on our own tour, with our own music, the only thing that goes through our mind is wow this is really happening this early. We never would’ve thought the ball would get rolling this early!

  • You’ve had incredible fan interactions since your formation. How important is that to you?

Fan interaction is our main focus. In fact we don’t even call them fans, we call them our supporters! They are so important because they keep us going, and they support us no matter what. If there is a meet and greet, they are there, if an EP comes out, they buy it, and if there is a concert, they are there, etc. So we love them with all of our heart!

  • Who are your musical influences? Who would you like to work with in the future?
